What to do when you get sick ?
Today I am going to interview my cousin Diamond who currently has covid.. I believe this was a good decision because I can get accurate information from her and understand how she feels about the health system today !
Whom do you call and why ?
I usually call my mom because she works at a hospital and she would normally know what to do. She would ask me my symptoms that helped her diagnose what's wrong with me. For example, currently my Covid symptoms are sore throat and eye swelling. From there on she would decide if I needed to see a doctor or not.
What strategies do you use to get well?
Strategies that I usually use to get well are resting , cold & flu medicine , ginger tea , and eating. Some that I am currently taking are quarantining , cough medicine, drinking soup , and prayer. I don’t get sick often and it doesn't usually take long for me to get better so I let time take its course and I fight this illness to the best of my ability.
What strategies do you use to relieve the pain?
I come from a Caribbean household , and oftentimes when I experience pain I usually let time help me get over it. Where my family is from we do not put our trust in hospitals, so I would normally warm up a heat rag and allow it to help the pain. Another remedy is taking pain meds or stretching that specific area.
Are your healing strategies specific to your family, ethnic group, religious affiliation or local or national context?
My healing strategies stem from my Caribbean upbringing. Growing up there was a homemade remedy from most illnesses. For example , making natural ginger tea , using herbs , using aloe vera for cuts and scrapes , and more. Going to the doctors is absolutely necessary when you are severely ill or hurt .
How do you figure out what made you sick so you don’t get sick again?
Normally I would research similar symptoms or ask my mother. However , in my current situation I got Covid from my roommate at school. Now we both have to quarantine so we do not infect others and so we can heal properly. As stated before , I don’t get sick often and it doesn't take long to overcome my illness so I don’t normally have to make hospital visits.
When you are sick, how do you keep others from being infected?
When I am sick , I usually let everyone know that I am sick. I take proper precautions like wearing my mask , keeping my distance from others , and making sure I don’t make mouth to mouth contact with anyone.
How do you feel about getting sick?
I feel shocked , because I never expected to catch Covid. I am very careful and I take precautions to be sure this does not happen. I learned a lesson also that even if you are careful you can still be infected and you can do everything to make sure this does not happen.
Is there a social cause of your illness or disease?
Yeah most times. In my case today it was definitely a social cause because of how Covid is transmitted. I was in contact with another person who had Covid but was unaware. Other times simple things like cold weather can make me sick, not dressing properly in certain circumstances. Other people have different body tolerance and can get sick easily.

The American Dream
My knowledge
As I've mentioned in a previous fieldwork assignment, Both of my parents are from Kingston, Jamaica. I was raised with different cultural norms and different behavioral patterns. I love my Jamaican culture and family. Growing up, I would ask my family members why they come to America when Jamaica is so beautiful and better in my opinion. Almost everyone who asked that question's response was “ for a better life”. Of course, as a kid, I did not understand what that meant. The older I became the more I understood why they migrated to a new country. From their perspective, things were the complete opposite of how others viewed their country.
My stepfather’s story
My name is Dennis Auld. I was born in Porus Manchester, Jamaica. I was raised in a single-parent household, with several siblings and family members. I would say that in my country live is not a very easy place to build yourself. My push and pull factor to come to America was to build something for myself. My family and childhood were not typical family homes. I came to live in America when I was twenty years old. I spent my first couple of years in Brooklyn, Newyork. I now reside in Philadelphia. I started as a construction worker, then began a cleaning program and now I am a well-developed business owner.

Overall, my migration process was quite simple. You may not exactly understand when I say in my country It’s hard to build your life. Things are not as simple as it is here in America. For example, finding steady income, in my company the job market is very low and usually directed towards the higher educated. In addition, the education system is not very up to par either and I believe violence intervenes with that particular issue. Most people in my country like myself come to America to seek the “ American Dream” which is a better and easier life. There are more opportunities and advantages that we can learn from in America. Today I am fifty-two years old and I can say that many of the accomplishments that I have I would not have if I were still to reside in Jamaica.
Throughout my migration process, I have experienced several bridges and barriers. For example, I was not granted proper education growing up. Everything was more of a life lesson learned. This was a huge disadvantage in my life because it held me back from many opportunities. For example, I didn't learn how to properly read and write until my twenties. Even today I still struggle with understanding certain concepts because I was not granted certain educational skills as a child. This deficiency has held me back from green card ownership, citizenship, and more.
Overall , I can say that if I were to stay in Jamaica I would not be able to build the life and establishments I have in my life today !

HERSHEY REVIEW <3

Hello , My name is Hershey Almond chocolate bar. I've been through quite a journey and allow me to tell you about my upbringing. Those who are involved with my creation have existed for many years before me. I was introduced to the world in 1908. A company named Hershey Trust Company is responsible for my existence. My ingredients are sugar , milk , chocolate cocoa butter, lactose , vanilla artificial flavoring , roasted almonds tossed in cocoa butter or sunflower oil. The roasted almonds come from a fruit on an almond tree and the cocoa butter comes directly from cocoa beans. These two are the most significant ingredients of my creation , which is why I am different from the other products. Hershey is one of the largest producers of chocolate and candy in the world. Making over six billion dollars in sales every year you would expect the working conditions of the employees would be well managed and in a proper environment. However , the company faces many disadvantages when it comes to labor issues in West african cocoa communities , involving child labor. Some believe that Hershey is not doing enough to stop labor exploitation on cocoa plantations. The company has a passion for ethics, value, and social responsibility so this issue is something that would not be expected. Hershey strives to address their business strategically and fairly. Their packing process is fairly simple , after all products are manufactured the products are loaded onto pallets and trucks , then transferred to a warehouse where orders will be assembled then delivered to markets.
Pricing is one of the main components of business. Hershey is very careful about the pricing approach the company should use. There are two approaches to use , cost based pricing and value based pricing. Hershey uses cost based pricing which means they price their product based on what it costs to manufacture the product and provide the service.
International corporations like Hershey are Nestled , Mars , Mondelez Ferrero group and more. These companies' trade are regulated by the FDA which ensures food safety and quality standards. The chocolate industry is marketed by people , television , holidays, special events , radio and more. I bought my Hershe almond chocolate bar from CVS in Philadelphia. I learned that each storeuu, depending on the brand of the chocolate bar , can make up to 15% profit off cocoa bars.
Overall , Hershey chocolate almond bars have come a long way and are a huge success all over the world!

Fieldwork Chapter 10 Social Class
Marx
Karl Marx argues that society’s “class” is based on whether an individual's position within a class is determined by the role or position in the production process. He argues that capitalism, political advantages, and ideology. He defines social class as a social relationship rather than a rank or placement in society. The article below demonstrates employees go on a demanding strike fight for equal pay and fair treatment. These women speak out on the barriers they experience in their work field. This movement is a continuation in cities all over the US. People constantly face unfair treatment and receive lower wages than another who does the same work and is considered to be in the same social class. Personal relationships should not play a part in deciding wages, equal pay and fair treatment should be in place.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/equal-pay-day-women-rally-against-wage-gap-workplace-discrimination-n742451
Weber
On the other hand, Weber argued that owning property is what determines an individual's social class. He believes that power and wealth play a huge part in your social status. It can be presented in many forms such as property and managing corporations. He believed that prestige and wealth are intertwined. The article below demonstrates Weber’s social class theory. For example, it breaks down the advantages of power, wealth, ownership, class, and life changes. Explaining how social class is a result of power. Displaying how an individual can get their way despite their opposition.

Bourdieu
Lastly, Bourdieu's theory of social class is simply a group of individuals that share a common nature and external living conditions. He explains that social class is not defined by any ownership or any particular property. Between Bourdieu, Marx, and Weber, I believe that Bourdieu has the simplest theory of social class. In this article, researchers go in-depth of Bourdieu's theory and apply it to social science today. For example, the article states that Bourdieusian sociology takes advantage of opportunities associated with digital communication technologies.

Fieldwork Chapter 9

This is my family tree which mostly consists of my matrilineal kinship. My mothers family is relatively small and I am not very close or familiar with my patrilineal kinship.
My mother is the last after two older sisters. One of her sisters (Tamara) passed away shortly after having her child. Her oldest sister Tania has two children. Neither one of my Aunt’s were married after having their children. Lastly , there's me, my mothers only child. My grandmother (my mothers mom) died before I was born. My grandfather lives in Jamaica and my mother never grew up with him so it's hard to gather information from their side of the family. My mother knew my father for a long time before I was conceived. They were teenage lovers. Over time, my relationship with my father became nonexistent. I don’t communicate with him due to personal issues so it’s hard for me to gather any information about that side of my family. Relatively , my immediate family is very small and not very close which is kind of strange. We all live separate lives and we are not very inclusive of each other. However , we try to come together for special occasions such as birthdays , holidays , etc!
This assignment was kinda of hard because of my family’s relationship status. Nobody every really has answers to my questions and I can only write about what I experience and see throughout my life.

In this image my Aunt ,her son, and her young daughter is on the left. Me and my mom are in the middle in white , and my cousin is on the far right ( her mom Tamara passed away shortly after having her).

Chapter 7 Your Turn FieldWork
First and Second Ad
https://www.adforum.com/creative-work/best-of/15361/best-ads-directed-towards-children/play#34557370
The first ad I watched was a Lego ad targeted at both boys and girls. However, watching the video you notice that there was only one girl in the video. All the other kids were boys and mentioned what they would build using the legos. I think the technique they used to draw children's attention was a very good strategy. They allowed the kids in the ad to describe what they would build using legos and that would encourage other kids who are watching to want to build things too. From my experience with younger children, I know that Legos is a toy that young boys are more interested in than girls. This toy can still be used by both young boys and young girls. In all, I would say that this toy is welcome for both boys and girls to play with but I believe that the ad would be more effective on young boys.
The second ad I watched targets both boys and girls. The ad is narrated by a young girl who is bringing her imagination to life. The ad focuses on children who spend time in the hospital at places that even adults know can be scary. I loved the technique the creators of this ad used because it helps children who can recreate their environment. For example, the girl imagines her getting a CT scan as her being an astronaut in her suit taking off for space. This ad can be influential on boys and bring out their imagination when in scary situations or difficult times.

Third Ad
https://youtu.be/Y_iCIISngdI
This last ad is by Nike and is titled what are girls made of. This ad is targeted toward young girls. The technique used was having a young singer sing a song about what girls are made of. It allowed young females to be aware of their capabilities. Influencing those to believe they are achievers! This ad promoted girl sportswear but also motivated girls.
Gender Roles
Gender roles are how people are expected to act, dress, groom, and conduct themselves based upon their assigned sex. After watching these ads and asking myself, do we humans actively create gender roles? I believe that sometimes people aren't even realizing that they are creating gender roles. I can admit that I do, as stated in the first ad observation I mentioned that Legos are more of a toy for boys. I think gender roles are based on your upbringing and what you were exposed to as a child. Some people are used to things being a certain way and men and women playing certain roles in their household. I do not believe creating gender roles is always bad thing in certain circumstances. For example, people are trying to expose children to certain things at an early age and that can sometimes negatively affect that child ,like create confusion. On the other hand I do believe that gender roles do not have to be followed. If someone is passionate about something I believe they should see it through confidently! Be who you are and do not apologize for it .

What Is the Relationship of Ethnicity to the Nation? Chapter 6 Fieldwork
Background
I was born in the Bronx, New York and I grew up both in the Bronx and in Philadelphia. Both my mother and father were born and raised in Jamaica. Therefore, my race is black or African American and my ethnicity is Jamaican / Caribbean American. My family has a strong relationship with their ethnicity, nationality, and nationalism. This has played a huge part in raising me and developing my cultural beliefs and values. Both of my parents have lived in the U.S for about twenty years. I wouldn't agree that my family has completely embraced American nationalism but they had to adapt to it. I say this because even after living here for twenty years they still hold and carry their cultural values at a high standard, which is passed down from generation to generation in my family. I don’t notice my family integrating their culture with American culture often. Most of the time my family is fully authentic with their beliefs and cultural behaviors down to the accent. However, after asking my mother how she fluctuates between the two she explained that American culture has some differences and one skill she developed was learning how to be understood by Americans.
Image of me & my parents

Image of my Grandmother & Aunt ( Could not find any photos of my great great grandparents)

In-depth, when it comes to my ancestry line, I am still on the curious side. I asked my mother a few questions to which she did not have many answers. However, I learned that my great-grandmother was from an Arawak descendant. Sadly, my mother did not learn much about her or her other grandparents' history. In addition to current knowledge, I know my father's great-grandmother was Indian. I am not close to my father anymore so that's as much information I currently have about my ancestry culture.
Overall, this research affects me in many ways. I feel like there is more about my family line that I don’t have control over getting to know due to my family's circumstances. Ethnically, I love my cultural upbringing and I will carry my cultural heritage throughout my life and the family I make.

CH. 5 YOUR TURN FIELDWORK
White Supremacy
https://youtu.be/8B-cqrLnxi4
The belief that whites are biologically different from and superior to people of other races. White supremacy compels white people to side with the ruling class in order to obtain certain rights and privileges . For example , Police brutality is a representation of white supremacy. Some white officers grant themselves the right to violently disrupt someone's life because they are “authority”. The police is a system that serves and protests only one thing, those of a higher ruling class ( white supremacist) The image below represents police brutality against a man of color who is unarmed and was not resisting arrest initially.

Whiteness
https://youtu.be/4I84jxCNsmo
https://www.yesmagazine.org/social-justice/2017/07/24/10-examples-that-prove-white-privilege-exists-in-every-aspect-imaginable
A culturally constructed concept originating in 1619 Virginia, is there to establish clear boundaries of who is white and who is not. Witness is what introduced white privilege. White entitlement stems from whiteness being the standard of society. For example , a white person is more likely to be approved for loans than a blak person. Whiteness has even shaped our history. Have you ever wondered why on all of our printed bills there is a white person? White people have the privilege of the benefit of the doubt which is simply the privilege to just be. Below is a section of an article where an article written by a white woman named Jon Greenberg notices the reality of Whiteness in society.

Microaggression
Common , every day verbal or behavior in the indignities and slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, and negative messages about someone’s race ,gender ,sexuality, or religion. One example of microaggression that I have heard in school was disregarding religious traditions or their details , even after explaining to them. In a Philadelphia, high school a basketball student was forced to leave the game for wearing hijab a religious veil worn by Muslim women . She wore the hijab in previous games and had no issues. Below is a section of the article where the students express her feelings of the situation.

Individual racism
Personal prejudice, belief, and discriminatory actions based on race. One example of individual discrimination is , a professor banning black women form taking their course. Another example would be a patient not wanting care from a black nurse or doctor. Below are some images of racial discrimination.

Racialization
The process of categorizing differentiating an attribute in a particular racial character to a person or group of people. One example of racialization is African American women being stereotyped as uneducated, loud, ghetto, or improper. Some argue that everyone is racialized , including white people. Below is a prime example of racialization because many people blame those from China responsible for the virus.

Chapter 4 Fieldwork Assignment Language

Discussion - What irreversible affect did COVID-19 have on you ?
What are differences in body language, eye contact, and style of speaking between the men and women?
Observing the men ( One) I noticed that he was very straightforward and to the point. It was more lengthy than others which is unusual but he was still on point. The women kind of drifted off topic after addressing their point which caused the conversation to change. Each woman causes the conversation to change in their own way by stemming off their point. Both men and women gave direct eye contact to the class and instructor. Women used more hand gestures to help describe what they were talking about and to show emotion. For example , one girl touched her heart helping us understand how much something meant to her.
Do the men or the women keep their cameras on more?
This class was in person due to the fact that I did not have any remote classes for the rest of the week because they were canceled. However , hypothetically I believe that men are more likely to have their camera on. I think this is because women are more conscious about their appearance. If they are not looking presentable at the moment they probably would not want to show their face. If their camera is on it is usually pointed at the ceiling.
Is the instructor a man or woman? How do they encourage or discourage communication? Consider their body language and gaze.
Our instructor is a woman. She is our honors English instructor. This class requires much discussion. Our teacher uses real world examples and scenarios in her teaching strategy that forces the students to voice their opinion. I know the students enjoy this portion of the class because it gives everyone a chance to express how they feel about certain aspects of society.
Does the instructor’s gender seem to influence the way they interact with the class? If so, how?
I do not believe the instructor's gender influences the way she interacts with the class. However , I do believe her personality influences the way she interacts with the class. She is very open and considerate towards the students. This is a positive impression on the class because the students can feel comfortable sharing their stories and opinions during discussion in class.

Songs

This song represents AAVE dialect. in the first line you notice the word of choice that represent African American Vernacular English. This part of the song can present the power men sometimes have over woman. Even tho he is referring to someone from his past life. Drake simply saying “I’m just sayin’, you can do better”. Woman would take that as offense and you can tell that he is trying to get through to her by saying offensive things.

This song represents Jamaican Patios dialect. You notice that in this song the words are understandable, but written different than how a typical American would say them. In this song it represent power of woman. Shensea said “You cyan tell me , Was fi do , Weh fi go , How fi dress….”. She is expressing that men do not have control over her. Often times men try to control their woman and block their right to do as they please. Some men believe that because you are together you have to ask permission to dress a certain way or act a certain way in order to be with them , or even just so they feel like they are on a higher pedestal in the relationship.

Mapping a Block Fieldwork
Map ( I tried )

The location I chose was Morgan States Tyler hall quad. It's located right in front of my dorm building Cummings. I was drawn to this location because I believe the most social activity happens here. Each night college students hang out and chill in this area. Some students just sit and listen to music through their speakers and others race on the scooters available on campus. I even found out that some people who hang out in this area possibly do not even attend the university. One thing that I never noticed before is that everyone is divided into different groups. Everyone does not socialize together; they socialize in cliques. On the other hand, one thing that is expected is more trash cans. I noticed that there are large decorative ornaments that resemble trash cans but are not. Another thing that might be expected is more charging outlets given the popularity of the area. In terms of COVID-19, this social area negatively impacts the progress of controlling the virus. People are being irresponsible by not keeping proper distance or wearing masks. I avoid hanging out in this area simply because of COVID-19. My friends and I try our best to avoid large crowds, however, that can be very difficult here on campus. Altogether , I believe this particular spot on campus was a perfect location for this assignment due to the frequent social encounters that happen here .

Chart

Most Important Item ( MY PHONE )

Paragraph
After creating this chart, I realized that I am not much of an unpretentious person. I take deep value in the things I want and need. I know that I can live without the things that I want, but I know without them my life would be completely different. I would have an entirely different personality. Sometimes I don’t realize how privileged I am and this assignment has brought that to my attention. Being able to have the things you want and need is truly a blessing. Many people around the world can hardly afford or obtain the things they need to survive their everyday lifestyle. On the other hand, I believe that sometimes only having what you need is not enough or satisfying. Our society today is a working community that strives for what they want in many different ways. For example, college students here at Morgan State University are all working hard to maintain their studies to obtain the degree they want. As a result of completing this chart, I’ve learned to always be humble and appreciative of the advantages that I have. I learned to always give thanks to God and thank him for every blessing he has given me. Lastly, I learned to strive for what I want because what I need is not enough for me.

Unfamiliar Electric fan

History
Did you know that fans have existed for over a millennium? Long ago Egyptians used leaves as their fan and people from different descendants used peacock feathers. The first electric fan was introduced in 1882 and had advanced over time. An American electrical engineer named Schuyler Wheeler invented the desktop fan originally with two blades. By 1889 Philip H. Diehl mounted a fan blade on a sewing machine motor inventing the ceiling fan. The evolution of electric fans has become more than just creased cooling and improved air conditioning when most needed. Fans can now be used as aesthetic decorative pieces for homes and they are now available in different kinds of designs to fit personal interiors. Modern-day fans can now be remote controlled and digitally controlled. Electric fans continue to progress and become more essential in many different ways than their original design of use.
https://finolex.com/evolution-of-fans/
Manufacture
All over the world people used different mechanisms to create and manufacture fans that provided a cooling environment. For example, a man from Florida used blades to fan air from ice to cool down sick patients. Today fans are made and manufacture all over the world in many different ways.
Impact
Electric fans are convienent for the environment. It can be beneficial in health situations and extreme humidity. It impacts my life by providing cool air in over heated rooms or buildings. For example, when I was shopping for college , an electric fan was a necessity on my shopping list. it was also recommended by the University. Its helpful in my living situation because when my roommate turns off the air conditioning my fan can keep me cool without it being too cold in the entire. Electric fans satisfy my preferred temperature demands.
Involved
There are many companies that are involved with making electric fans. Some brands that are very popular are Honeywell, Dyson, Hunter, etc. Most electric fans are manufactured in China, where many companies produce similar products. The people involved in making this product make billions of dollars. For instance, Honeywell’s revenue for the ending of June 30, 2021, was $8.808B. In my opinion, due to my research, I would say that electric fans are a very useful and profitable product that does not decrease in value.
