in my mind its like. his attraction to women seems really superficial in that he obviously really cares about sniper wolf and naomi as people, but the reason his romantic/sexual attraction to them seems to begin is because they express an interest in him first.

neither one actually has feelings for him (naomi didn't initially, anyway, most likely), but when he receives affection from them, it's as though he feels like he has to reciprocate. with naomi you can even see that he's uncomfortable with her advances in the cutscene (he shies away from her touching him and prevents them from kissing twice), but when she pulls him in the helicopter to have sex he submits to her anyways.

what i find most interesting with sniper wolf, meanwhile, is that nothing in the way he talks about her inherently breaches anything platonic; he believes that her kindness towards her dogs is demonstrative of her true nature, and doesn't want snake to kill her because of that. i think that's really wonderful and very telling of the kind of people the two of them are, but nothing about it is romantic, really; it's clear textually that wolf bears no such sentiment towards him, and that she is kind to him because he is sympathetic/honest/she trusts him?

regardless, what's most telling is that otacon is treated this way and almost seems to think that any sort of affection between a man and a woman translates to physical attraction. his reason for being "in love" with wolf doesn't really feel like it has any romance behind it; he obviously really cares about her, but the only thing he has to say about her, really, is that he's adamant she's a good person because she likes dogs. especially considering the obvious connection this has to snake (who has a very early-on conversation with campbell about his huskies, who he describes as being his only family), it just seems like he's bringing up something that he thinks he should be in love with her for.

he seems to chastise snake for expressing any attraction to women himself, too (off the top of my head telling him to focus up when he makes a remark on olga's beauty in mgs2 and shutting him down when he starts to think about if meryl might still like him in mgs4) (though tbf the second one is understandable LOL), and every one of his known relationships with women (whether familial or romantic) obviously ended catastrophically. and keeping in mind julie sexually assaulting him as a teenager, i think it's like. really understandable that he has such a messed up relationship with women lol
