gonna be real rn I don't think that sassy gay best friend Mei is the progressive take people think it is regarding MK and Red Son

like I could accept not seeing Mei and Red Son as together/a ship, I mean after S3 it's hard for me to at least not see Red Son as in love with her but I can put that aside

the issue for me with MK and Red Son with Mei pushed off to the side is just that yeah, she's pushed off to the side and whether or not her and Red Son have platonic or romantic vibes to you, I feel like most of the time for the gay ship to work you have to devalue Mei and Red Son's canon relationship so hard to make Red Son's strongest tie to the group MK instead of Mei

just like when people think MK should've gotten the Samadhi Fire or even that Red Son should have gotten it (despite us seeing exactly Why he doesn't have it, and despite Red Son telling Mei in the finale it's yours, he didn't even want it)

it just feels like people will do whatever they can to take Mei out of the spotlight when she happens to land in it such as her bond with Red Son where Red Son shares a connection to the Samadhi Fire with her, calls her by her actual name (we're still on Noodle Boy for MK), spends three times the screentime with her than he does with MK if you compare youtube compilations of scenes (and some of those scenes are overlap so MK is getting even less exclusive time), Red Son carried her dragon plush around with him for days what's up with that, he actually has a mutual growth relationship with her, and in Red Son's own words, Mei graduates to the Most annoying person he knows, presumably beating MK

it isn't to say that Red Son and MK aren't canonly friends/important to each other by now, but that the vibe I constantly get is that everything Mei has with Red Son and maybe even with being MK's closest friend usually gets sidelined or watered down for a ship and I'm like idk guys.

I think I could stand the gay ship more if it didn't feel like a way to ignore Mei

we got a female character they fought to give center stage to and get more sets made for in an industry where Korra didn't even get toys despite being a main character

but here we are, actually getting Mei merch and Mei content and Mei being a well developed character but fandom just seems to.
