nico being every camp kid’s emo older brother is SOOO dear to me. he acts like he hates it but if a kid is struggling you know nico will be on the scene helping them within the next three seconds. he’s always teaching them how to fight, fishing them out of the lake, cheering them on when stuck on the lava wall. he does laugh when they fall on their face but he also will absolutely hold their hand and comfort them while will patches them up. there’s a whole bunch of kids who start wearing eyeliner and black clothes because of him and follow him around. nico calls them posers but he’s actually a little flattered. he also sits with them at campfires and it’s so funny he looks like an emo mother hen with her emo babies. he loves them like they’re his actual little siblings and his heart breaks every year when summer ends and they have to say goodbye. the kids cry and he’s like ‘it’s okay i’ll see you in a few months stop crying’ and then cries in his cabin as soon as they’re gone. also he gives them a way to call him if they’re ever in trouble because he will NOT let another sibling die on his watch.

we've GOTTA collectively start writing Will as freakier i'm sorry. he willingly chose to not only date a Hades kid but to date the CREEPIER Hades kid. the one he watched killed multiple people. the one who has a habit of stalking people. the one everyone is fully convinced is cursed and/or evil. Will CHOSE THAT LIFE. Will is INTO THAT.

if you're not writing Will as daydreaming about a Morticia & Gomez Addams romance where they flirt in the camp morgue and Nico is actively trying to sacrifice him to dark spirits while in actuality Nico the magic the gathering nerd is mildly concerned why Will is so enthusiastic about showing off his bones and specimens collection to Nico (not that he's grossed out, it's just weird for somebody who's not him to be doing that) then you are missing out!!!!! make Will weirder!!!!

Just wanna take a second to appreciate Jennifer Lynn Barnes not just as a good storyteller but as someone who writes with so much psychological and emotional depth it's unreal. As someone who studied psychology, i can't help but notice how accurately she portrays the way people think, cope and carry their pain, you can feel her background in psych in every layered conversation, every quiet moment where someone is holding it together just a little too tightly, every character who’s "fine" on the outside but falling apart underneath.

She doesn't use trauma for shock value. It's not performative. It's real. Every character is hurting in a way that's theirs, shaped by who they are, how they think, how they cope (or don't cope). And that? that's rare.

JLB reminds us that trauma doesn't have to be loud to matter. It can be controlled, numb, logical, even cold and still hurt like hell.

and what really gets me is that her writing isn't just smart it's empathetic. You come out of her books understanding people better, feeling seen or at least realizing that there isn't just one way to break… and there's definitely not just one way to heal.

So yeah. She's not just an author i love, she's a writer i genuinely respect. And i'm so grateful for the way she writes characters who feel real and the way she trusts her readers to understand them.

As someone who studied psychology, I can't help but notice how rare it is to find fiction that treats trauma and mental health with the complexity they deserve. That's why reading Jennifer Lynn Barnes is such a powerful experience, she writes characters who feel real, not just because they're well crafted but because they're psychologically true.

And while not every author needs a psychology degree to get it right because there absolutely are writers who approach mental health with care, empathy and remarkable insight, it still makes me wish more authors and editors to have at least some foundational understanding of psychology or took the time to consult with mental health professionals when writing characters who carry trauma.

Because it's not just about "depth" or adding emotional weight for the sake of drama. It's about understanding how pain shapes behavior, how trauma can manifest in subtle, contradictory and deeply human ways, in silence, in control, in people pleasing, in detachment, in overachievement, in self doubt. It's about writing characters who aren't just hurt but who live with their hurt in ways that feel honest.

Psychological accuracy isn't about clinical precision. It’s about emotional truth. And when an author understands that with or without formal training the result is characters who don't just make sense. They resonate. They feel like someone you know. Or someone you could be.

That's what JLB captures so powerfully. Her characters are layered, guarded, strategic, numb, hopeful all at once. And she writes them in a way that trusts the reader to notice what's not being said, to read between the lines, to understand that not all pain is loud.

Her work is a reminder that trauma doesn't have to scream to be real. And healing doesn't have to look like a perfect arc. And honestly, I wish more fiction approached mental health with the same nuance, restraint, and empathy. Because when it's done right you don't just read the story. You feel seen by it.

why has everyone just decided to disregard everything that makes percy interesting?

we are always begging for a main character who is given a life outside of being a main character and then we were given percy jackson, a demigod in the summer, saving the world and looking good doing it, but is also just a kid.

he skateboards and collects them, he listens to punk rock and alternative rock (are they the same thing or is punk rock a sub-genre?) but doesn't dress 'alt' (like thalia) and has anger issues and has been kicked out of multiple schools for said anger issues, some of them being (court-ordered) military schools.

he also has problems with authorities who abuse their power (gabe, the gods, the nypd etc.) and will not hesitate to call you out on your bullshit no matter how powerful and important and feared you are.

but he has morals and doesn't do things without reason. he has a level of maturity and integrity that isn't even present in most adults. he is really smart and gets better grades than annabeth, and is the most considerate person you will ever meet. he is humble and never tries to be the center of attention.

he's not the most optimistic person in the entire world, but he tries to find reasons to be happy in really crappy situations (when they were traversing Tartarus and he was so happy that annabeth was with him that he started smiling).

he is always grateful for everything he has and tries to show genuine interest in all the things that interest his loved ones, even if they bore him to death (like annabeth with her architecture).

and we completely erase that for some reason to make him nothing but 'annabeth chases' boyfriend,' and, well he is her boyfriend, and he's very proud of that fact, but he is his own person as well.

people get really mad when we erase all of annabeth's character to make her nothing more than percy jacksons' girlfriend but we do it to percy all the time.

people need to stop misunderstanding grayson hawthorne, he's actually a 'wears his heart on his sleeves' guy. like he is a deep romantic, there's a reason it took him forever to get over emily, even though, like he said, he never truely loved her, only the idea of her, because he falls very deeply, cuz its a ya romance novel. the only reason he was rude to avery when he met her is cuz she inherited what he was told since birth would be his, and even then he's teaching her how to do everything with the foundation, and basically falling in love with her. He does bottle up his feelings obviously, but they come out very easily, like he famously is an incredible violin player because his emotions are obvious. he's a photographer, not some alpha buiness man who doesn't care bout anything but the grind. he grows very attached to eve very quickly, even more so to Gigi and Savannah, Gigi especially though, also Acacia. You could argue its because he saw people he already loved in them, emly in eve, xander in gigi, himself in savannah, nash (?) in acacia (this is less overt and i believe not textually stated like the others, but literally everyone in these books does this, avery sees herself in jameson and grayson, libby in nash (?), jameson sees himself in almost everyone icl, rohan, branford, his dad, then Tobias in the proprietor, there's also everyone having something in common with Tobias, thelove of riddles (even Sheffield Grayson with his mystery box), I believe the offical is nash got his saviour complex, grayson his perfection (???), Xander his brains and Jameson his hunger, which he also has in common with Toby, which is hilarious given the two aren't even related technically, there's Toby and Avery who are similar too, so really everyone is connected to one another, and also Grayson is deliberatly making these connections, therefore he is still seeing the people he loves in basically strangers.

All this to say, the progression of his relationship with lyra makes sense, there's this girl on the phone who seems simular to him(unwilling to open up), is a mystery (like truely almost everyone in this series he loves a mystery) and she opens up to him, kinda, but she tells him abt her trauma, he feels enderaed to her, he feels like its his job to make up for what his grandfather did, and she reminds him of himself. Then he meets her, she's beautiful and smart and everything he has been able to build up in his head over a yEAR, she's a bit rude but then he keeps needing to 'save' her, e.g. telling her not to fall off the cliffs, helping her through her flashbacks, they bond the same way Avery and Jameson do, through solving a puzzle, in fact they solve two. ofc people argue she's simular to avery, which i don't really see but ok, and that's just another reason for him to like her, also, they literally only kiss, savannah and rohan seem to be doing a lot more than that, Lyra and Gray had 'met' a year ago, she's obviously been on Gray's mind ever since, he was her celebrity crush (given how she called him due to the interview he gave with Avery), anyway it makes perfect sense, and that's coming from someone who loves a slowburn.
