Statement
For my final work, I named it “irrational city”. I have chosen the topic of rebellion in the contemporary art. In my final work, there are three parts (or two parts) of them, the first one is a design of the “irrational city”, the second part is like a colour palette of the city design. I mainly used Photoshop and Illustrator to finish my final work, illustrator for buildings and landscapes illustrating, and photoshop for colouring and to finalise the whole design.
There are two artists I was researching and referencing to my work, Jess Johnson and Hitchhiker. Jess Johnson’s drawing and installation practice are influenced by the speculative intersections between language, science fiction, culture and technology. In her drawings, she depicts complex worlds that combine densely layered patterns, objects and figures within architectural settings. Johnson’s drawings are often displayed within constructed environments that act as physical portals into her speculative worlds. Hitchhiker is a musician-producer, but there is a very distinct personal style in his music video. In his music video, a metallic polygon-shaped dancer is dancing on the street, he combines virtual and real objects together, it forms his own style. “You don’t know what the truth is but when you see the video [and read the subtitles] you feel it is true. That’s my goal,” said Hitchhiker."It's a sort of comedy.” Both of these two artists perform artworks that “rational to irrational”.
In my design, the most important and distinct element to perform the concept of rebellion and irrational. Different colours give the different atmosphere to audiences. The same illustrated project can give audience different perceptions in use different harmonise colours. Even different colours can lead audiences to unalike focusing point. In my view, the use of colours can straight direct people to understand what the artist wants to express. So, the concept of rebellion and irrational also can be described by the design of harmonising colours.
Illustrating is the most complicated part of my final work. I just built a normal city landscape by the illustrator. Because of my limit illustrator skills, I followed a particular tutorial to complete the illustrating, and also use materials to enrich the whole view(trees). Before the whole landscape built, I developed my ideas from a very unlike start. At the origin, I had an idea to present the rebellion of a “city” concept, A fillet travelling through the street, so I built those buildings in my experiment, then I realised compared to show a fillet “swim” through the city, colours more intuitive to show “irrational”, so I decide to play my creation on colours. On the other hand, to better present a city view, I found out the isometric vision style instead of a normal 3-dimension perspective view, it better to show the shape of buildings. The 3-dimension perspective looks like showing a part of the city, isometric shows a whole city landscape.
I just illustrated black and white illustrations in illustrator, for colouring I use the tool in photoshop called Gradient Map. The Gradient Maps tool has a serious side in creating custom black and white conversions and a more frivolous one in adding colour to an image. So there are many creative colours can be edited via gradient map, hence I played on different colours then added to my final work.
According to my concept, “irrational city”, I chose a rainbow tone to built the landscape, and a pink & warm tone as the main tone of the whole project. The biggest component is the city, the city is bright coloured, and it fainted and distorted looks irregular.  Not only shows irrational on colour but also on shape. Other buildings were floating above the city that exacerbates the concept “irrational”. The background colour also used the gradient map, that provides an atmosphere of illusion.

Mysterious Korean musician Hitchhiker. His song has no real, intelligible words, just a series of pitchshifted mouth sounds over sternum-rattling bass. The video is even more striking, featuring a series of CGI humanoids dancing around various neon urban landscapes.

Artist Research - Jess Johnson
Jess Johnson was born in Tauranga, New Zealand in 1979. In 2016 she relocated permanently to New York after twelve years of living and working in Melbourne, Australia. Her drawing and installation practice is influenced by the speculative intersections between language, science fiction, culture and technology. In her drawings she depicts complex worlds that combine densely layered patterns, objects and figures within architectural settings. Johnson’s drawings are often displayed within constructed environments that act as physical portals into her speculative worlds. Her recent video collaborations with Simon Ward have involved translating her drawings into animated Virtual Reality, thus enabling her audience to have the simulated experience of entering the hypnotic realms depicted in her drawings.

Artist Statement ADAD1002
The topic I have chosen for my poster is the creative rebellion in the contemporary art, and the artist I have chosen for inspiration is Eddie Colla.  As a street artist, most of Colla’s works are illustrating characters. An obvious element in Colla’s artwork that is those portrayed character’s is masked. So in my opinion, the ‘Mask’ is a very important key point of his artwork, also the masked character shows the theme: rebellion, a metaphor that infers protectiveness against not only the physical but also psychological reverberations of our society and the oppressive forces, representing a dynamic of fear and protection. In my work, I add the ‘mask’ to the character I illustrated, also he only shows the side face, he is not sighting to the front, which means his inner feeling that he wants to escape from the reality. Either the mask and the side face stress the word rebellion, that’s why I set the main part of my poster like this.  For colours, I chose black & white for the character, because of to achieve the theme that he wants to fade himself out. To make a contrast, I put the bright purple as the main colour of the background of the poster, assort to the rough painting, it presents a rebellious sense. Also yellow I chose as the base colour for words strips, it forms a contrast tone of purple, also it enriches the colour of the poster. And phrases show on strips are Japanese, 繰り返す偽りで 夢を汚し 妄想だけ膨らんで はじけ消える(With a lying falsehood Dirty a dream Only the delusions are inflating Burn out). The reason why I have chosen a language that people don’t really understand(even I don’t really understand either.) The unknown creates an atmosphere of mystery and curiosity, also in the other hand, I think Japanese has a naturally rebellious sense, so I put Japanese characters into my work, that improve an aesthetic perception.

Research
Topic: Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?
Rebellion: (Oxford Dictionary)
1 An act of armed resistance to an established government or leader.
1.1 [mass noun] The action or process of resisting authority, control, or convention.
Eddie Colla
Known for stickers, stencils, and wheat pastes filled with defiance and socio-political activism, Eddie Colla is an American street artist and designer, whose works can be seen throughout public spaces in San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Miami. A powerful collection of expressions, his work illustrates how individuals on both sides of the fence react to the constant threat of social and political desire for conformity. His visions of people in the throes of isolation, oppression and conformity are multi-layered and crafted in an assembly of aesthetic retinal fantasy. Subtly defiant, his visual imagery allies itself against the forces that stain what lies deep in the heart of all his work – a celebration and a passion for freedom. Portrayed characters are often donned in surgical mask and gloves, a metaphor that infers protectiveness against not only the physical but also psychological reverberations of our society and the oppressive forces, representing a dynamic of fear and protection.
