Chapter Four: you were a wanderer / back when you were young Words: 9171

Zoox didn’t know how he knew his way around the region; it was the same way he didn’t know how he knew how to sort money, or how he knew to wrap his ankles when they got hurt. He had woken up with a lot of memories he didn’t know he had, basic knowledge but nothing concrete or anything that personally connected to him.

He had woken up confused and groggy, a song deep in his soul that crashed with the waves and no idea who he was or how he had ended up with sand in his hair and his entire body soaked. It had been night and freezing and he could barely peel himself from the sand before the world went sideways and he was prone once more, only a few feet from where he had once been.

It had been hours until he had even made his way off the sand, everything blurring together. It had been even longer until he had been found.

And his world, or what little he knew of it, was turned upside down as he learned that he had now been chosen to be a Cambrian. 

Words, ones of melancholy, had fallen from Tesselation’s mouth, about those who were lost out at sea being returned to a home with magic and family that would stay with him forever. Memories that shouldn’t be lost.

Magic Zoox didn’t have access to, a soul-bonded family that didn’t exist, and memories that were faded.

shattered gifts that heal

Summary: Lup brings her family together to celebrate Candlenights and to help two of them heal. Words: 14287

It sparked from an idea, a brief clashing of neurons that had Lup sitting up frantically in the night (and wasn't that a new concept? She hadn't realized how much she missed sleeping until she was in and out of meditation for over ten years and didn’t have the option to sleep).

She hadn't had a single Candlenights for - for the same amount of time. The last one she could even remember was spent looking down at the world they were condemning to war, and there was very little attempt from anyone at celebrating that year.

Rationally, she knew that she was technically there for the previous Candlenights - and it is said in the most technical of ways, in a teasing voice that gets a blank look from Taako and wet eyes from Barry and a guilty look from Luce, but it was always fun to say it that way. She had been stuck in the Umbrastaff, but they had had worse Candlenights. And at least last year, she was surrounded by the people she loved.

“Lu?” came Barry’s voice from beside her, half slurred in sleep but still alert - they had all learned to be quick in their alertness, after a century. “What’s wrong?”

She turned to look at him, a smile fighting at her lips. He was always so adorable when he woke up, his bedhead and drool stains and half-lidded eyes that were so intelligent and focussed.

Bringing a hand to his face, she leaned her forehead against his. Morning breath didn't bother either of them anymore, not when they knew every other intimate part of one another.

“Nothing's wrong, babe,” she answered honestly. She couldn't blame him for not believing her, though. The amount of times she had shot awake, terror and fear taking her heart that she was trapped in her own creation once more, that her own family didn't remember her? It had happened far more than either of them liked.

Maman did not like him. She said she did, and he knew she did. But she...could not.

If maman liked him, why would she tell him about the dark? Why would she make him sit quietly in the classroom as she slowly extinguished every lantern? Why would she not turn them back on even if he cried?

Why would she try to scare him with the dark; why would she tell him stories about the shadows taking those not strong enough when she knew he liked to play with them?

The shadows lurched on his walls in the pale moonlight that filtered in from the curtains, low and dim. It was only enough to add the barest of differences to the dark, and it only made the room seem darker than it was.

Devo yanked his covers over his head, ripping them from where they had still been tucked under his mattress at the foot of his bed.

His heart was in his throat, fear coiling tight in his stomach. He could not see the shadows. 

He could not see the shadows.

At least when he could see them, he knew how close they were getting, knew when they could grab him. But now he knew nothing about what was in the dark.Nothing but the stories of pale, bony, cold hands that needed him to turn on the light. Light that he could not turn on because he did not know how and how did maman expect him to when she would not tell him -

Damn, not sorry at all who followed me for Taz and gets to see me being extra silly.

What if I cried happy tears, Indy? What if I did that?

I have stated time and time again that life did not - it did not exist before I met you. Was I happy and content? Yeah. Did I fucking love life then? Absolutely.

Did something click into place and the world finally stopped spinning after I met you? Yes. Yes it fucking did.

You found me in a, if I dare say it, quite vulnerable section of my life where everything was falling apart and when I met you I figured out - yeah, things are going to be alright.

And then you pulled me into TAZ and JRWI and soon Madoka Magica and I met Tigers and Coffee and Fish and - it's a piece of life I was missing. You all are...fantastic, for lack of words. You all are what makes it difficult to breathe and makes it so much easier to breathe, what makes it easier to get out of bed. And honestly? Yeah, our destinies were written in the stars and I am not upset about being bound to our fates if you all are in mine.

Thank you all so much for giving me legitimately the most fun convention I have ever been to, and the best birthday I’ve ever had. I could never have asked for a better crew and family. You are legit one of the funniest people I know, even when we first started interacting there was just something to you that screamed that you were the king of comedy. I’m still studying the Atlantean alphabet diligently, the world is not ready for the day that I can just write it without a guide. You are such an integral part of our crew, you breathe life into it and inspire others even when you don’t mean to. By the way, that book you made me is going to be something I cherish forever, I’m probably going to end up filling it up pretty quickly, but I’ll be figuring out ways to make it last! To my Jay Ferin, my silly brain-linked buddy. I really don’t know what qualifies someone as a best friend, but I do know you’re like number one in terms of friends in my books! To think we only met one year ago, by complete chance, and soon we’re gonna be able to hang out so much more often!! You’re such a kind, understanding person, it makes my heart hurt. On that same point, GOD, do you know how to break hearts with your writing. Literally, if anyone ever wants their fucking emotions torn out and scattered like dandelion seeds, just read literally anything this absolute demon of a person has come up with. It’s harrowing. That aside, I cannot imagine a life without you in it. I can barely imagine life before you were there, it’s so funny. I joke about you me and Ti being albatrio, but I truly think we’re just all meant to exist together. Something deep inside of me knows that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. We’ve talked a lot about fate and destiny, and not to sound super sentimental or anything, but with the little bracelet you got us sitting on my wrist, I can’t help but think. I think you two are my destiny.

Idk, that’s probably cheesy as hell. Still, I can’t wait to go skydiving with you, and celebrate your birthday like it’s the end of the world, and drag you out to experience every single thing life has to offer. See you soon, Sy!!

Not to be gay, buuuuut.

I miss you, so much. It’s been a day, and I already miss hearing your laugh and leaning up against you and being able to reach over and touch you and just know that you’re there. We can call, of course, but I am counting down the days until I can see you next. I’ve actually started using a calendar, since I’ve started talking to you in full, which is hilarious. If you were to tell me two months ago that I would be staying up every night falling asleep on call, counting days like an advent calendar I would probably call you crazy, because why would anyone ever spend that much time with another person, especially when they are so far away??

Yeah, I get it now. A lot of things make sense now. Like why people are made with an inherent sense of yearning, a need to find that other half, that missing piece. Why completionists exist, why someone would spend their entire lives searching just for an inkling of a feeling. Freight train, am I right?

You and Sy are people I feel like I’ve known my whole life, despite only really being aware of each other for such a short amount of time. I don’t feel like the small time period takes away from our closeness, though, which is funny. Like it wouldn’t matter if we’ve known each other years or months or days, as long as we know each other. That’s all that matters. All that matters is that we’re connected, by whatever force or coincidence.

If you end up moving to Portland, that’ll be so damn funny. I definitely won’t be bouncing off the walls and running victory laps or anything ahah. It’s weird, to be so aware of one’s own loneliness, but to also be fine with it, because I know it will be filled when I get to see you next. Because I made an oath, and I intend to keep it, extra forever.

Okokok that’s the end of my spiel. Well, also, to Ollie’s dad, and to Fish’s sibling thing, thank you so much for joining us for Kumo as well!! Chapter Two: letters from the sky Words: 5504

The letter sat heavy in her pocket. Contrary to what most people thought about "heavy letters", this one wasn't chalk full of serious topics or life-changing news.

She frowned at that thought, twining her fingers in the ribbon as she stood outside the door of Devo's current lesson. It was taught by the Hands of Guidance and when Amber had started following the heir into the room, the Hands of Guidance had stopped her with a look. 

She couldn't get the look of Devo staring back at her, half pleading, half resigned, and yet still following the Hands of Guidance into the room, out of her head.

The other lessons that had started off like that he had stormed out of the room, frowning the entire time. She had not been able to get him to even smile for the next few hours.

Something about it just bugged her. Sure, she as a child had hated the lessons she had been forced to attend, but she had usually been able to find some sort of joy in - in the people she surrounded herself with that could get her mind off of just about anything.

Those lessons generally weren’t something she had hated to the point where she frowned the rest of the day.

She had asked, that first day, still testing the waters, and Devo had just frowned at her, opening his mouth to respond before closing it just as quickly. He had stood there for a few minutes, just around the corner from the classroom looking so conflicted. And then, just when Amber thought he was about to start crying and she started panicking over that, he had turned, storming off to the library.

Watching over the heir was tiresome.

She snorted at that thought. Yeah, watching over Devo wasn’t life-changing. She knew how casually she had dropped it at the end of her letter after prattling about her day.

There was usually something rather daunting that came with being called to the Court of Justice. Perhaps it was because the order came from a barked voice she had grown used to, or perhaps it was because she was confident she had done absolutely nothing wrong - or, at the very least, nothing that could get her removed from the Guard - but Amber Gris was not worried.

That was the reason why she stood so loosely, leaning more on one leg than the other and playing with the deep green ribbon around her wrist, as she waited for Head Guardsman Ravi to show his face.

The guards stationed within the Court were too uptight to outright stare at her, but she knew the looks she got for her disrespect followed her around. She knew they looked down at her because of the school she attended, because of her 'disregard of the rules and the way things are run.’

She did not particularly care, though.

Amber knew she was regarded as one of the best, if not the best within the Guard, no matter her methods.

I plan to release the Oksamber fic I’ve been working on for a while on Thursday, so I thought this would be a good place to release the summary!

It is a fantasy AU that has Amber tasked with taking care of the heir of the kingdom Parrish. There will be a ball, childhood lovers, begrudging family, and more! I have the entirety of the first fic and most of the sequel planned out, and I plan on (hopefully, unless life gets in the way) updating every other week!

When Amber Gris, a simple guardsman for the kingdom Parrish, is tasked to be the personal guard of the heir to the kingdom, the Hand of Devotion, she was not expecting to find a family or dethrone a Vessel. She also didn't expect to find a familiar face under an unfamiliar name.

To be honest, she didn't know what she expected, but it wasn't any of that.
