Friendships that Shaped My Senior High School Experience: A Reflective Essay

High school is often considered the most memorable phase in a student’s life. It is believed to be a time when strong friendships and connections are forged, and where one can truly embrace their youth alongside loved ones and friends. Personally, I view high school as the beginning of my journey, and I would like to share this sentiment with all of you today.

Hi, I’m Shania Fatima R. Azares, a senior high school student studying at Perpetual Help College Manila. I hail from Masbate, where I spent my childhood and completed my junior high school education. However, I moved to Manila to pursue a better quality of education, leaving behind everything I knew. I started my senior high school journey at La Consolacion College Manila. Adapting to the new school and making new friends was a challenge. I was surrounded by students from different backgrounds and cultures, each with their own unique stories and experiences. However, I quickly realized that we were all united by a common goal – to learn and grow together.

As I settled into my new surroundings, I found myself growing more at ease and truly enjoying my first year of senior high school. The friendships I formed were incredibly supportive, allowing me to let go of my usual shyness and introversion. With them, I could be as childish as I wanted, and they matched my energy perfectly. Despite my personal dislike for math, studying with them brought a smile to my face as I tackled equations that used to be a source of frustration. Even in the midst of online classes, we always found ways to have fun, often competing to see who could participate in the most recitations. Our enthusiasm during these sessions earned us praise, and it was through this simple joy of learning together that our bond grew stronger. We proved that our friendship extended beyond just the good times; we were there for each other during difficult moments, offering support and guidance. We respected each other's choices, set boundaries, and ensured that no friend made impulsive decisions they would later regret. We were always just a phone call away, making our friendship truly invaluable.

Regrettably, I had to transfer once more due to personal and financial issues. It was a devastating experience for me. Although I am not one to become emotional when faced with separation, the fact that I believed my life was finally improving only to be met with numerous challenges left me feeling disheartened. I had always been under the impression that high school was a time for fun and games, but as I soon discovered, it was the beginning of a tumultuous journey. My first year in senior high school was a blissful and carefree experience, but it was short-lived. It felt as though I had just begun to savor the sweetness of life when it was snatched away from me in the blink of an eye.

Despite the challenging circumstances, I concealed my exhaustion during my second year of senior high school by wearing a cheerful facade. As an irregular student, I had to attend classes with Grade 11 students in the morning and then join my own grade in the afternoon. This juggling act proved to be physically and emotionally draining. Throughout the day, I maintained a smiling demeanor, but no one truly understood the weariness I felt. Consequently, I distanced myself from those who sought closeness, as I had been deeply affected by past experiences. The fear of forming connections and eventually parting ways overwhelmed me, causing me to overlook their genuine intentions.

I am still filled with fear, but I am grateful for the friends I have chosen this second year. They have shown me that I can still have a great time in senior high school. They have helped me adapt to the new environment and navigate the school's educational system. Despite the challenges of being an irregular student, they have made it an enjoyable experience so far.

After reflecting, I came to the realization that I have a strong support system. My best friend has been by my side for nine years, I made friends in my first year of senior high school, and I have new friends in my second year. Despite any challenges I may face, I am not alone. My take is that, I should cherish my time in senior high school and remain optimistic about my future. There are still many people to meet and places to explore for my personal growth.

Achievements

Let's talk about achievements. Usually, it is my mother who posts my achievements and credentials in social media. Today, I will take the opportunity to discuss my accomplishments.

I received my first writing certificate in nursery school and was first honored in 3rd grade. Since then, I have consistently been in the top 10 of my class and graduated from Maihao Elementary School with high honors. In 7th grade, I was the second highest in my batch, but the pandemic disrupted my studies. Despite this setback, I still managed to maintain above 90 percent averages and graduated from Western Masbate Roosevelt High School with high honors. During my first year at La Consolacion College Manila, I made the honors list and now, as a 12th grader at Perpetual Help College of Manila, I am working hard to maintain my position on the honors list and hopefully continue this achievement throughout college.

In 2021, I had the opportunity to become an altar server at St. Isidro Parish Church. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I was determined to join the sacristan formation and through God's will, I was able to fulfill this role. Regrettably, I had to step down from my duties. However, upon enrolling at LCCM, I became a commentator at their school's chapel, serving under the Augustinian Youth Organization for a duration of one year.

My entire journey has been shaped by the presence of God, who has guided me every step of the way. I am forever grateful to Him for the blessings in my life.

Hobbies and Interests
