The thing we have to be careful of is that the Internet is a global communications medium, and if one country tips the balance in regulating its use or regulating what companies or individuals do on the web, it could have an economic impact that might be unintended, quite frankly, by the regulations themselves.

The First Amendment offers strong protections against such restrictions
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”
The amendment protects freedom of speech. What people post on the internet is a form of free speech. Regulating it would result in censorship and the freedom is taken away.

Internet regulation is basically restricting or controlling access to certain aspects or information. Internet regulation consists of mainly two categories: Censorship of data, and controlling aspects of the Internet.

The Internet is simply enormous, growing rapidly and genuinely global and even if one wanted to, it is just not possible to regulate it.

Separation of platform and publisher
The platform is separate from the people who are posting on it, so they don’t associate with the things people post.

Social media are platforms, not publishers. They provide the means for large numbers of people to produce and consume information. They are open to both producers and consumers. Social media managers regulate the content on a platform, but the platform does not host everything that is posted on it.

Controls Fake/Biased News
Internet regulation would make fake/biased news much easier to spot. Regulation would require political ads and news articles to have a sponsor so they are more reliable.

The Internet not only has become dominated by these powerful companies but also is being used by companies, governments, and others to gather information on people and to actively misinform them

Controls hate speech
The companies interfere with the posts to control hate speech and delete harmful messages. They sometimes believe it is a reflection on them as a company or site, so they control what can be said and what cannot be said.

Speech on social media directly tied to violence—for example, terrorism—may be regulated by government, but more expansive efforts are likely unconstitutional. Concern about “interference” in U.S. elections glosses over the incoherence of current policies. Some foreign speech, online and off, is legal if the relationship of a speaker and a foreign power is disclosed.
