“Sleeping Ute” is the name of a mountain. There’s a Ute Indian legend that is based on the appearance of a mountain which, apparently, looks like a warrior lying on his back with his arms folded on his chest. The legend is that a mythical warrior fell asleep while recovering from battle wounds and is now immortalized as a form in the landscape. In the summer, he covers himself in a green coat, and in the winter he covers himself in a white coat. I came across that story after visiting Chaco Canyon in New Mexico and reading up a bit on Anasazi history and ancient road systems in the southwest.

The song’s not about the Sleeping Ute mountain itself. This song is about restlessness and escape dreams, and the desire to disappear into a landscape. I’ve spent a lot of my life in a transitory state of one kind or another, rarely committing to a single home or sense of place. The “north road” is the Great North Road which was an ancient Anasazi pathway that ran through a large section of the southwest and passed by Sleeping Ute Mountain. In my mind it’s the road and the landscape that’s “dressed gold and green.”
