It’s been a while since I posted an Official Therapist Post. But I got struck with an idea, so let’s do a quick PSA!

Be careful not to anthropomorphize your Pokémon friends and their expressions!

“But Vanilla, aren’t many Pokémon highly intelligent and capable of understanding humans just fine?”

Yes! But intelligence similar to humans doesn’t mean behavior similar to humans. Your Lucario probably is quite smart! That doesn’t remove their need to hone their spikes, something that humans don’t need to do. Just because they might “know better” than to do something logically, doesn’t mean there’s not other factors influencing them!

On a similar note… Pokémon have evolved for different forms of communication than us. Many have adapted to communicate with humans more easily! But not all! Your Passimian or Oranguru friend will more than likely take smiling as a threat display—and use smiling in that same way, whereas a Chimchar more familiar with humans might not! Know your Pokémon friends’ species-typical signs of discomfort, contentment, and more to be the best friend possible!
