Happiness and Success
All every living being wants is to be happy.
Happiness is an emotion. There is no quantified way to define or measure happiness. It is a state of mind. It is an emotion every one experiences during their life. Having said this, I have learned one thing. Happiness, more often than not, brings a smile on your face. A smile that reflects in your eyes.
We have all been blessed to have experienced many moments in of happiness in our life, and I am sure that there are many more to come.
As we spend more time and gain life experiences, we tend to attach happiness to success. We plan our days, set ourselves goals, and somewhere in the process of achieving those goals, we start believing that happiness is in achieving these goals.
Recently, I realised that been successful does not guarantee happiness. Primary reason for this thought is that success is subjective. In simple terms, success is only a part of happiness. An essential one, but still only a part.
In today's world, most people equate money and materialistic achievements to success.
Imagine that you get to have all the financial and material success you needed or want today. Are you sure you would be content and happy? The answer for most people would be yes. I would say Yes.
Off late, I have been doing a lot of introspection on this. I will try my best to share this with you.
Remember been a kid. What was happiness to you then? Not relatable? If so, there is a work around. Try and observe a baby around you. The younger the better.
You will see that this baby will smile for the smallest of things. As simple as a smile looking at the baby. You will also observe that the kid, while loves toys, prefers playing with simpler things like a spoon, a plate, a random object. These things will hold the kids attention for as long as a toy you spent thousands to buy for the kid.
For me, this leads to an interesting insight. Happiness in not about having nice luxury, but in simple things.
Another example.
Imagine the thing you desire the most. A thing that you have been working to get for a long time now. Something for which you are willing to sacrifice your time. Assume that this thing costs a lot. You worked really hard for a long time, and finally today, you can go and buy it for yourself. If you have an experience similar to this in your life, you will be able to relate better. Now imagine the excitement and joy you experienced when you were going to the shop to buy this, or in today's world, waiting for your trusted delivery partner to deliver this to your address. The moment you receive this item. The unboxing/unwrapping. The first use. It felt great right?
Now, imagine that you have owned this for the last 1 year. Do you still feel the same excitement and joy you did earlier? The answer, more often than not, is no.
Now lets rewind, and relive this build up, but ensure that we tried and enjoyed the process of getting this thing. Not just the buying, but saving enough to be able to buy it. Imagine enjoying this process.
Now, you would not feel the extra effort as a sacrifice. The item becomes just a trophy, and your happiness is not limited to a few days, but is spread across an year.
How to do this? This might sound philosophical, but it is actually very simple. Live and enjoy the moment.
Once you do this, you will see that you are happier than you were. Simply because happiness is not just success as defined by most today, but because it is the moments and the process. Happiness in the journey.
I hope that you enjoy your journey to all the goals you set for yourself.
