upon the release of the sims, the official website used to offer a standalone program called “mini aquarium”, modeled after the one in the base game. it included in game sound effects such as a female sim giggling when you click “watch”, or if you were unlucky enough to snuff out your poor fish, the default toilet flush sound, among a few others. it’s still available for download here if you want to try it yourself!

Hello. :) Is there someone who knows where I could find these cars by VPN’s Garage? I came across this page while looking for old cars for my Decade Challenge but the links are not working anymore since the page of VPN is long gone and wayback machine also didn’t help. :( (also tagging @sims2packrat just in case) Also I’m looking for other vehicles from the time around 1910- 1920 (no matter if decorative or drivable).

So you all have heard of The Sims but...
... have you heard of Little Computer People?
Tumblr media
Released originally in 1985, Little Computer People was developed by Activision. It was a game that would later inspire Will Wright to create The Sims, including getting feedback from several of the devs that worked on this game.
The game released on Commodore 64, Atari ST, Apple II, Amiga and some more. All the big home computer systems at the time of release. I have to admit, I think it looks the best on the Amiga. A bit more colorful and detailed than the Commodore 64 counterpart which you can see above.
Tumblr media
So how did this game work? You started with an empty house, what was unique at the time was that no house was alike from another copy of the game; the rooms were in different locations and even the colors of furniture and such was different. Eventually a little man moved in, who you could later interact with in various ways. There were no winning conditions, perhaps unusual for games of that time; with that said it was still welcomed with praise and even won best original game at the Golden Joystick Awards in 1986.
So what happened? Well, this was apparently never supposed to be a game rather a proof of concept from Activision. There were planned add-ons for the games, to add more furniture and even an apartment building but those never materialized. Gameplay, as I can imagine it, grew quite stale after a while, as the game was essentially a home computer tamagotchi.
But it shows us that the idea of a life simulation is way older than The Sims, and perhaps some day it will become even more advanced than it is today.

Simblr Community Challenge
How long have you been playing the Sims? While I haven’t been playing since the actual release in 2000, I did start playing around 2001/2002 which is longer than most of you on here.
How long have you been a Simblr, and why did you become one? I started my first blog around late 2012/early 2013. Sadly it got hacked and deleted (yeah I know, sounds dumb but I woke up from a nap seeing an email “Your email adress to your tumblr account got changed” and the tumblr blog just gone). My currently blog I’ve had since 2014. Why I started a sims blog was because I was, like many others at the time, moving over from Livejournal.
What type of Simblr are you? The old grumpy old-timer who rarely posts stuff these days. I used to post a lot of Strangetown, and started the idea with a “unified” Strangetown using lots and sims from all games. I’m very world building oriented.
Which generation of Sims do you primarily play? The Sims 2. I do have both The Sims and The Sims 3 installed, which I both enjoy however. I tried The Sims 4 once on September 2nd 2014 and have never had the interest to touch it ever again.

fun fact! the sims 2 for console was actually the scraps of a cancelled sequel to the urbz: sims in the city. the urbz 2 was cancelled in december of 2004 due to only meeting half the sales required of a sequel (2.4mil out of 5mil). instead of scrapping what they already had, devs took several planned features and premade assets for urbz 2, including direct control of your sim, layered clothing in CAS, and multiple locations (like jugen house and the HMS amore), and used them instead for the sims 2 console. multiple objects and NPCs were also brought over from urbz 2.
since they were pressed for time to catch up for a console release following the PC release of the sims 1, assets also from the original urbz game were ripped and recycled. one of the more obvious examples is seen above, in CAS, where sims and urbz both use the exact same animations.
pour one out for the urbz sequel we deserved

the comments versus tags thing is so funny because you can tell who has never
had a post blow up with people adding mindless comments to it rendering your activity completely unusable
had an offhand comment on someone else’s post get reblogged to a fucking weird corner of tumblr that you wish had never found you
