When Judges Assume That Men Cannot Control Their Own Sexual Urges

In Homer’s great epic poem The Odyssey, penned in the 8th century BC, the male hero Odysseus barely escapes the devious sorcery and seduction of several archetypal female temptresses. Last Friday, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled on a gender discrimination case brought by a dental assistant who had been let go from her job because she was “too attractive." According to the court documents, the dentist who employed her, Dr. James Knight, claimed that “her clothing was too tight and revealing and was distracting." He testified that he “didn’t think it was good for him to see her wearing things that accentuated her body."

OU STARS 2013 "We're a culture, not a costume" poster campaign

For the past two years, OU STARS (Ohio University Students Teaching About Racism in Society) has run an annual poster campaign focusing on stereotypes and cultural appropriation in racist Halloween costumes. We will be doing another poster campaign this year, and we’d like your input.

Is there a particular angle you’d like us to approach racist Halloween costumes from? Are there any non-Halloween-related issues you’d want our poster campaigns to confront in the future? Any suggestions or ideas appreciated. Feel free to reblog or leave us a message.
