Aileen “Lee” Wuornos was an American serial killer who killed her clients for financial gain when she was working as a prostitute. Wuornos had a troubled childhood, which can perhaps explain why she committed such heinous crimes: Her father was a convicted paedophile, and was arrested straight after she was born. A few years later, he hanged himself in prison. Wuornos’ mother became mentally unstable, and refused to get help. She abandoned young Aileen and her brother, leaving them with her parents, Wuornos’ grandparents, and their children. Just when it seemed she couldn’t have had any more bad luck, Wuornos’ grandfather severely beat her for fun and her grandmother was an alcoholic. At 11, realising she was receiving no attention at home, Aileen began trading sexual favors for money, beer, and cigarettes. At age 14, she became pregnant and had her first and only baby; neighbours claimed the father was an older adult friend of her abusive grandfather, but others speculate that he might have fathered it himself, as he had now begun to rape the future serial killer. The child was given up for adoption. Soon after, she was kicked out the house by her so-called family. This is when she began hitchhiking, and met her long-time girlfriend, Tyria. Aileen started killing men in the late 70s. When she was arrested, she claimed they had all tried to rape her. This was never proven.

In his short 17 months of life, Peter knew only a life of pain, abuse, neglect and violence. He was visited over 60 times by Haringey's social services, yet he died at the hands of his mother and her boyfriend.
