MURDER, SHE WROTE PROMPTS * assorted dialogue from the television show
suppose you tell me what happened here last night.
i'm looking for motive.
back home, we have a saying. flowers that bloom too quickly are fair game for a late frost.
i don't want to alarm you, but something very sinister is going on here.
all right. we come to an understanding, or one of us doesn't leave here alive.
there are three things you can never have enough of in life: chocolate, friends, and the theatre.
a good guest is like halley's comet. seen and enjoyed seldom and briefly.
you can never nudge the moral compass far from its true north without losing something vital.
i've gotta talk to you.
half the country had reason to kill him.
they do say a new experience broadens the mind.
it's a job requirement.
lie down, dear. lie down. it's a dream, that's all.
that is a marvelously interesting recipe.
send me a copy of the book when it's finished?
you always do, don't you?
you must do quite well.
it's hard to know yourself.
were we ever that innocent?
uh, there's just one slight problem.
there will be two house seats waiting for you the next time you're in town.
in our business... you never know.
i was bored out of my mind.
you are trouble.
now you wait right here.
would you do me the honor of dining with me this evening?
time for you to get back to work.
out for some early morning air?
it's hard to know yourself, let alone another person.
not funny, friend.
funny thing about having your name in lights. when the power fails, you learn a lot about yourself and your "friends."
three more paragraphs and i can go to bed.
the party tonight? we're coming as our favorite fictional character.
i doubt that any of us despised him enough to kill him.
that's what you're all thinking, isn't it?
what's wrong with this phone?
who ever heard of framing someone with the wrong gun?
at least... i don't think i did.
well, how about a toast for later?
how soon can you get down here?
i don't know. i haven't made up my mind yet.
is that you?
look, it's an interesting puzzle. i'll give it a try.
i've got the name of a very good lawyer.
they've told me absolutely nothing about you.
i'm so sorry. i should have told you.
you haven't got a thing to wear.
you have my word on it.
i do believe you're offering me a job.
don't you go to the movies?
you've been seeing too many stephen king movies.
rudeness does not become you.
people do seem to enjoy it.
just as i suspected. when under stress, the english always head for the teapot.
i'm not used to being refused.
i haven't read any of them.
permit me the pleasure of educating you.
television is your business, not mine.
i don't usually give advice, but in this case, i say... go for it.
you must be a real book lover!
how good of you to come.
is there anything else you need?
they asked if maybe you wouldn't mind bending the truth just a little.
yeah, that's nice... but no thanks.
hey, isn't that something.
that isn't what i meant at all.
there's not much to tell.
now i may be wrong... but frankly, i doubt it.
we didn't have much in common.
i'm sorry honey, but we're just dying in here.
help is on the way!
i can be very persuasive.
how about a pair of pants?
i sure know how to pick 'em, don't i?
how could i refuse?
why don't you take some advice?
i haven't eaten a thing since breakfast.
slander can be an expensive indulgence.

Sarah hadn't quite heard the contents of their official orientation, but something in the words, a crackling and shifting of the very air around them, had, in turn, stirred something deep within her. Like a song out of tune, a beat without its time, this too was somehow misplaced in the world that was gradually unravelling around her.
If they weren't actually who she conceived them to be, that the 'Doppelgänger' was presenting the truth, this would demand an awareness of the reality of possibility that instead of surmising Wake was consumed by the dark, twisted as a result of this force, he was still out there, still alive somehow. Breaker witnessed such things firsthand, that much she was prepared to believe.
It was a brief but palpable relief, transiently lost upon the more profound reflection of sequenced thought; if this was also true, the Dark Presence was not precisely without form; instead, it managed to emulate the Writer in terrible, unimaginable ways. Not exactly mindless in its vision, she still needed to have all the pieces before being sure.
"You know, the claims of Wake running around town, murdering people -elbow patches and all- didn't make that much sense to me, either. You seem pretty capable yourself, Mr.Doppelgänger. What is it that you get out of all of this? Why go through such trouble convincing decent folks you're someone you're not?"
@shxrxffbrxkr || cont. from here
❝Oh, did she finally move on!? That’s great news!❞ Even if he did want to play a bit more with her, up-close and all. Scratch cackles at the mental image of distraught Wake, after his entire reason to go on has vanished. He’ll cherish that moment. ❝Oh, he’s gonna love this...❞ The Herald mutters quietly to himself, still largely amused even if not caring if anyone hears him. Especially Sarah.
Now, Sarah... Mr. Scratch did have to deal with her. He focuses his attention back at the sheriff and studies her for a split second, imagining how easy it would be to tear her apart. Bit by bloody bit, his shadows would have her in pieces. However, now wasn’t the time for fantasizing. He should use his silver tongue rather. She asked and he shall answer.
Well, best that he can...
❝A twin? Don’t make it goofy... This isn’t a soap opera, and really that’s not even my style. I’d come up with a better lie, would I have to.❞ Scratch leans back, making a point to grimace in distaste. He shakes his head, as if trying to rid himself of the bad taste. ❝My name, well... They call me M̢̞̳̿͑ͦ̔r̻̞̲̍̊̀.͕̪̫̯̬ͯͨ̏̇͡ ̰͔̠͉̑́S̠̲̲̐̋̾͟ċ̜̩̖̣̞ͥ͛̔͘ṛ͕͔͚̳̊̾̚͟ͅạ̡̲͗t͓̟̳̺͓̫̩̋̏͂̊͘ç̟̳͍̜͇̥̾ͯ̓h̗͍̩̬̆̽͜.❞ The Herald allows for the corrupted noise to roll off his tongue. Allows for it to sink in with terror, because obviously it should. ❝And I am Alan Wake’s doppelgänger.❞

Right, she didn’t believe him. Too bad. The Herald wanted autonomy, and this is what he’s met with freshly out the hellhole. Sad how that works out, Sarah was fun to toy with but Scratch had no interest in proving her wrong. He chuckles, more so chokes on the sound, trying not to.
❝Sorry, my bad. I just can’t believe how bullheaded you are.❞ He shakes his head, straightening up and taking an indifferent step towards the officer. ❝Now… Alice. How is she? Have you been close? Or did her pathetic yapping about dear old Alan make you turn away despite the pity?❞
The Herald slouches, uncaring in her display of authority and trying his best to seem nonchalant. More so than he was. ❝I’d love to see Alice. We have a lot to discuss.❞
He couldn’t wait to play the traumatized husband, snapping lighter, raising his voice a little higher, rougher than she’s used to. If Sarah is volunteering to set it up for him, he’s more than glad to accept it. Especially since despite all she saw, the sheriff was not paying attention or listening to reason. Apparently, doubles were too much to account for…
He takes one step forward, but she refuses to budge, refuses to be intimidated by Wake no matter what or who he thinks he is.
Most would have just shot before Wake had the chance to speak, to defy their direct orders without an ounce of concern or hesitation. Sarah, on the other hand, was indeed bullheaded in caring as much as she did about the writer, a bad habit her father would have chastised her for in the past, but he wasn’t here to make the call anymore.
“Yeah, but it doesn’t work out quite like that. See, if you want to talk to your wife from now on, you’ll have to talk through me and your lawyers. She’s told me she’s seen you in places and then swears to me that you’re still out there, that she’s not going crazy. Then suddenly, you show up, no worse for wear and like nothing happened years after that. Do you realize the amount of psychological stress she’s being put under? What the hell is wrong with you, Wake?”
Wrong was the opportune word. Everything about this just felt wrong. Aside from his own removal of association, was Alan too removed from reality and self-awareness?
The stress, trauma, and medical afflictions in his life were all perfectly reasonable causes for a mental break, homicides also couldn’t be ruled out. The only thing that remained was that of The Dark Presence.
It was undoubtedly a theory, but it couldn’t possibly hold water. Nightingale, other deputies, and members of her town all would carry the same fate as those ‘taken’ but assuming Wake was one of them, how could he muster some form of intelligible conversation when his kin would be more partial to carrying something a lot more dangerous and with a lot less reception. Things didn’t add up, and something itched in the back of her mind, compelling her to at least see how far she could go with this.
“Ok, assuming I haven’t understood everything correctly until now, I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt here. Fill in the blanks for me, and please give me one last opportunity to help you. You act and speak as if you’re not Alan, referring to him as if he’s a separate person altogether. If you’re not Alan, then who are you? A twin? What is your real name?”

❝Aw, babe, I’d never dream of hurting your feelings– the rest of you, sure. You sure love to get on my back… or I suppose, Al’s back. Do you believe that coward would be capable of even swatting a fly?❞ Scratch wasn’t acting timid, or coy, however– he was agitated. Sarah Breaker had been a constant blockage in his path. As an assistance to Wake or as an opposing force. The writer needed to write, not make new friends.
Now, what was he to do with this old boldness in the sheriff? She was reaching for her gun, and he can read her face enough to guess what she’s reasoning for. If she pulls it out, it’s a mess. He hates to clean up messes, despite all… so this will have to be as is. Even if The Herald’s preference was for the usual pliancy of a weak mind.
Maybe he can call her bluff? Easily intimidate? Worth a shot.
❝I wouldn’t do that, if I were you. You’ll just waste your bullets.❞ That was true. Without light, it was near impossible to cause him damage.
Wait– was he really referring to himself in the first person? She was afraid of that but not of him. Not really. More challenging to deal with the fact that she would have to shoot a friend over all of this. Though, they all saw it coming; Barry, Alice..The stresses that came with them from New York, Alan losing his wife in the lake (believed drowned) tangible dark forces that were once people, corrupted by the darkness somehow..She would have never been inclined to believe him if she didn’t first see it for herself.
Her instincts would have thought that was the novel event that started this whole dilemma in the first place.
“Now now, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t have both feet planted squarely on and up your ass, Wake. After all, it’s unfair treatment, treating you more favourably than the garden variety assholes I put in a cage? You look like you could use one. Didn’t think I would have to arrest you for multiple homicides either, different career paths?”
She would indeed do that and against his instruction( like that would have stopped her) training it straight and between his eyes with no intention of missing.
Sarah chuckled contemptuously,
“Now I would agree with you on that myself, but you still have time to cooperate and tell me your side of the story. I’m sure if anyone wants to hear it more than me, it’s your wife.”

Starter for @lights-champion
Sheriff Sarah Breaker didn't expect what was waiting for her on the other side of that call that night, but she inclined that it was anything but routine, something that required a more expert handle on the situation.
According to dispatch, the man sounded panicked, maybe unhinged. More than enough reason to be particularly cautious. Her concern rested with the station's owner, Carl Stucky. His business brought in tourists from outside of town and beyond, people of all types, not always the good either. People who would have liked to take advantage of the man's good nature.
It was all the more reason she felt another surge of urgency, turning the corner and closing in fast on the gas station. Strobing red and blue lights and a siren that blared authoritatively into the night.
Upon arrival, Sarah mentally prepared herself for what she was about to witness and carefully exited the vehicle with a steady hand hovering close and over her revolver.
"Sheriff Sarah Breaker"
She announced herself promptly and viewed the man as he emerged from inside the gas station. He was alone, injured and clearly confused.
Where was Carl in all of this?
As she gradually approached, it soon became apparent that this 'Alan' wasn't a threat at all, but more so an unfortunate individual caught in something that was seemingly beyond himself.
The look in his eyes made her feel suddenly unsettled,
"Calm down, Mr. Wake.. You look like you've taken a pretty bad knock to the head. Are you okay?"

@malonox Continued ━ ━ ❝Oh... It’s not my job to convince you, Breaker Jr., but I’m sure your pops will be proud of little ol’ you keeping vigilante around creatives. Don’t you think?❞ He smiles, polite.
❝Now tell me, why would daddy’s little girl be out here this late wanting to talk to a writer? Doubles aside, it’s a little suspicious to poor Alice isn’t it? You wouldn’t want to hurt her feelings?❞ He inches closer. ❝Unless all that care was only just for show, hm?❞
Breaker Junior?
Sarah had heard some interesting names hurled her way in her time as sheriff, but this one had entertained the woman more so than any other. Wake had some sense of humour, she’d give him that. (albeit dry at times) Nevertheless, she knew better than to indulge in it.
He knew how to touch a nerve too.
“Wrong, Wake. You have a lot to answer for, to your wife but most importantly to me. The minute you show up, this town goes to hell. I’m getting people claiming that you’re responsible for disappearances. Murders? And what’s with the getup? Got somewhere important to be at this hour? Don’t lie or you’ll hurt my feelings.”

Keeping the light on him, the closer he came, the closer her hand inched to her piece sitting cold and solid on her belt. The wild look in his eyes, almost unhinged, was something Breaker wasn’t used to seeing, even with most frequent fliers.
The big cities always had a bad habit of churning out the worst of people, letting them loose on poor and unsuspecting towns.
If it was true and Wake had snapped, he left her little choice.

Cont. malonox
❝Oh really?❞ Scratch glares at the sheriff in front of him. Darkness envelopes the room, slowly but surely. ❝Frank's little girl wants to be the hero just like daddy-- pathetic.❞ The Herald lunges forward at the woman, ready to rip her throat out if need be.
There was a momentary tug to the brain, a realization of prior events leading up to Nightingale and the rest that fell victim to the unseen, dark forces that waited on the fringes of the light.
Of course, they were vulnerable to the light; it was as Wake had said. At first, she doubted what he said, like a seasoned officer conditioned to the forces of circumstance. However, Wake was an exception, somehow managing to cope with everything thrown at him, thrown quite literally into his path. He was a desperate man, desperately trying to find his wife regardless of what he had to do to achieve it. He handled it better than she could..
"That's funny, coming from someone who wants to mimic a dorky writer. Who are you trying to impress?"
This version of Alan, however, was utterly wrong. They wore his face and voice, but they were someone different altogether. A chaotic hysteria took the place of logic, a feral animal that had just run out of options and given no choice but to do anything, anything to preserve itself.
Darkness began to bleed inside the room and around her ankles, threatening to swallow her just like the others. This figure had something to do with all of this.
This realization, unfortunately, would not come soon enough before she had no choice but to throw herself out of the way of the other, firing off a wayward shot that landed nowhere.
If she could reach for her torch, somehow still fastened to the side of her belt, she could have a better chance of at least getting herself into the open.
