I don’t think obiyuki is impossible. They are the most developed ship in the manga by far and there’s a lot of foreshadowing that points to them being endgame.

I agree with everything you say! It’s just that when I care about something so much, I try not to get my hopes up too high and thus think almost strictly logically about it as my way of coping...So I try and remind myself that Zenyuki is what started it all and is the relationship that is stated by the characters to be romantic in nature. Though deep down I don’t actually care about those things and would accept whatever plot devices needed to make obiyuki happen haha.

They really do have the most developed and fleshed out relationship and I love it so much?!! And they’ve gone through so many of my favorite ship tropes it’s not even funny! Enemies to friends (to lovers)?✔ Think it’s unrequited?✔ He only ever calls her by her nickname so when he uses her real name you know it’ll be big?✔ Bodyguard falling for their ward?✔ Her looking forlornly out the window in worry when he’s gone?✔ Child they take care of?✔ Everyone just assumes they’ll be able to find one if they find the other?✔ A simple gift that became a treasure?✔ All of the hand symbology?!!✔ And now even fake dating?!! I just can’t with them.

Sorry this took forever to answer, I just really struggled as I have so much to say about them that I didn’t want to accidentally type up a 5 page essay lol.

Something I noticed with HanaNene is that whenever other people are around—Hanako ends up trolling the moment:

^^^ Like here, because Kou and Yako we’re watching, Hanako ends up making a radish joke because he’s not the best with handling his feelings, especially not in front of others.

However, when it’s just the two of them, things are very different.

We have one of the most tenderest moments, the Confession Tree arc, in which Hanako apologizes for hurting her and making her cry, and hugs her! Telling her to stay with him until she’s done crying!

We have this scene, where Hanako was about to confess something to Nene, perhaps about his brother, perhaps something we will never get to know...but still, we see again, Hanako letting himself be vulnerable when he’s only with Nene!

And we have a moment where Hanako offers his hand to Nene because she got separated from all of them, and it’s because they’re basically alone together in the crowd of spirits that Hanako was able to be vulnerable enough to offer his hand in the first place.

And we learn earlier in the chapter that Hanako finds hand holding to be a illicit sexual relation that he doesn’t approve of XD (cough, doesn’t approve of when it’s Kou and Nene, but fine when it’s himself and Nene xD)

^^^This scene, Hanako hugs Nene and confesses how much he missed her—and even though they are in the middle of the classroom, it’s as if they’re alone since no one can see Hanako. And he even tells her how worried he was over her—and I always see this scene as an almost kiss with the way Hanako leans in so much.

Also this scene ^^ Hanako confesses to Nene how happy it made him when she said she likes him. Not only does he confess no girl has ever said that to him before, he even goes as far as to confess to her that he killed his brother—his biggest sin and burden.

Then we have this scene, where Hanako talks about how he wishes tomorrow would never come and for time to stop. And it’s such a deep and vulnerable conversation, letting us in on Hanako’s psyche. That he truly doesn’t want to leave Nene in this world. That he wants to stay with her forever, frozen in this little space of time.

But Nene sadly doesn’t quite get it because she didn’t know yet that she’s dying or that Hanako was planning to leave her here.

Lastly, we have Hanako at his absolute most vulnerable stage as he tells Nene how desperately he wants her to live. And again, it’s because they’re alone that Hanako is able to open up to her, and be completely honest.

And what makes me so excited for this current arc is that HanaNene are alone together!! (If we ignore Sumire for a bit xD), so who knows what kind of soft development we will get next!

One of my favs from the manga (out of the one billion other favorites I have lol) but this one is definitely a highlight. Yashiro was trying to think of a way to cheer up Kou from what happened (not saying it due to any anime watchers) and Akane suggested the Spring Festival. Obviously Hanako was flustered by the thought of only the two of them, Yashiro and Kou going together... alone... without him and he didnt like the idea 😏💕 heh heh.
