#Westeros I did this collage drawing 3 years ago after the banners were finished. I got bored, so I came up with this design as a way to say goodbye to the project. Now I colored it to sort of say goodbye to the project as a whole. I mostly wanted to pick the most fun sigils to draw. There's no Lannister or Frey since I am have drawn both of those so much already. The blue and orange vairy background turned out great! Those colors belong to an obscure house in the Crownlands. #HouseMormont of #BearIsland in #TheNorth No spoilers, but that was a helluva episode, wasn't it? I completely forgot the story of Jorah's descent. He won a tourney, and the hand of a Southron lady, whom he brought back to Bear Island. The lady went from balls and mummers to dense stew and a rustic island full of bear shit. Jorah tried to please her by spending money on her expensive tastes, eventually selling a few poachers into slavery to drum up the coin to keep her. It was not to be. She left and Ned was on his way to Bear Island with Ice when Jorah fled to Essos. This model of bear (which is very un-heraldry like) is based off thr first banner I did for #Mormont. #SerDuncantheTall This is the personal banner for Ser Duncan the Tall who rose up from the nothingness of a hedge knight into the annals of history as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. This is supposedly the shield that Brienne found at Tarth, which hints at her lineage. Duncan's stories are a slow burn of character and very specific historical events. The banner is an elm tree with a green shooting star on a sunset field. This is one of the rare banners where I actually use blending (its in a few others but not many). I wanted to to this one right, so I ended up doing a full practice banner to get the blending right. It was one of the last one I finished since it was pretty daunting. I don't jnow if #GRRM will ever finish Duncan's novellas. #HouseTarth of #EvenfallHall in the #Stormlands was that a fucking episode last night, or what!? The episode title, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" refers to #BrienneofTarth the most well-known figure of this house. I won't say much about the episode other than it really hit home how much I love her character. A couple weeks ago, I read that #GRRM said there was a clue as to which character was descended from #DuncantheTall. Brienne found his shield at Garth, hinting she is his descendent. This would so badass for a number of reasons, most of which is that they are very similar in terms of chivalry and honor. Also, the name of the book that was published about Duncan the Tall? "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". My theory is the episode title was a wink that she's connected to Duncan the Tall (who Old Nan mentions to Bran in the pilot, as Bran liked those stories). Tarth itself is a windswept rock that is very green and definitely not filled with emeralds. #HouseTully of #Riverrun in the #Riverlands I know I did this one already, but I've been reading #FireandBlood and found this juicy Tully tidbit. During the civil war known as the #DanceoftheDragons, the lord of Riverun was Lord Grover Tully. Little antiquated name. Then, when the lord died during the dance, his grandson tool over. His name? Ser Elmo Tully. Hold on! He had two sons who became renowned after the war ended. They along with Benjicot Blackwood were known as the Lads. The two brothers were Kermit and his younger brother Oscar. Kermit is 19 and described as "very green", Oscar, being second born, "was greener and had a prickly temperament" aka he was a grouch! #housepaege of the #Riverlands. This is one of the sigils on Big Walder Frey's banner. His mother was Sallei Paege. There's really not much to say about them. It's a house that doesn't appear to have a keep or land, or even house words yet. I'm actually posting this at work since there are network issues with the servers and I can't do 98% of my job without it. Thankfully my job doesn't deal with deadlines (no, wait, yes it totally does), so I can update this page! This is one of those houses where none of the characters play a material role in the world of the story. You know what's funny? When I started srawing these things over 4 years ago, it would take a lot of energy and motivation to put even 30 minutes into one. Now, when I don't have any momentum with my other art projects, I work in these as a form of exercise to ge the ball rolling. The best part of these banners is the decision-making is pretty minimal (drawing a comic book page? #housedarry of #darry in the #Riverlands . A black plowman on a brown field. This house appears along Crakehall on Little Walder's banner. I just now noticed how there's a slight racial charge to that description, but is what it is. This house had Ser Raymun Darry is a bannerman to Robb Stark, although he is killed at the Battle of the Mummer's Ford. Hos son Lyman joined him soon later. Judging by the amount of dead people on the wiki page, this house may be thinning out. They are descended from the #FirstMen and can trace their line to fighting the #Andal invaders. Both of these colors were super fun to draw with. Both this and Crakehall I had chosen Sienna for the brown and it worked out that the Little Walder banner used both, so the colors neatly matched. I don't know what it is about the plowman, but I was pleased with how it turned out. I think it's because when I look at it, there's a sort of tension I feel seeing him really leaning into that plow. I also just found out that Little Walder, his sister is Fat Walda Frey, wife of Roose Bolton. Thos is one of those houses that has the same name of the ancestral home. Crakehall is one of the sigils on the banner for Little Walder #Frey . They are descended from Crake the Boarkiller from the Age of Heroes, which makes this house up to 5000 years old. They are legit. They have several appearances or mentions in the books. The most well-known character from the books is Ser Lyle "Strongboar" Crakehall, who fights in service for the Lannisters. Her is an able knight, and doesn't appear to be one of those shithead knights, but a true knight in the sense of the word. Jamie thinks that Strongboar is one of the few knights who could take him on in a fight. This color is #siennabrown and it was one of my favorite colors to work with. The color is a vibrant, living brown and the pencils were easy to use and the color was consistent. "Big Walder" Frey of #housefrey in the #Riverlands . This is the other 9 year old Walder that I referenced earlier. He is 52 days older than his cousin, but smaller and skinnier. The other quads on the banner belong to #houseblackwood in the upper right and #housepaege in the bottom left. He doesn't have a big part in the books. Often times, #GRRM just assigns random banners to insignificant people, and I'm left trying to remember who the hell a lot of these people are. You remember Lord Rossart? No? Well, he has his own banner as well! He was a crooked maester that was obsessed with wildfire. Or how about Ser Quentyn Ball aka Fireball? He has one as well that I drew and I dont even remember which time period he lived in (predates the Dunk and Egg stories I think). #housetrant in progress. Having art day at my buddy Amy's place. The final version of Trant I have I never really cared for, so I'm doing this one. The banners look so much different during production. The final product is wiped with cotton balls to remove the waxy substance and produce a sheen. Then it's sprayed with Krylon anti-yellowing spray. The outline of the shield is drawn on back. I just color over where they before cutting it out from behind. This was a fairly easy one to do. This coloring was done in an hour maybe. "Big Walder" Frey of #housefrey of #thetwins in the #Riverlands Quartered: House Frey in quadrants I & IV, #housebracken in II and #housefrey in III I'm just gonna go ahead and get through the Frey banners since there's several. This coat-of-arms belongs to a mean 9 year old who is big and mean. Like most of the lickspittles that infest the Frey house, this guy was named after Lord Walder Frey to win his favor. The naming conventions in #asongoficeandfire get a little confusing at times. Outside the Targaryen family (with their 12 different Aegons), the Freys are the hardest to follow. Little Walder is younger than his cousin Big Walder, and yes, Little Walder is a big, fat, mean kid and his cousin Big Walder is a skinny twerp. Then there's Black Walder, another mean and gruesome motherfucker. He's basically the Frey's version of the Hound. They're not super important in the story, but they each have a banner, so that makes them important to me. I will say the personal coat of arms were the least enjoyable to draw. Ser Cleos Frey of #housefrey of #casterlyrock This is the first individuals banner I've done. A lot of solo banners prefer to have a quartered field, often times using both parents sigils in their own. Cleos Frey did just that. You'll remember him as the knight who accompanied Brienne and Jamie after his released to find her daughters. One of my favorite things about Frey characters is that they are very droll after one of them dies. This was a fine example of a banner I did not want to do. Quartered banners ALWAYS took way longer than one that wasn't. And most of the personal banners were quartered, so I quickly grew to loathe them. Those were my "final boss" type banners I just had to sludge through because they were so time consuming. This one had the distinction of my two least favorite banners to draw (mostly because I've already drawn them so much.). The funny thing about this banner is that now I have since drawn new sigil for each of the #frey and #lannister and I could probably do one that rocks your goddamn socks off....I'll make note to do a new one. I like doing new ones from time to time as well.
