BTS ao3 authors, what are your thoughts on this?
I see this most often in the Jikook/Taekook works, (but more often with Taekook authors)
First of all, this is not a taekook hate post. There are some amazing taekook authors. Y’all keep doing you, y’all know who you are. If anybody wants a rec of some of my fave fics let me know.
Back to the real issue. I understand that for the sake of plot, it might be necessary to place a character (usually Jungkook) in a toxic relationship (usually with Jimin) in order to provide contrast for his new, healthy relationship (usually with Taehyung). I get it, it’s fiction, none of this is real, and that’s the beauty of fanfiction! Everybody please keep writing and creating your own content, nothing I say should be interpreted as an attack against your work, because I understand and appreciate the power and freedom of expression that we writers and content creators have (even if I don’t necessarily subscribe to the idea of bashing one ship to promote another but that’s a whole different can of worms).
My problem is that when some taekook authors choose to write stories in this way, they insist on tagging jikook as a major relationship. I am already anticipating someone telling me to just filter out taekook if I don’t want to see it, but the problem is that the tags are often not being utilized in a standard way, and as a result there will always be some fics that are missed. I’ve noticed a few jikook authors also do this, and while I’m a multishipper and have no problem reading stories with either jikook or taekook (provided there is no bashing of one in favor of the other) I understand that due to strains in the fandom, some of us aren’t (in fact, I recently saw an author bullied off of writing their fic bc the readers didn’t agree with how the author was portraying Jimin in the story as someone who was breaking up a relationship between Jungkook and Taehyung, and while the portrayals were a bit annoying, one of the most important rules of content is if you don’t like it and you don’t have anything constructive to say, just leave. The author did not deserve the hateful comments they got, and while the manner in which they responded wasn’t mature either, that still doesn’t justify how many people essentially bullied the author off of their own story….not ok guys…not ok.)
For the sake of uniformity in tagging, wouldn’t we all benefit from only tagging major, endgame relationships in the relationship tag while placing smaller relationships which are essentially plot devices (let’s be real, is there any other reason we put characters in relationships prior to their endgame relationship, even if we choose to expand on their first relationship and give it depth?) in the additional tags?
TLDR: it’s difficult trying to filter out certain fics if we don’t all tag in the same way, and unfortunately, the way some authors tag their fics invites the more pressed readers to bully them. To avoid this and maybe help reduce some tension in the fandom, why don’t we try only tagging major, endgame relationships in the relationship tag and all other ships essentially being used as plot devices in the additional tags?
