40,000 years ago, early humans painted hands on the wall of a cave. This morning, my baby cousin began finger painting. All of recorded history happened between these two paintings of human hands. The Nazca Lines and the Mona Lisa. The first TransAtlantic flight and the first voyage to the Moon. Humanity invented the wheel, the telescope, and the nuclear bomb. We eradicated wild poliovirus types 2 and 3. We discovered radio waves, dinosaurs, and the laws of thermodynamics. Freedom Riders crossed the South. Hippies burned their draft cards. Countless genocides, scientific advancements, migrations, and rebellions. More than a hundred billion humans lived and died between these two paintings—one on a sheet of paper, and one on the inside of a cave. At the dawn of time, ancient humans stretched out their hands. And this morning, a child reached back.

me: I’m a homebody i like to stay at home!
the home:
muddles my perception of time
Changes in both size and distance
lulls me into sense of safety and twist it into an oppressive paranoia inducing hellouse-scape
compels me to forget my own autonomous existence
waters down the outside and/ or exaggerate it to mythical extent
shrinks front door perron when i ascend, jarringly draws it out when i descend.
all its windows views are other walls of itself
the backyard fence looms in every horizon
bitter to abandonment of what belongs under its roof, including me when i go out to buy some good ol orange fanta
doesn’t look for me under its roof, it always knows where I’m.
when it sleeps doors never open, i don’t know it’s sleeping schedule
whatever happens silently around the corners is real, my apprehension is valid and understandable, and indeed i should panic.

neil, do you think humanity will ever run out of original stories to tell? that one day there will be no more new books or movies, because every single plot has been wrote or filmed?
I think we ran out of original stories 100,000 years ago telling tales around our fires. But that's okay. We tell the old stories new, and there's always an audience on the way who have never heard them before.

(about this guy)
a kiln god is a small clay sculptural creature that stays on/in/near a kiln while it’s firing, to watch over the pottery inside and protect it
Tumblr media
mine are all vaguely humanoid and holding pottery, but they can be anything
Tumblr media
a lot of people leave their kiln gods unglazed, and only ever make one or two. because I work with a shared kiln, my kiln gods have to be inside the kiln so they don’t get bumped or broken, so it makes more sense to glaze them and keep making more
Tumblr media
(^this one I kept, she lives on my pottery desk)
Tumblr media
people have lots of little traditions around kilns and pottery. there are so many variables to successfully finishing a piece of pottery, and many of the steps are out of our control. it’s nice to have a kiln god watching over our work
Tumblr media
if you take a pottery class, your teacher might mention the kiln gods. for some potters/studios they’re more of a concept than anything physical
Tumblr media
what can I say, humans just love to make little guys
