i was debating on whether or not i should post this on tumblr but seeing as there haven’t been posts about this yet, here it is. i’m exposing my real location and nationality but it doesn’t matter.

if you have been active on twitter, you may already know #savemyanmar is trending. long story short, there has been a military coup. several nations have released statements but i want to share insight on what’s happening in the country.

memes about a coup have been circulating around for a couple days and when i slept at 2 am last night, we were still under the rule of the National League for Democracy (NLD). while they are not technically democratic, they are the closest we’ve got. when my mother woke up at 6 this morning, she was notified that the country was now under the rule of the military.

banks services are no longer available. wifi was cut at around 7-8. some people got wifi again earlier but many got it barely thirty minutes ago. this is bad for businesses especially ones that require international communications. additionally, international students like myself are experiencing anxiety; how do we pay for and attend classes if we’re not sure wifi is a given?

myanmar has a long, complicated history with military governments. the last time the military went into rule was in 1962 and only stopped in 2011, following the 2010 elections. there was a huge protest in 1988 lead by students that resulted in lots of death. during the military junta, resources like rice, water, oil, were scarce. the gist is military rule is bad for us.

all of my followers are not myanmar citizens, i’m sure but as part of the international community, please help us. here is a petition that you can sign (although i’m not sure if that can do much). there may be protests in front of myanmar embassies so look out for those. most of all, please help spread awareness. 

the people here are coping with dark humor, primarily in the form of memes but we don’t know how long this rule will last, even though the official statement said only a year. here’s something that pretty much sums up our coping mechanism:

He lived in the Indiana governor’s residence and then at the Vice President’s residence at the naval observatory. 26-year-old Jamarion Robinson’s grandmother Beverly Nixon said her grandson was bipolar and schizophrenic. Still got shot 76 (!!!) times. Would a white person get the same treatment?

The witness said he saw more than a dozen patrol cars at the complex where US Marshals killed Robinson on August 5, 2016. Why were there no behavioral specialist? Surely one of them would know how to interact with a bipolar schizophrenic better than the police.

Hi, everyone. I don’t know how to begin this, I don’t know how everything had come to this, but I need help. I need help, and I don’t know who else to turn to. We’re very, very indebted - like the pandemic hit us hard, Mom and I. From losing family members, to almost facing homelessness, to almost starving, to me almost failing my finals because I had a dangerous hemorrhage, to almost losing my mother to covid - we’ve seen it all, lol. It was hard, and difficult, and the worse year of my short life. We’re very behind on rent (like a year behind), and the thing is, it’s started getting better. Mom got a job. I started doing better in uni, and I was going to pay the obligatory additional courses, and was saving up for my orthodontic treatment (which is obligatory - my overbite is causing me a lot, lot of pain and essentially making my life a living hell), but the point is : we were starting to get better and leaving the nightmare that was 2020 behind us for good. (Or so it seemed.)

And then yesterday, Mom got assaulted. In front of our house. They almost killed her. She has so many bruises, and I remember opening the door to see her arm almost torn open. I can barely sleep as it is because of that. They took everything - her driving license, her grey card, her id card, her debit cards, a lot, lot of cash money that she took to pay some debts she had pilled, the insurance, a usb key that contained 13 years worth of work, important documents, her phones - her work phones, where all the work she’s been laboring over for months and months is gone, the work she was going to get paid for this week is gone (like, what the hell?), her chequier (that contains +20 blank checks, meaning they can still steal a lot more than they already did - our justice system SUCKS so I don’t see them doing anything about it), and her glasses, too. Even my late grandpa’s driving license she kept as a souvenir was stolen.

Oh, and our home’s keys. These assholes know our exact address, the exact appartement (as it’s written down on her id card) and they have the keys. We can’t even change the locks just yet because we cannot afford it, so we’re blocking the door from the inside and one of us has to stay at home when the other goes out, but imagine not being safe in your own house. Just imagine.

So that’s what has been going on. And furthermore, because of that, Mom missed a 1500$ opportunity job since she cannot make the trip. So, in short, we’re fucked, we’re facing homelessness yet again, and we don’t know what to do. We don’t even have money to buy food. And everyone’s calling on the debts Mom owes - she’s currently overdrawn in her bank account by 590$ due to bills, and it’s not even close to how much we owe as a whole. So please, I’m asking from the bottom of my heart, please help in any way you can, whether it be by reblogging, or donating even a dollar, or anything, it’ll mean a lot. The exact amount we need is gigantic so I don’t expect to reach it, but anything will help us out, really.

So I’m aware I haven’t really posted anything in a while but I hope this reaches someone. My brother’s name is Efren. Growing up he used to tease and make fun of me, but among all the teasing he also helped raise me along with our mom. When he was little he wanted to be an architect. But his is the story that a lot of Mexican American working class families face: either take the opportunities available to you to attain your dreams, or curtail those in order to take care of your family. He chose his family. After graduating high school he turned down full ride scholarships in order to stay and work to help pay the bills. It was just him, my mom, and me. After a couple of years we got stable enough economically that he was able to go to college, but after graduation we fell on hard times again and instead of finding work in his field or applying to architecture school like he always dreamed, he decided to stick around and help us again. It’s because of his choice to help our family that I was able to go to college too, something that for a time I didn’t think was possible. It’s because of him that I was able to apply to and get accepted into a PhD program in the hopes of becoming a professor. It’s because of him that my mom has a house to call her own. My mom and I owe him everything. Yesterday, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He’s uninsured. I’m a student, our mom works in childcare. There’s a high success rate for remission if he gets treatment, but we can’t afford it. He’s all me and my mom have, and we can’t lose him. He chose family growing up, and it’s my turn to choose him. Please, any donation helps. I just want him to come home.

I found an article written by a woman who pretended to be 11 year old girl online for 7 days, and it has a lot of descriptions of online sexual abuse of minors, but with the right point of view; minors cannot consent and have no agency in being sexually abused online, and it’s on adults to protect them from ever being put in the danger of becoming a target of predator. I’m going to post a link because I want all my underage followers to know how predators online talk, what they will say and demand of you, and to recognize on spot when someone is trying to sexually abuse you. If anyone has ever talked to you in this way online, if you recognize any of that behavior in someone you chat with, you should know that what they’re doing is illegal and a crime against you. You are more than allowed to shut that conversation down and block the predators, and if you can, report them. Nothing that happened in those conversations is remotely your fault, and just the fact that you were exposed to something like that means this world has failed you. Here’s the article.
