Reflections of Dauphin County

The birds on the telephone wires, 

I wonder how they got here and at what time, 

My car scares them off as I exit the interstate back to an old town, an old home, 

Dauphin County.

If Americana could last, 

Much like a film about going home for the holidays, 

I wonder, 

I showered this morning and got out of bed, 

I felt heavy, 

Not in Dauphin County, 

Yet, 

I was leaving my house in New York, 

I watched the children as they played basketball and talked about Charles Barkley’s game last night. 

I wonder how many boards he got. 

JFK was heavy with traffic and all I could, to pass the time was, think about the snow on the ground and how my parents hair grew whiter every passing year I went back home for the holidays,

This time it would be different,

Now it seems like every year it’s become tradition to visit the cemetery with thick sheets of snow covering the ground. 

If the plane had more room I’d have slept, 

If the plane had more, I’d have leapt, 

I dislike going back, 

As most of my childhood neighbors do as well, 

Some of us come as far as California,

I can see it now, 

The Scwhinns parked on the sidewalks watching the Steelers on TV or maybe the Sixers,

It’s all a distant past,

My reflections of Dauphin County. 

I watch summerset on pure suburban nirvana, 

The hope of smelling apple pie stains the air, 

Time I will never get back from seeing my babysitters breasts and stealing a car. 

I wonder if any of it was worth it, 

My memories of Dauphin County. 

And I roam the night streets thinking things would be different, 

But here we are, 

On a plane again to remember Dauphin County. 

Where the tinge of lemonade impregnates the air with zest,

Where the bicycles have baseball cards on their wheels and no one knows Who or what a Monet is, 

A three mile island behind the Harrisburg Airport which nearly housed the biggest nuclear meltdown in the world and the first partial melting down of a reactor in US History, 

We were a stop for Carter, 

And one for this Charter, 

But today I reflect on Dauphin County, 

Because today I lay you down in the earth of Dauphin County, 

It was only yesterday you asked me to come inside, 

It was only yesterday I would hide and wait for your car to come through the drive,

It was only yesterday I heard back from the MET and you let me know how you felt about me moving to New York, 

Only yesterday was six years ago, 

I silently hid every year on a flight to visit for two hours a grave you would visit everyday until the sun set. 

I am sorry for not calling, 

And telling you about my reflections of Dauphin County.

1987年、ヤマハは8耐本格ファクトリー参戦3年目で初優勝を飾った。#21 SHISEIDO TECH21 レーシングチームのマーチン・ウイマー/ケビン・マギー組が終盤の逆転劇で優勝したのだ。しかし、TECH21の代名詞である平忠彦の姿は表彰台にはなかった。怪我で出走できず監督として参加していたからだ。

この年、平は昨年の世界選手権GP250からGP500を主戦場としており、国内レースには参戦していなかった。鈴鹿8耐の前哨戦である6月の鈴鹿200kmレースも含め… しかしトピックがあった。ヤマハは鈴鹿200kmレースに片持ちリアアームを採用したファクトリーマシン「YZF750」を投入し、マギーに託した。ピットイン・給油もある34周のこのセミ耐久でマギーは健闘し、後続に大差をつけてトップフィニッシュ。8耐に照準を合わせる精力的なヤマハチームの姿勢を示した。

準備万端に見えたヤマハだったが、8耐前週のフランスGPで平が負傷というバッドニュースが舞い込んできた。ウィークの木曜日に練習走行を走って様子をみたが、首の状態は風圧に耐えられるものではなくライダーとしての出場を断念し、監督としてピットを守った。ピンチヒッターは、平と同じマールボロチームで前年GP250走り、気心知れたウイマーが選ばれ、マギーとのペアで出場することになった。

迎えた決勝。トップを走るワイン・ガードナー/ドミニク・サロン組（ホンダ）が転倒リタイア。これでギャリー・グッドフェロー/高吉克朗組（スズキ）がトップに立ち、#21 SHISEIDO TECH21 レーシングチームが追い上げる展開となった。マギーの強烈なブレーキングで、熱膨張したパッドがキャリパーから離れずタイヤ交換に手間取る場面もあったが諦めることはなかった。暗闇が迫る頃、チームは大胆な作戦に出る。ライバルとのギャップを鑑み、ウイマーに代わり、マギーがタイヤ交換なしで連続して走行する作戦をとる。

残り45分でトップとの差は約20秒。マギーはトップより0.5〜1秒ほど速かったが、逆転するためには微妙な残り時間だった。ラスト10分、2台の差は10〜11秒差。当然のようにトップを走る高吉へのサインは「↑」（タイムをあげろ！）という内容のものだった。そしてラスト5分、198周目の第2コーナーでアクシデントが起こる。周回遅れをかわそうとした高吉が転倒したのだ。その脇をマギーが通り過ぎていきチェッカー。ヤマハがラスト5分の逆転でついに8耐初優勝を飾ったのだ。

チームのピットとヤマハファンは熱狂的に沸いたが、転倒後に復帰し2位でゴールした高吉に対して、この日一番の声援がおくられた。さらに歓喜の表彰台に平の姿がないことで、ファンの胸中にはどこか満たされないものが存在していた。そして平が優勝トロフィーを掲げる姿を見たいという欲求がさらに膨らんでいくこととなる。
