Hey! how's it going? Do you prefer character driven stories or plot driven ones? 😄

I prefer character driven stories. Don't get me wrong, plots are great but when they drive the story, there is always the issue of seeing the characters through a thick glass, if that makes sense. It feels disconnected, even though it could be one of the best pieces of writing. It ends up being too clinical. This is just my experience though.

A story with minimal plot is worse than one where it drives the story though. Feels like you are in a bad sims game. I can never understand why people like those things, it gives nothing. I deaded books for it so fast.

Obviously I don't expect the characters doing the driving to always do the pushing and not have things happening to them. It has to be ballanced right and reward patience and investment. The perfect combo will be character driven with plot driven intervals, I guess. 🤔

The idea that a platonic dynamic has to be family related to be "deep" annoys me. Sometimes people are just co-workers at best, sometimes they are rivals who will never forgive each other and just behave for the sake of a mission, they don't need to become best friends, mentor/protegee without having a parent/child relationship, those are all interesting on their own, I think it's weirder when this is done by authors than their fandoms, why are you so obsessed with a conservative nuclear family idea? Why are you structuring a trope badly, babe, this isn't Wattpad.

Then you get relationships like in certain book series, where there is barely any good build-up, no real connection, not enough to be called family: Two grown men who constantly call each other "brother" and think about old high school days, because apparently a guilt-based friendship with betrayal that keeps giving opportunities just so the other person can be selfish is not interesting on its own, A white girl being racist to a POC character and people constantly saying that is just banter and ignoring the power dynamics *cough mormon fantasy cough* and she ends up being the disposable girlfriend in fandom discourse, shocking, The main character has to die sacrificing himself and the character who did shit but is a fan favorite should get to marry his wife and raise his kid, we need a nuclear family!!!! It's tiring and boring

Authors should allow their characters to have different types of platonic relationships and interactions without this restriction and fandoms need to learn to discuss them without bringing their headcanons as if they're source material or just stay in their little space. If you need to change a character's entire personality to make them fit into a group, if you need to create unnecessary relationships to create a false sense of complexity because you couldn't develop naturally a mundane one, characters that constantly need to prove their worth to belong and beg for crumps isn't found family at all. All skill issues. Go watch lilo and stitch and learn from disney

I love how in almost every adaptation of "The Count of Monte Cristo" the Abbe's last words are something like "Remember, do not let vengance consume you. Promise me you won't seek revenge. Justice is served by God" or smth like this, while in the book, the literal source material, he just goes "Find the treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. Get the money" and then dies.

This book is so unhinged, I can't even. It's pure chaos. Don't let anyone ever convince you that it's sophisticated classic literature. Dumas loved drama, schemes, adventures and dumb ironic humor.
