The tragic thing is Iran’s had four or five major popular uprisings in the last decade or so, the brutal crushing of which had drained much of what remained of the Islamic Republic’s internal legitimacy.

But that’s probably all done for the foreseeable future. Iranians have a “rally around the flag” effect when they’re attacked by foreign powers just like any other country would.

I hope it’s short-lived, and Iranians go back to hating their government and fighting for its overthrow soon. But if it’s not and they don’t, it’s easy to understand why. Israel just killed about the same number of Iranian civilians (somewhere between 500 and 1000) as were killed by the government in the violent repression of the last major uprising in 2022-23.

I can’t believe I needs to say this, but “I can reclaim x slur” does not mean “I can use that slur against others as a slur, specifically in order to denigrate them due to their marginalized identity.”

You can reclaim fag, sure. You can’t go around calling gay people you hate “degenerate fags,” and then hide behind “but I can reclaim it!” when people rightly call you out. You can reclaim retard, or cripple. But you can’t expect people to nod and agree and coddle you when you call people with developmental disabilities “fucking retards” and make fun of all the “whiny cripples” who need mobility aids, or braille, or closed captioning, or other accessibility accommodations.

You fundamentally can’t reclaim a slur in order to harm others – that’s not reclaiming the slur, that’s just using it.

Slur reclamation is not and was never a super special license to use slurs against others (provided that you yourself are sufficiently oppressed). It was never about that.

Some of y’all just want permission to be the bullies, and it shows.

I think 50 shades of grey did so much damage to BDSM writing in fic and like not because I think fic writers were taking inspiration from it, but we did get a lot of detailed explanatory posts about all the different ways in which those guys were Doing It Wrong, which is not in and of itself a bad thing but since then everybody got so hung up on making sure everybody in their fics was nothing like 50 shades of grey and actually demonstrates that yes I do understand the principles of safe sane and consensual and the traffic light system and safewording and aftercare and checking in that now everybody fucks like a 101 handbook and I think we've only just recently started to recover from it. love me a dynamic where it's two repressed freak idiots who accidentally invent BDSM all on their own and have to come up with the strangest most deeply harmful ways of navigating that situation

On April 17, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed into law House Bill 1193, “Requiring Efficiency For Our Colleges and Universities System and Education System (REFOCUSES) Act”; around here, people refer to it simply as the anti-DEI bill. The new law forbids a variety of DEI-related practices according to a set of tendentious definitions. One term, “diversity training,” is defined in a particularly expansive way: “any formal or informal education, seminars, workshops or institutional program that focus on increasing awareness or understanding of issues related to race, sex, color, gender identity, sexual orientation or national origin.”

The law establishes reporting requirements and a complaints process, and, starting next summer, it will allow for public hearings in front of the state legislature to investigate infractions. Institutions found to have violated the law are given twenty-five days to “cure all actions relating to the violation”; leaving violations uncured can lead to court injunctions to comply with the law, and repeat violations are grounds for state funds to entire school districts to be withheld until the “violating entity demonstrates full compliance with the provisions of this act.”
