One thing that I think really endeared Pearl to Gem during secret life was that Pearl never put her in a leadership position. Gem says that she doesn't like being forced to be in charge of people, whether it's down to her task or just the fact that her teammates defer to her judgement a lot of the time.

But Pearl doesn't do that. When they're on the murder camel Pearl's the one driving. She doesn't order Gem around or anything like that but she does kinda take the lead, and Gem seems comfortable letting her do it.

Even before that, in the zombie episode, Pearl doesn't follow Gem and goes off to summon some wardens instead, which prompts Gem to say "She's the best boogie I've ever recruited".

I feel like it explains a lot about why that relationship meant so much to Gem. Pearl didn't care about her reputation, she didn't expect her to be a leader, she just wanted to hang out and do some murder together. It was something special to Gem and I think that's why, in wild life, she's so upset about the way things ended between them.

I'll always be curious how close Gem actually was to betraying the Scotts in secret life. Scott seemed pretty concerned about her leaving them for Pearl. He brings it up several times, even in the finale when they're fighting the Mounders he still makes a point to tell her that Pearl's the one shooting her.

He mentions it again in wild life. When he sees Gem and Pearl arguing in episode 2 he says to Gem "Last time you two were close to abandoning our allyship so you can be besties. You were camel buddies." And Gem doesn't deny it at all, she just says "Then she 2v1ed me!".

It does make me wonder. Gem specifically told them to go after Joel and Bdubs first. If everything had gone the way she wanted, would she have teamed up with Pearl to kill Scott and Impulse at the end?

Pearl being so focused on helping her allies win in the life series is so interesting to me because she already did it once before, right? She was instrumental to Scott's win in last life, she literally gave him two of her lives.

Her trying so hard to help someone else win almost feels like her trying to prove that she's still the same person was then, that she's over everything that happened in double life. But it never seems to work out.
