i had a dream that there was like a revival of the man vs bear debate but instead it was "would you rather be alone in a woman's bathroom with a random trans woman or jk rowling?" and everyone picked the trans woman and jkr crashed out on twitter because of it

Truly I hate to do this to you all but; you can watch all the videos and read all the blogs in the world but you cannot learn to sew without at some point picking up a piece of fabric and fucking it up. No tutorial exists that will stop you at some point ruining this poor piece of cloth. The visceral act of holding a project and wondering where you went wrong is the only way to learn sewing; you cannot escape it. I’m sorry

I feel like we need a refresher on Watsonian vs Doylist perspectives in media analysis. When you have a question about a piece of media - about a potential plot hole or error, about a dubious costuming decision, about a character suddenly acting out of character -
A Watsonian answer is one that positions itself within the fictional world.
A Doylist answer is one that positions itself within the real world.
Meaning: if Watson says something that isn't true, one explanation is that Watson made a mistake. Another explanation is that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle made a mistake.
Watsonian explanations are implicitly charitable. You are implicitly buying into the notion that there is a good in-world reason for what you're seeing on screen or on the page. ("The bunny girls in Final Fantasy wear lingerie all the time because they're from a desert culture!")
Doylist explanations are pragmatic. You are acknowledging that the fiction is shaped by real-world forces, like the creators' personal taste, their biases, the pressures they might be under from managers or editors, or the limits of their expertise. ("The bunny girls in Final Fantasy wear lingerie because somebody thought they'd sell more units that way.")
Watsonian explanations tend to be imaginative but naive. Seeking a Watsonian explanation for a problem within a narrative is inherently pleasure-seeking: you don't want your suspension of disbelief to be broken, and you're willing to put in the leg work to prevent it. Looking for a Watsonian answer can make for a fun game! But it can quickly stray into making excuses for lazy or biased storytelling, or cynical and greedy executives.
Doylist explanations are very often accurate, but they're not much fun. They should supersede efforts to provide a Watsonian explanation where actual harm is being done: "This character is being depicted in a racist way because the creators have a racist bias.'" Or: "The lore changed because management fired all of the writers from last season because they didn't want to pay then residuals."
Doylism also runs the risk of becoming trite, when applied to lower stakes discrepancies. Yes, it's possible that this character acted strangely in this episode because this episode had a different writer, but that isn't interesting, and it terminates conversation.
I think a lot of conversations about media would go a lot more smoothly, and everyone would have a lot more fun, if people were just clearer about whether they are looking to engage in Watsonian or Doylist analysis. How many arguments could be prevented by just saying, "No, Doylist you're probably right, but it's more fun to imagine there's a Watsonian reason for this, so that's what I'm doing." Or, "From a Watsonian POV that explanation makes sense, but I'm going with the Doylist view here because the creator's intentions leave a bad taste in my mouth that I can't ignore."
Idk, just keep those terms in your pocket? And if you start to get mad at somebody for their analysis, take a second to see if what they're saying makes more sense from the other side of the Watsonian/Doylist divide.

The problem with discussing anything complicated is that it's a real roulette whether you're going to have an intelligent, nuanced and practical conversation, or end up hearing some of the worst takes of your life.
I once had an economic conversation with a guy who was adamant that we should eliminate currency and go back to a barter system for world peace because "lots of people kill over money, but I've never heard of someone getting killed over a cow."
This was a real man who was actually serious and I had to see him every week to play Dungeons and Dragons.

So within two days of each other, Fox News writes an article comparing aromanticism and asexuality to pedophilia, and then Matt Walsh releases a video saying asexuality is a mental illness and asexuals are tricking teenagers into having depression.
Not sure what’s going on right now over in Conservative World, but it’s a hell of wild U-turn for them to suddenly switch from “Oh no! The left is sexualizing our children!” to “Oh no! The left is asexualizing our children!”

fatphobia and ableism is so insidious. You can look up like, food, and it'll say "eating a lot of food causes diabetes" and you're like oh dang what? I thought we didn't know the cause of diabetes. So you look up what causes diabetes and it says "we still don't know what causes diabetes" bruh they're just making shit up to give people eating disorders

🇺🇸recall of 86 different ready-to-eat items including sandwiches, snack boxes, pasta, and meal boxes after being linked to multiyear, multistate listeria outbreak🇺🇸
sold in arizona, california, nevada, washington, and possibly distributed to other states. sold at stores and food service locations including hospitals, hotels, vending areas, breakroom areas, convenience stores, airports, and airlines. sold under at least 3 different labels. investigations are ongoing.
quick reminder: listeria can take weeks to months to cause illness.
FDA outbreak investigation page : CDC outbreak investigation page
FDA publish date may 11, 2025
before I (rune) talk about the recall itself, let me back up a bit. if all you want is the recall list, the link is right there, or scroll down.
illnesses were reported as far back as 2023. investigations began in 2024, but the source could not be tracked down. FDA and CDC investigations were reopened in april 2025 after routine FDA inspection of fresh & ready foods revealed equipment contaminated with listeria. this delay is one reason why reporting food poisoning is so fucking important, and how going to a doctor helps protect others. cases of illness were linked together, but there was not enough evidence to figure out what sickened patients until now. listeria can be especially tricky to track down, because it can sicken people weeks to months after they eat contaminated food.
alright. back to the recall.
Fresh & Ready Foods is voluntarily recalling some ready-to-eat sandwiches and snack items sold in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington. This voluntary recall is being initiated due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.  The voluntarily recalled products were distributed between 04/18/2025 and 04/28/2025 in vending and breakroom areas within corporate offices, medical buildings and healthcare facilities located in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington. This voluntary recall is specifically limited to the products with the “Use By” dates from 4/22/2025 to 05/19/2025 as detailed below.
some emphasis mine. "ready-to-eat" means foods that do not require cooking before eating, which is why they often cause food poisoning.
this company has been sickening people at least as far back as 2023, but only products within these use by dates are being recalled. the food was sold labeled not just as "fresh & ready" but also as "city point market fresh food to go" and "fresh take crave away".
important: the FDA investigation notes that products may have been distributed and sold in other states. those four states are only where these products were confirmed to have been sold so far.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
listeriosis, which is illness caused by listeria, can be fatal.
Call a healthcare provider right away if you have these symptoms after eating the recalled foods. Pregnant women: Fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. Your illness may be mild, but Listeria can cause pregnancy loss or premature birth. It can also cause serious illness or death in newborns. Other people may have: Headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, in addition to fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. ... Symptoms usually start within 2 weeks after eating food contaminated with Listeria but may start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after.
(from the CDC investigation)
while no illnesses have been reported in the specific date range of food being recalled, 10 illnesses have currently been linked to this outbreak, and all 10 patients were hospitalized. the true number of people sickened by this outbreak is likely higher and potentially involves other states. the investigations are ongoing.
both the FDA and CDC recommend you throw out the recalled food and clean any surfaces the recalled food may have touched, including refrigerators. listeria can survive and grow in refrigerators.
the recall announcement includes how to get a refund.

and now for the giant fucking list of recalled food, typos and all. for the sake of keeping this readable because tumblr does not let me add tables: size, item number, container type, and use by date are excluded. check the recall page for that information, more product images, and more complete information about this recall.

remember: contaminated food may have been distributed and sold in the US beyond just the 4 currently confirmed states, and the locations of currently confirmed patients on investigation pages are NOT comprehensive lists of where people are at risk. a lot of people just look at the maps in the investigation links and consider them comprehensive despite what the text actually says. do not do that.
bookmark the investigations if you want to keep up with updates. I will also try to add updates in reblogs.
FDA outbreak investigation page : CDC outbreak investigation page
reminder: I do not post about every recall or foodborne illness outbreak, even just those in the united states. there are WAY fucking more recalls than the very few that I wind up posting.
check out the beloved, ugly, and half-broken recalls.gov for more links about recalls in the US. recalls are issued nearly every single day.
stay safe and take care!
