If only it worked that way. No matter how far he ran, though, chaos and trouble still seemed to find him.

Which, speaking of…

“Heartless?” he echoed.

Monsters that steal hearts….

Perhaps it was nothing but their uncanny similarity to his usual ‘friends’, but the description left him uneasy - a vague, gnawing disquiet that settled in the pit of his stomach.

If these ‘heartless’ really did have it out for him…He wanted to know why as well.

Sheathing his weapon, he looked over to the other, half-lidded stare settling upon her face. “They have a thing for eyepatches too or something?”

She could only scoff at his lackadaisical response. After whipping her arm, rainfell vanished in a flurry of sparkles. That way she could fold her arms over her chest and truly give him a certain look.

❝ Well maybe instead of listening to that call, you should run away from it. ❞ Her knuckle presses into her top lip as she considers the statement more deeply, though. ❝ Especially since it looked as though they really had it out for you... why is that...? ❞

Her thoughts are aborted when her eyes flicker his way again to impart another warning in response, ❝ Those are heartless. Monsters from the dark that steal hearts. ❞

He stared straight back, brows raising and voice unfaltering as he responded -

“Sorry? No - are you thinking of the pizza place down the street, perhaps?”

Not that she needed to see him to know exactly who she was talking to. Not so long ago, she wouldn’t have - his voice never would have connected to the name, changed so drastically over the years.

Now, though? Oh, he definitely couldn’t fool her.

A tiny, childish grin broke out over his features.

Aerith sighs, PHS against her ear. "Ton." Bright voice drops to a brambled tone, spinning on her heel to face the former deepground trooper. "I'm standing right next to you."

So, this guy didn’t know either.

He took the disappointment with an apathetic stare over at the wall, slumping back into his chair. From that height his legs angled out crooked, just slightly too long to align right with the floor.

“Not really – just hoped I might be able to move on through the woods before it gets dark.”

Lie. Truth. He was in a rush. He was always in a rush. Lingering long in any one location never panned out into anything good…not for someone like him, anyway. The mere thought of being stuck there conjured a dull twinge of unease in his stomach – a feeling that persisted in the reality, too, clinging to him like a stifling blanket.

So, the latter was true - he really did want to move on. His companion didn’t need to know the true reason, though - or the constant underlying urgency.

“Ah well. Is what it is,” he mused, expression apathetic. “Wish I’d brought a boardgame, though.”

"I've missed you."

His back was to her when he uttered those three words, as though he'd been... nervous about saying them. Perhaps unsure how how she'd react or maybe even afraid of saying them. After all, because of his curse, he thought himself a danger to be around. Thus why he'd been so adamant on staying away from her, but... the Queen was stubborn. And so saying those three words meant he was happy to have her around again, and to be around her, and that despite the danger she was in, he wanted her to stay.

They were words she'd already said to him when they first found each other again - or rather when he found her - but he hadn't said them back and she understood why. He was certainly different from when they were together as kids. He was incredibly guarded and reserved, no longer the boy full of life and energy and adventure, but given all that happened to him, all that was happening, Garnet could understand why.

The events in her own life also changed her.

So, he wasn't alone. He didn't have to be alone... even with his curse. Because no matter how long it took, Garnet would help find a way to cure him. To rid him of it. And if it proved impossible, well, not even the world's most viscous monsters would keep her away. Not this time. And maybe... maybe he understood that now. Maybe he accepted it.

Because of those three words he said to her. Three words that meant the world to her, even if he couldn't look at her. But he didn't have to.

Garnet stood and made her way over without a word and still quiet, her arms wrapped around his middle from behind, underneath his own arms, and she pulled him gently back against her. Eyes welled with tears now, she pressed her forehead to the back of his neck and closed her eyes as she embraced him like this. She took in a deep breath, breathing him in, as her arms tightened around him just a bit, enjoying his warmth. Enjoying the closeness and the comfort and sense of peace it provided her.

For him, too, she hoped.

In this moment, she didn't need to say anything in return. The way she held him conveyed it all.

Today was shaping up to be one of those days.

He muttered under his breath, glancing down at the fresh gash marked into his side. Just past him, the last beast crumbled into wisps of red smoke, soon disappearing completely, as if it had never been there at all.

If only it hadn't decided to leave a mess of blood all over his shirt while it was at it.

Now that the coast was clear, he could hear Cow trotting into the clearing, a snort of greeting offered as she came to a stop by his side. He was about to turn to her, give some sort of greeting in turn, but -

His eye flickered around the area.

There was something else there.

Forcing his posture to remain casual, he did in fact turn to Cow, one hand raising to pet her face as he looked sideways.

Oh, yeah. That was definitely something.

A person. Just standing there.

How long had they been there?

"Out enjoying the woods?" he asked, smile lazily falling into place as he regarded the stranger.

All the while, he kept his wound out of view, one arm lowered to hide it.

Music Headcanons - Still Accepting!

How about a dual high point and heavy issue?

Which would be -

Gemiya.

She caught him off guard. For several reasons, really - the way she keeps popping up, how she hasn't left even after learning more about his curse. The fact she seems to see past his clown antics and takes him seriously.

Gemiya is the true knight - the hero that swoops in and saves the day at the last moment. And he has absolutely no idea why she's decided to try and save him.

He'd rather she didn't. She's just going to get hurt. And even worse, now that he's started to trust her, it's only going to sting all the more when she finally gives up.

But...things feel just that little bit brighter when she's around. Sometimes, he catches himself giving a genuine smile or laugh. Even with all the other worries, he's happier than he's been in a long time.

She makes him feel there's still something worth fighting for.
