Deep down, i believe the two brothers are both protagonists, and that's a given fact, but i have another more comprehensive reason Sam is the protagonist.

I dont wanna delve into it, but it's something along the lines that Dean has always existed as an ultimate extension of Sam. His standing within the narrative is that of a soldier, not a leader; he exists to protect (sam) and constantly needs an external drive (which sam fills) to do anything.

Dean is also heavily biased and prejudiced. He is not really a protagonist for a story who'd lead/take all under his wing bc he wouldn't. He is definitely a protagonist in Sam's life but not in the supernatural story.

He doesn't hold the axis of the general narrative as Sam does, and as he does hold Sam's.

Yea they both dont make the best selfless protags but Dean is by far the lesser chivalrous out of them, he is also unwilling to take that burden canonly, he HATES taking care of other people his role as a soldier/guardian has always kinda just extended to Sam and ended there that's why he says there's no me if there ain't no you to Sam. Dean IS the ultimate extension of Sam. Without Sam, he ends.

Are we for real debating who's the protagonist? Not me, though. I saw jared's name being the first one to roll in the credits each episode and was like 'yep he's the protagonist'

saw someone in the tags be all “claiming sam is the main character…. i know what you are” with the implication presumably being that only Wincest Freaks care abt sam lmfao. wrong, first of all!

second, wincest enjoyers who view sam as the core of the show are getting the most out of the experience BY FAR so jot that down before your hands cramp from clutching your pearls

writing dean winchester is like. he’s hideously selfish. he’s the most selfless person in the world. he’s pathetic. he’s strong. he’s completely clueless about his feelings. he feels everything too much. he hates himself. he’s the cockiest son of a bitch you’ll ever meet. he ignores his fear. his fear consumes him. he’s protective. he wants someone to protect him. he’s controlling and possessive. he’s soft-hearted and kind. he wants to bear the weight of the world because it’s the only thing that makes him feel useful. he doesn’t want to feel responsible for everyone and everything. he loves the hunting life. he just wants to be normal. he loves his brother. he hates his brother. he loves his father. he hates his father. he loves his mother. he hates his mother.

and writing sam winchester is like. he’s never fit in anywhere. he just wants to belong. he wants to get away from his family. he doesn’t want to let his family down. he’s full of anger. he’s the gentlest man in the world. he’s never had the ability to choose. he’ll do anything to preserve other people’s ability to choose. he’s a good hunter. he wants to be anything else but a hunter. he’s defiant. he’s complacent. he’s ashamed of the things he’s done. he’s proud of himself for who he is. he doesn’t ever want to kill. he’ll kill anything that threatens someone he loves. he feels suffocated by his brother’s love. his brother’s love is the only true thing he’s ever known. he hates his father. he loves his father.

everything about these characters is a contradiction. how can you not want to eat them alive, absorb them into your blood, and then spend the rest of your life trying to write them into a world where every single one of these things is true at the same time??? i’m absolutely. insane

Destial is so talked about i got into supernatural thinking they'd be too overwhelming of a canon to ignore and all that hearsay. But then I watched supernatural and found out they got NOTHING on what samdean have. The hundred crammed-in fic/romantic tropes. The yearning glances and looks of pure love. The constant sexual innuendos and parallels to lovers. Soulmates unhinged codependent freaks who'd damn the entire world and sell their own souls to save each other time and time again. The chemistry, the storylines of them being forced to separate by every higher power yet desperately coming to each other every time. Most romantic relationship i ever seen on Tv.

Destial is an ant before a mighty God (samdean) it's not even near them.

At some point in 2011-2013 spn was really popular in my country and there was just. No ship but the brothers. I saw second-hand bits from the show and it was them standing together or doing something and i was 100% convinced they were fucking. I carried this sentiment almost all the way into my life. I knew for a fact the two brothers from that supernatural series were tonguing each other and that was the most normal thing in the show. They were in a happy and public marriage and everyone just rolled with it. Like they'd help people hunt things and people in the show would just look at them and say 'well well, if it isn't the blowjob brothers' and they were like yeah that's us.

okay okay okay so we all know sam and dean are allergic to personal space and practically live in each others' skin, but this scene really makes it glaringly obvious.

like every time dean tries to get closer to sam, trying to close the gap to their non-existent usual, sam takes a step back. as if we need more evidence that they're Not Normal™ about each other
