spread creation development
I began editing my photos using Lightroom. I experimented with masking the face and background and editing the colours to make them brighter. I had the idea of making the background a gradient of different colours and I realised I still had my digital drawing experiments from my intitial ideas when my project was going to be ‘AURA’. I used photoshop to insert that into the background whilst also toggling with the blending options and reducing its model out.

photoshoot!
These are the final pictures I selected out of the 600 we took! I had to be very decisive as there were a lot of successful outcomes but they are all very large files. The photoshoot was so much fun and the collaboration aspect was such a success as we both were able to share ideas to get the most we could out pf the time slot. We experimented with green and pink gel lights and how those looked reflected in different directions. I like the contrast of light and dark that is present in lots of the pictures. We had the idea towards the end of using water to wet the models hair and we thought it looked effective dripping on her shoulders/chest too.

planning my photoshoot!
Although I’m not a makeup artist, I still wanted to have a vision ofr how the makeup would look. I wanted to do a green eyeshadow look that would contrast the pink lips. We had already used blue and orange in the test shoot too so I wanted to trysomething new so that I had variation incase I did want to use some pictures from my test shoot. I bared in mind the natural features of my model and also consideration to my chosen article so that it reflected the text appropriatley so everything was cohesive.
These pictyures were my sources of inspiration for the final photo shoot. I had a discussion with the photgrapher and showed her these pictures for reference beforehand. They showcase different loghting etchniques I want to capture and also the angles and the positioning of the face from the camera. She adviced that we could use gel lights to achieve th erefelctiev lighting look and also a spotlight on the face.

experimentation
I experimented with my logo overlaying one of my photos. I thought this photo would work well as a potential cover. I played with the opacity of the text as well as different colours. I was trying to see whether harmonious colours or contrasting colours look best.

a different style fo editing experimentation and ai expanding
I wanted to be bolder with my editing style and really play into the colours. I experimented with the colour hue settings more, I ended up creating a white contrast which I think brought out the colours even more. I used generative fill on photoshop to expand the photo so that there was an outline of her head and it wasn’t as zoomed in. This gave me more freedom when it came to creating compositions as I could use the space all around her head.

test shoot!
(21/5/24) I conducted a test photoshoot in preparation for the main shoot on Friday!  This was extremely helpful in experimenting and making mistakes before the main shoot as the photo shoot is quite last minute so I wanted to make sure I would be as prepared as possible. My housemate Izzy (Fashion Branding and Communication student) was able to book out the studio that is available to those on her course and my housemate Anna also volunteered to help/model! We wanted to have the chance to be experimental without the added pressure of it being the final shoot.
We set up a white backdrop and used Profoto lighting and a Canon 5D camera with a 24-70 mm lense which we hired from Siso. The equipment allowed the photos to be of a professional quality. We collaborated with ideas on different makeup and hair styles. I provided a moodboard containing makeup colour inspiration as well as poses. I directed the shoot to try and get as many outcomes as possible in the timeslot we had.
Overall, this shoot was a success !

illustration experimentation in response to research
I experimented with creating my own drawings in a similar style. I enjoyed this style as it felt as though I coulddraw feeling with less concern for rules. I utilised different layers to enable me to be messy with fill colours underneath and then defy black line borders over the top. Some of these I spent longer on than others; I found they turned out better when I thought less about what I was doing and let the pen draw freely creating what looked close to a continuous line drawing.

primary/secondary research - illustrator
I dug deeper to find out the illustrator behind these deisgns; her name is Jacky Marshall (also known as Jacky blue). Jacky is an illustrator and designer who is well-known in the fashion industry for her ability to turn simple lines into striking silhouettes and her use of colour. Jacky shows us that detail isn’t everything through thick brush strokes and bursts of colours that constitute to her quirky and cheerful aesthetic. I would like to experiment with incorporating this style in to my own illustrations. I think it is something that compliments the concept of my essay and given the abstract lines and lack of confinement there is opportunity for the illustrations to interact with the photos. I am glad that I stumbled into this artist and I am excited to begin an exploration of illustration styles.

magazine logo creation / development
I experimented with font manipulation to create a logo for my newfound name of my magazine. I chose the font ‘Eurostile Extended Black’ as it looked bold yet the san serif and thicker weight made me think of different ways I could exaggerate and use the shapes to my advantage. I blacked out letters, extended them, I joined the tails of ‘E’ and ‘A’ for a more contemporary look. I also edited some of the letters with a dripping shape effect as I thought it linked to the liquids used in makeup applications.

establishing target audience - responding to tims feedback
To get a better understaning of who my magazine was trying to appeal to, I made a moodboard. This allowed me to think about this more in depth as I had ot think about what photos I could use to represent different aspects of them.
My target audience is 17-27 as I feel I know a younger audience better and therefore can anticipate what this age range would want out of an indie magazine. This age range also allows for a larger readership and therefore inclusive nature. Students were a big demograhic that sprung to mind particularly those doing creative courses or those who engage in creative hobbies. They would have an interest in makeup and beauty, I do feel my audience would be predomninatley female but I want it to be open to any gender, as the modern makeup/beauty sector is becoming less and less gendered. My target audience would be someone who actively uses social media and is up to date with current trends etc.
