The original rainbow flag was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978 as a symbol of hope. He refused to trademark or copyright it as a gift to the Gay community. Bears are a subculture of mlm queers characterized as bigger, hairier, & usually full bodied. Bear culture is also about the exploration of "masculinity" ranging from over the top tough guy ruggedness to cute & cuddly caregivers. The Bear Pride flag was created by Craig Byrnes in 1995. The stripes symbolize different hair colors to emphasize inclusivity. In my experience they do give the best hugs. Hug a bear today.
