"Saturday”, by Lieska Guzman

I was doing my usual web-surfing after work, and I managed to stumble across this gem here.. I found this photographer who happens to have a website full of various projects separated by title. I checked them all out, and I found them very interesting, but the one that spoke to me the most was titled “Saturday”. I recommend giving it a look. It’s all explained under the “Artist statements” section, so you get a general idea of what the artist is going for. However, I viewed it first before reading it and tried to see how I felt about it without knowing exactly what the artist was going for originally. In fact, I tend to do that with a lot of art, and considering I’m not a photographer, painter, or in any way deeply involved in visual arts, I sure as hell can still appreciate it, and this is one of those moments. There are a ton of photos here that are well documented, but aside from being great shots, they hold an immense amount of emotion within them. After discovering that the subject in question is the grandmother of the artist who is suffering from dementia, you see the way the ones who love her begin to revolve around her. You get shots of the things in the room she resides in, a television set, a radio, all things that would be familiar to someone.. but how hard it is to accept and realize that as of now, it’s unfamiliar and confusing.

Among all of the beautiful shots of the subjects personal belongings, the photographs of what could be family and friends (remember, outside perspective here,) and the food being served by her loved ones, I have personally chosen two that are my absolute favorite in terms of the emotion they convey. One is of a woman with red hair leaning over the grandmother as the grandmother looks with a smile on her face, and the second is a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. However, that’s not to say that the rest of the photos aren’t groundbreaking within themselves. The last of the photoset was a trinket for holding keys and keychains and the small things you’d hang up when you get home and grab before you leave. However, there’s more in this than just a cute trinket. It’s dawned with the name “El Salvador”, which is most likely the home of this woman. It’s a great shot, but the fact that it’s the last in the photoset is what really sets this whole project off for me. All in all, I just wanted to share it with you since it really hit home for me, as I know the feeling of a face you adore and love to see look at you with a smile on their face one moment, and the next.. have no idea who you are or what you’re doing there, or even why they may be there. Again, this is an outside perspective. Maybe I’m wrong, but art is art, and this is how I saw it. If I missed the point entirely, it doesn’t change the fact that the artist set out to convey an emotion, and I definitely picked up from it and I think it’s one of the best sets of work I’ve seen in a long time. http://www.lieskaguzman.com/

Wtf is still wrong your eyebrows

Well… truth is…. they aren’t really my eyebrows. See, when I was a child, I was born with no eyebrows, and as I grew, my eyebrows didn’t. So I had to improvise. You know those fuzzy caterpillars? I got 4 of them, and very carefully with tweezers I plucked off every single hair off those 4 caterpillars. I went to my uncle who luckily is a surgeon, to surgically implant the little caterpillar hairs to where eyebrows would be on my face and thankfully all these years they are still there. If it weren’t for those wonderful fuzzy caterpillars, I would still to this day have no eyebrows. Bless them.

What? How is doing my makeup like Cleopatra racist? People were saying I looked like her so I started reading about her and was inspired to do her makeup like hers. I didn’t know it was wrong, I was just liked her makeup and wanted to see if I could recreate it.

OTAKUTHON 2015 THANK YOU
