The third movement of 6th is so iconic. Shostakovich is the king of irony and king of subtle insult. He is over the top, he reserves nothing, he said you want optimism? ILL GIVE YOU OPTIMISM. The celebration and joy is building up just like his disgust and anger, the climbing intensity to the final explosive, screaming happiness is the progress of people gradually losing their mind, giving up their sanity to the abyss of madness. Full hall of clowns and jesters dancing on burning coal to entertain the king, the tyranny, the dictator. The entire country falls into the state of euphoria, the ecstatic crowd set fire to the city, and everything burns as the cheer grows louder and louder.
HE IS THE MUSICAL GENIUS, THE MASTER OF THE MASTER.
Im losing my mind over 6, I can see the pictures, the motions, the chaos in my mind. Repeat 6th in my cell when I'm finally get admitted into the psych ward, exploding my head and mind until I can't breathe because of excitement and awe.
#shostakovich#dmitri shostakovich#average mental state of shostakovich's fan#classical music#dmitry shostakovich#HELL YEAH#i still need to listen to his 6th

Being on Xiaohongshu these past months were something tbh
Because of XHS I found so much cool stuff about Shostakovich like fanart, merch of him, cool anecdotes, etc and because of it I’ve started calling Shostakovich “Lao Xiao” (what people on the app nicknamed him as) and I will probably call him that for a while
#i love how every language seems to have a nickname for shostakovich#shostakovich fans' affectionate diminutive game is unlike any other composer's community i've ever seen#he deserves an award for that i think#shostakovich#шостакович#xiaohongshu#rednote#小红书#dmitri shostakovich

I so want to write a whole in-depth musical analysis of Antiformalist Rayok. There's so much I want to take apart, and it's genuinely brilliant in how it uses musical language to poke fun at the musical censorship he was subjected to. I want to talk about it so much, and it always feels like there's still so many layers I'm yet to know. I worry that I won't be able to do it justice, but I want to try.

I have been thinking about Shostakovich's 5 recently, and I would like to think it as a requiem as well. Not a specifically themed one, but i would like to believe S has the idea when he wrote it. Under the circumstances like that, it's very likely for him to think this might be his last piece, so when he's mourning the dead in 3rd mvt with traditional Russian hymn, he's praying for himself as well. He's using his last chance to speak for the people who are suffering, to speak of the pain and repression his people are under, the death of a great nation and a future that's gone.
That's why he's brave, he is a shy and anxious person but he's definitely no crowd. Even in his (presumed) last moment, he didn't give up fighting, didn’t give up protesting against cruelty and tyranny. His own existence will always be the last when the people, the society and the belief he loves and stands for are in the line.
He's one of the greatest people who have lived.

i’ve never returned to good omens after it broke my heart (still upset about the s2 ending) and i’m 99% sure the story itself is fucked beyond repair after everything that happened (won’t get into it here but it genuinely sickens me) but i still think about it a lot. and i keep thinking about the one specific record that Aziraphale forgave eight months’(?) rent for… the record in question being Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.
i’ve been a huge fan of shostakovich since before I got into good omens, and i was a huge fan of good omens before they even made that connection. holy shit you could not imagine my excitement. maybe one of these days i will post an insane in-depth rambling about the achingly relevant connections between the story of good omens and the symphony, because it drives me absolutely insane that one of my FAVOURITE SHOWS made not only a REFERENCE, BUT A GENUINELY RELEVANT THEMATIC CONNECTION to MY FAVOURITE COMPOSER OF ALL TIME, ONLY FOR THE STORY’S FINALE AND THE STORY ITSELF TO GO IN THE WORST DIRECTION POSSIBLE, AND THAT’S MERELY SALT ON THE WOUND BECAUSE IT TURNED OUT THE SURVIVING AUTHOR IS, ONCE AGAIN, A HORRIBLE PERSON. I CAN’T EVEN SAY IT’S GONE STRAIGHT TO HELL. NO. THE AUTHOR’S GOING TO HELL, AND THE STORY’S GOING TO s u p e r h e a v e n . Look, I know the tragedy of the ending is still relevant to the main themes and conflicts of the story but AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGHHYH
I just, God, I’m so conflicted. I still love the show. But I hate all this. But I still NEED to go into the parallels. the PARALLELS, MAN. i do love Crowley and Aziraphale, and i love Aziraphale so much… and the Shostakovich parallels… the Shostakovich parallels… why’d it all go so wrong… that could have been so incredible… the parallels, man… the fucking parallels of systematic corruption and rebellion that drew me to the story in the first place… one of these days you will hear it all. i will need time to write my analysis. but as a guy who’s both a huge fan of Shostakovich AND Good Omens, I’ve only really seen “analysis of the record from a Good Omens pov (idk much about Shostakovich)” and “analysis of the record from a Shostakovich point of view (idk much about Good Omens)” and it makes me really happy to see people discussing it from either side, so i’m going to have to write this, for the people, if not some form of therapeutic closure for my tortured gay ass nerd brain. the parallels, man. they haunt me.
#fulfilling my tumblr duties by always going at least slightly mad on the shostakovich sideblog#hey thevw if you’re reading this i assume you share my pain#the time will come.#shostposting#shostakovich#dmitri shostakovich#dmitry shostakovich#good omens#good omens s2#good omens season 2#fuck neil gaiman#angry gay man gets upset about the funnie angle and deval show#hhhhh#i have Feelings and Opinions

So apparently I’ve been spelling Zhdanovshchina wrong this entire time
First I thought Zhdanov was Zhandov, that’s mistake no. 1. But then I found out later so it’s fine
BUT I thought that “Zhdanovshchina” was spelled “Zhdanovschina” for a while and I mentioned it in my history paper. But checking back, I misspelled that god forsaken word THE ENTIRE PAPER. Why can’t I have figured that out until after it’s already summer. Fuck my stupid baka life

back when I was on reddit more often, I was sort of a microcelebrity for infodumping about shostakovich everywhere. which was fun because I'd get insane DMs like this
(they actually did send me pictures of the signed score. it was cool!)
