Why do we need O-RAN when we already have 3GPP interfaces that are Open and Standardized?

The RAN Interfaces are requiring the need to be Open. Even though the networks use 3GPP Interfaces that are already open and standardized the need for the O-RAN Interface has acquired more importance.

The two most important elements of the RAN Interfaces in 3GPP are the Fronthaul Interface and the X2 Interface.

Earlier when the service providers saw the cost advantages to pool their baseband units in a central location to serve the antennas on many towers, the Fronthaul Connection was established. Using the CPRI Protocol, the Fronthaul Interface is between the BBU Software (DU/CU) that runs on the COTS server and the Remote Radio Head (RU). Because of the CPRI protocol, there were some vendor-specific implementations, high bandwidth, and latency variations constraints hindering the objective to be “Open”. With O-RAN Interfaces, we can have different “Open Alternatives” so that the vendors can use 5G and also other ethernet-based open frothaul.

The second reason being the optional interface, X2 linked between two eNodeBs in the LTE network makes it difficult for the operator to deploy the multi-vendor network as the RAN Vendors will have to use proprietary messages.

Therefore the X2 interfaces need to be open so that the 5G RAN can be accessed by working in conjunction with the 4G LTE access network and 4G Core.

Since the Open RAN unfolds the multi-vendor RAN system and introduces more software into the telcos’ networks it helps in reducing their cost and diversifying their supply chains. This is why the O-RAN constantly demands interoperability and requires validation.
