One sad side effect of big box stores is that you just don鈥檛 get lifelong hyper fixation guy access like you used to.
Like yeah I can go to Menards and buy a door.
But it used to be I could go to the door store, and speak to a man whose sole passion in life was doors and who would talk about the history of door insulation patterns over the last 50 years without stopping to breathe.
That man is gonna find me the BEST door option for me.
Seriously my neighborhood had one of these. They were across the street from the lighting shop owned by the guy who could tell you the exact date, off the top of his head, that your property got electrical wiring based on your address.
Now these guys rarely get to own a shop, make a good living, and sell the very finest doors for decades. They鈥檙e relegated to Reddit posts which are informative but ultimately do not replace door guy having a door shop.
I don鈥檛 want to talk to some miserable, underpaid 20 year old who was in plumbing last week and in doors this week and doesn鈥檛 know a hammer from a hanger.
I want my door guy back.

ultimately the truth about frankenstein is that we are all grotesque amalgamations of the best and worst parts of everyone who came before us. and sometimes the people who are supposed to love us because of and in spite of this will not. and we can kill them with hammers for that. and i think that鈥檚 beautiful

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

A rookie mistake is getting out of things by claiming a grandparent died. You can do that a maximum of four times per person, and that's assuming maximum social atomization, where nobody you know is likely to talk to each other and compare notes and realize that five of your grandmothers have died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the last three months. The winning play? Dead Uncles. You can have any number of dead uncles, because who knows how many siblings your parents have? You don't even need to keep the stories straight because if you slip up you can claim it was two separate uncle deaths. You can repeat names, even, one on each side of your family. Uncles often die in memorable ways so you can get flamboyant with the specifics. Motorcycle accidents, firework explosions, prostate cancer, rottweiler training mishap. It won't be that weird that you aren't particularly torn up about it. Maybe you didn't like your Uncle

Doc, what are the top five items food banks LOVE to receive? I'm doing a collection soon and want to ask for specifics.
MONEY. WE WANT MONEY. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY. WE CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT. WE HAVE ACCESS TO DEALS YOU COULD NEVER. MONEY
That aside.
聽I鈥檓 only going to talk about food items but if your food bank takes personal items, a lot of times diapers, feminine hygiene products, etc, are very very welcome.聽
1) Canned chicken and beef聽
Tumblr media
looooooove this stuff. It鈥檚 expensive, it lasts forever, it tastes good and it can be used a variety of ways. This stuff is fucking catnip to food banks, it鈥檚 so hard for us to provide proteins.聽
2) Fancy nut butters
Tumblr media
Peanut butter is a standby for food banks as a shelf-stable inexpensive protein, but if we have a family with a kid with a peanut allergy that鈥檚 not going to work. Non-peanut butters are expensive and it鈥檚 something we hardly ever see donated. (we also like peanut butter, but that鈥檚 easier for us to buy ourselves than non-peanut butters)
3) Canned or packaged tuna
Tumblr media
You may notice a trend here in shelf-stable proteins. And yeah. That鈥檚 basically it, so I鈥檓 not going to keep harping on it. But this stuff is a godsend.聽
4) Easy breakfast things for kids (Granola bars, instant oatmeal, and the like)聽
Tumblr media
Whatever Donald Trump tells you, most people who get food from food banks are actually working their asses off and so they have to leave Obama to raise their baby or whatever, and they don鈥檛 have a lot of time in the morning. Things like this that kids can make for themselves are expensive. (Another trend you may be noticing鈥揹onate shit that costs a lot of money. That helps us more than all the shitty green bean cans in the world) But they are so helpful for busy working families where the parents may not have a set schedule and sometimes little Amanda is making her own breakfast before she runs off to school. Don鈥檛 let kids go to school hungry.聽
5) Shelf-stable juice
Tumblr media
This is one people never think of! But if you show up with a bunch of (preferably reduced sugar stuff) bottles of juice at my door, oh man, you are gonna get so many check mark and okay hand emoticons. This stuff is great for kids, and it doesn鈥檛 require refrigeration until it鈥檚 opened, so it works great for food drives.聽
