RWBY Fighting Styles: Ruby Rose
So, as you might have guessed from the title, I am a big fan of the show RWBY by Rooster Teeth. This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, so let’s dive on in! Warning, there will be MASSIVE SPOILERS for season 3. These will probably be a series of posts, as doing them all at once would take hours.
Let’s start with Ruby. Her self made weapon is a High-Caliber Sniper Scythe called Crescent Rose.
It’s easily one of the biggest weapons on the show, and it’s also one of the coolest.
Now, before I go further into this, I am looking at their weapons and fighting styles from a semi-realistic point of view. Physics are sketchy at best in this show, so I won’t go into how even picking up this thing would be extremely difficult, much less swinging it. Although I will try to find real world equivalents to the fighting styles. If there is one.
Okay, back to Ruby. She actually uses this weapon with surprising efficiency, mowing down rows of enemies near effortlessly. Take a look at this:
As you can see, Ruby hits incredibly hard and fast, most of her strikes are fatal. She uses her Semblance (RWBY’s equivalent of superpowers) which is Speed, to further boost her momentum. She also uses the sniper rifle part of the weapon to add even more kick.
I don’t think I need to mention how devastating this combination is. A scythe is an excellent cutting tool, and once you get enough momentum behind it, your only option is to dodge it, because trying to block a strike like that is going to either leave you with broken bones or a severed torso. In all, Ruby made the perfect weapon for herself.
However, there is a downside to this. Because all of the weight is on one side, scythes are horrible unbalanced. Until you get the thing moving, you’re a sitting duck, and you can’t respond to close quarters attacks because of the length of the shaft.
This is clearly demonstrated in the Neo and Roman fight in the Finale.
Using her blinding speed, Ruby is keeping Neo firmly on the defensive, and as I mentioned early, Neo can only dodge here.
However, as soon as Ruby stops moving and plants her scythe in the ground…
She is soon knocked away and can’t react in time. For the remainder of this fight, she never regains the same speed or upper hand because her opponents are are all over her, and she can’t move her scythe in the short bursts she would need to to block their attacks. The reason for this is that she probably designed her weapons solely for fighting Grimm, the monsters that inhabit the world of RWBY. Fighting people is a completely different ball game.
So, to some up, Ruby is a Lighting Bruiser who excels when fighting monsters, but struggles against skilled humans in close quarters combat.
She’s still awesome though.

Ok so why is Blake the one comforting Ruby? Shouldn't it be like I don't know HER BEST FIRED AND PARTNER? Weiss and Ruby didn't have much interaction this volume and this is a missed opportunity to fix that. Blake is the last one to comfort Ruby they had zero interactions for the past 4 volumes and it was never established that they were close! (Ship it or not)It makes much more sense for Weiss to be the one comforting Ruby she's her partner and a good friend (*cough*/potential girlfriend *cough*)
