Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! The OG posts were lost with the hacking of my original Twitter account (@/bagels_donuts) but I’ve since reuploaded the whole thread to my new Twitter (@/ItsDonutsFR)! Rock E Rumble Demo Screen

That's right, folks! We're just a few months away from the release of the Rock E Rumble Gameplay Demo! You can expect to see this iconic shot of Rocky and Kiki as part of our promotional campaign through the fall! In addition to screenshots and gameplay footage of the demo itself over the rest of the summer~ ;3 So, what happens next? Well, to put it simply... early testing! The team and I will be putting out feelers for volunteer playtesters across social media. And we'll select a small group of people to play the prototype demo to offer feedback on everything from the level design to the combat mechanics and button inputs for both Keyboard and Controllers. After that, we'll use the feedback to tighten up the demo experience for the indie game showcase at Another Furry Con 2025!  I, along with three members of Team Sando will be at the convention, showing off an early-access version of the demo we intend to release to the public on Steam and Itch. More info to come on that as we close in on the date of the con.  Let me know what y'all think in the comments. And please support the official release of the demo when it comes out!

"It's a beautiful summer in Little Penglai, and Rocky's ready to have fun in the sun! Watch out for his super soaker though. That thing packs a REAL punch~!" This is the first in a line of promotional pinups titled "The Zodiac Ring Swimsuit Special"! Inspired by the iconic Marvel Swimsuit Special series that ran from 1991-1995, this is meant to promote the game with a bit of fun, cheeky, yet (mostly) wholesome fan service. The series will run concurrently with each segment of the game's development up to its final release date. In short, every Build of the game will get dedicated pieces to the Zodiac Masters and other characters in Rock E Rumble~! And all illustrations are Patreon-exclusive up until the last few months leading to a new release for the game. "It's a beautiful summer in Little Penglai, and--- Oh wow~! Looks like our superstar is feeling extra cheeky today! Hope that speedo isn't too tight on him..."  Given that this is a furry-based game with a known spicy furry artist (moi) helming the art department, I decided it would be fun to make more suggestive alts of the Swimsuit Specials for my followers and adult gamers to enjoy~! I do just wanna clarify that there won't be any sex scenes or erotic nudity in the game itself, but we still want to have fun and engage with the saucier side of our community. As for what will be in the game, let's call it "Safe enough to be considered PG-13 or T, but suggestive enough to let the 18+ crowd know we see ya~! ;3". As is the case with the safe version, a saucy version of Kiki's pinup will be released at a later time. Enjoy~!

Kenji's Best of 2024

2024 has been a crazy, hectic, and stressful year for me. I had to make some really tough decisions in the face of my imminent burnout due to my day job, the current state of politics here in the United States, and overall feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. I've been an active artist for the past ten years of my life, and for the longest time I felt like I wasn't getting to where I wanted to be.  But... seeing this collage, which is only a fraction of everything that I managed to do in the past year alone... I realize I've gotten FAR in my journey, and I should be proud of that. In this past year alone, I did the following:  -Did my first collab with an artist who does woodcut displays for gay bars and events - Got my first brand collab with Huff Aromas - Released my first real manga pages (even if that's on a hiatus for the next thing I'm doing)  - And... AND! Became an art director and character designer for an indie platformer-beat'em up hybrid game!  The me from my first year of college would be immensely proud of how far I've come. And despite all the rough shit coming our way... I don't plan on stopping. There will be more pieces to come, especially for Rock E Rumble. And also... I'll be doing more with the Shinobi Yokai and Liminal Displacement as OCs free to explore different things on the side with my friends and fellow furry artists.  Anyway, that's all for now. I'll see you all in 2025!

Hairstyles and clothing were one of the primary indicators of ethnic identity (and political allegiance) in East Asia until very recently. For the Chinese, adults could not cut their hair as per Confucian tradition, so would gather it into a topknot (while Buddhist monks shaved their heads). Therefore, to the Chinese the stereotype of the 'northern barbarian' is long, often braided hair. Mongols were distinguished by their shaved heads and looped hair behind their ears, while the Manchu were famous for the long queue from the back of their heads. During the Qing Dynasty, the Manchu hairstyle was imposed onto the Han Chinese to mark their submission to the Qing. This article here by Michael Godley (1994, published in East Asian History,) discusses some of the history of the queues and interactions of nomad and Chinese hair styles. It seems there is evidence the 12th and 13th century Jurchen of the Jin Dynasty wore their hair in a queue as well. And the Jurchen of course, are the ancestors of the Manchu.

Chin Han as Jia Sidao in Netflix's Marco Polo, with a Chinese topknot. Song Ministers would normally wear hats though, as a matter of station. Variations of this were standard up until the Qing Dynasty. As the hair was a gift from the parents, Confucian teachings indicated it could not be cut.

The Khitan hair style. The head was shaved except around the temples and ears. At the temples it's left to grow long. Depicted in many Song Dynasty paintings.

One example of the queue. There were variations (I.e, how much of the head was shaved) but this is generally along the lines of what is meant. Supposedly the medieval Jurchen wore their hair thus.

I can't find a good image at the moment, but the Tangut had their own: the top of the head was shaved, but a fringe was left arount the rest. At the temples of was grown long to frame the face. A bit like a European monk's tonsure. It's very ugly.
