Motorsport legend Ickx is crazy about Verstappen: 'He is one of the few who still recognizes me'
The 80-year-old raced in Formula 1 from 1966 to 1979 for McLaren, Brabham, Ferrari and Lotus, among others. He also took part in the Dakar and was very competitive in endurance racing. Ickx has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times. Without having to ask, the Belgian starts talking about Verstappen.
'It's like they suddenly discovered Max. Even when he's not in the best car, which they say has to be the best car, he still manages to be there.'
'That's the difference between an ordinary driver and an exceptional driver. He doesn't have to prove anything anymore, but he's still there'
'What you have to understand is that racing is very difficult these days, because it's not about tenths of a second, but about milliseconds. And... Max is Max!'
'I like him very much. He's one of the few who still recognizes me in the paddock. I come from a different time, you're not supposed to know me, He's one of the few drivers, who lives in a demanding time, who still comes up to me to say hello. That touches me.'
'He is a good person, but there are only 24 hours in a day. It is a full-time job these days. There is almost no time for anything else in a race weekend. I don't want to disturb them either, because they are all so focused.'
When F1Maximaal.nl wants to ask about the time he drove and then wants to talk about the current era of Formula 1, Ickx corrects:
'You should never compare. It's a big mistake. You have to live in the present, look at the present. Senna, Schumacher, Max... They all have different characters, but Max is one of those exceptional people who have something extra compared to others'
'Those exceptional people are Prost, Senna, Fangio. They just had something more. That's why I can say: in the past they talked about the best car, but Max doesn't have the best car. He's still there. That shows how exceptional he is'
Ickx continues. He sees Verstappen driving even better than last year.
'Certainly! He's gaining experience. You also see: within the same team you have two drivers... Whoever they are, Max is still at the front. That says enough.'
