I think you can tell a lot about how rigorous and committed someone's belief in a human right is by how quickly they are able to name people who they think could or should have that right taken away.

It seems like the older I get, the more irrationally angry casual censorship makes me. And it isn't just the "unalive" "grape" alleged filter-dodging vernacular, but the way normal words will be peppered with asterisks, or screenshots will have words like "gay" "hell" "fuck" etc either partially or entirely blurred. Who is this helping? What is the purpose of it, except to reinforce shame and elevate a flimsy perception of purity and safety, however those things manifest. It's so tiresome and I'm sick of it.

De-Escalation Tactics for the Modern Homo(sapien)

The first thing to pay attention to when entering a situation is how the other person is approaching you. Are they yelling? Arms up? Do they have a weapon?

The second thing you can do is modulate your body and tone to respond. Remember the key word is DE ESCALATE. That means whenever they start to get louder or more animated your response should be the opposite.

Keep your hands out of your pockets and at your side. Bonus points if you show them your palms. Think of the most deflated jazz hands you can. Don't clench them or make fists. Don't raise them near your face or head. If you talk with your hands like I do try to keep it slow and low. The word of the day is in fact Slow.

Your voice is next. If they're shouting it can be tempting to match volume or tone but this will only make things worse. Talk like Bob Ross. The "social worker/kindergarten teacher" voice may feel stupid but it makes you a non threat.

Relate to them personally. If you know them talk to them about what you know. If you don't know them ask them their name and what's wrong etc. Offer your own name and tell them how you're feeling. If the person is having some kind of mental breakdown assure them you're going to help. If they are engaged in a fight offer to leave with them or call for help etc.

Pay attention to your surroundings. Are others there? Where are the exits? Don't block the upset person from having a way to leave. Try not to corner them or get in their personal space. If you can sit down somewhere comfortably or get them to sit down that can help a lot. Try to get them away from other people, sometimes the yelling or anger can be a sort of posturing because of social pressure to act that way especially for men in front of other men.

This seems to be the scenario everyone is afraid of happening. As someone in a not-so-friendly area (it's literally known as the "city of sin", we have tshirts and a song about it) let me say this; if someone really wants to hurt you there is not much you can do to stop them unless you are bigger, stronger, luckier, and LUCKIER. Yes I said it twice. But despite what true crime and netflix documentaries want you to think, serial killers are not lurking around every corner waiting with an ax. Most violent crimes are acts of opportunity done by sick people, and I use that term compassionately. Most rape is done by someone close to the victim that they knew and trusted, not someone hiding in the bushes.

If someone just wants your money or your bag (99% likelihood) ffs give it to them. They are most likely desparate and struggling more than you know, they do not want to hurt anyone they just want to relieve their own pain. It is not worth a scuffle or your life. We all laugh at the "throw them off their rhythm" bit but it's got some good advice; keeping a change purse or something to toss at a moments notice. I keep a lil purse of singles that I get as change (I also hand some out to panhandlers so win win).

If you are outside and near people, being attacked, scream. Get a whistle or a noisemaker. If you are inside and near people, scream. Share your location with friends. Walk in a group.

Today I learned that Van Halen have that rider in their contract about “a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed” in order to know at a glance if the promoter read the entire contract.  And the reason they do THAT is because they once had a stage collapse because a promoter hadn’t read the proper way to set up all the specific technical stuff.

So if the band goes in the dressing room or catering and sees brown M&Ms, they know they have to double-check the stage setup for safety.
