like to me that’s the more romantic of the lines; the fact that kaz immediately checks himself and is like nah she’s not mine but i will liquidate all my assets to ensure she’s free.

So canonically, Kaz is totally jacked. Like he holds the weight of a grown man on multiple occasions. And I don't know about anyone else, but if I take a couple weeks off from working out, my muscle mass tanks, so like. Kaz must be working out like every single day. That's the real reason Kaz doesn't sleep much. Does paperwork all day, works out all night. Inej gets back from a mission and goes to drop off a contract at 3 am and Kaz is just doing vertical pushups

tbh I never saw myself drawing this scene, but I'm glad this commission gave me the opportunity to think about it. I wanted to show the scene in a way that was hopeful but not romantic; to see the moment through Inej's eyes rather than objectifying her (as a trafficking victim forced to be fetishized). I wanted it to be beautiful in a terrifying way, where things appear gilded but when you look into the shadows, they are in a cage filled with objects snatched out of context and displayed as "exotic" paraphernalia. I wanted Kaz to be a source of hope but not a savior; Inej is performing an escape act in this moment, and he's the audience. It was also my first time doing a real room and treating it as a character, which was a learning experience toward a goal of mine.

just me thinking about how a man walking down a crowded road will check to make sure his wallet is still there, and in doing so tells the thief exactly where his wallet is. Kaz looked at Inej to make sure she was still there, and in doing so told van eck exactly who to take 😭😭

my favourite thing about kaz is that he isn't a humourless miserable serious person. he's a drama queen, constantly sarcastic and genuienly laughs. he's cruel and terrifying, but he's also just a sassy teenager

I mean this in the most lighthearted manner, but: Every person who has ever said that Kaz and Wylan have a “father-son dynamic” must be an only child and therefore unable to recognize a sibling dynamic (to quote Nina) “even if it sidled up to you and stuck a lollipop in your mouth”.

“Isn’t this all for Inej?” Younger sibling making fun of their older siblings for their crushes? Check

Wylan saying that no of course he doesn’t want to be like Kaz and then mimicking his behaviors? While still calling Kaz out on his shit? Peak younger sibling behavior

Kaz being a little cruel to Wylan but still giving him advice, especially on overcoming his shame

Kaz letting Wylan think he fooled him while he knew everything all along (as an older sister we do that a lot, even though it usually doesn’t involve one’s not-so-dead mother)

Kaz constantly pairing up Wylan with Jesper like the ultimate matchmaker he is (let’s see how you handle your crush buddy)

Kaz lost his brother and had no one to guide him. (The way I see this) he’s to Wylan the older brother he (Kaz) needed but didn’t have.
