bipolar rep in SKAM

Small side note before getting started:

Two years ago, while I spent a ridiculous amount of time refreshing the official website for updates, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder.  I can remember rewatching the episodes on my phone in my hospital bed and felt…comforted by the relatable storyline as I struggled to process and cope…and felt less alone.  This is why Skam means so much to me.

Intention/purpose:

In the early episodes of OG & Italia, we see evidence of both highs and lows for Even and Niccolo outside of the manic high that is typically, singularly presented in media as the only extreme end of the spectrum.  The extremes are just that, extremes that are severe highs or lows, but the majority of the mood disorder is spent fluctuating at lesser degree (but still volatile and unstable) on the mood spectrum.   

I wanted to share some common bipolar disorder symptoms and examples of mood fluctuations on the spectrum, at a lesser degree for these earlier episodes all the way to the extreme drop or high as evidenced in episode 8 & 9/10 for Even.

Examples:

Increased energy, hyperactivity, & impulsivity:

You can see the first real evidence of this in episode 4, for both Even & Niccolo, when they impulsively want to ditch the girls to breaking & entering in a stranger’s home / creepy “nuclear storage facility” to swim and make out underwater.

With increased energy & hyperactivity may also come fast talking, incoherent speech, and jumbled words.  We can all remember the room service scene in episode 8 where we can see the fear, sadness, & worry creep onto Isak’s face as he realizes Even’s out of character behavior may have deeper consequences (especially when remembering Sonja’s warning earlier that day).

Increased spending:

In OG, Even paid BIG bucks for a huge suite and ordered every item on room service menu.  A huge romantic gesture we know what they really wanted to do in that suite, but definitely an extreme for a high school student.  

I can’t judge - more than once I’ve spent $1,500+ on clothes and miscellaneous crap online…within a few hours.  And then came the pain of returning everything when I sunk back into depression…when I’m up now I call my sister to order any essentials for me since I can’t trust myself on Amazon.

Hypersexuality:

In OG episode 8, after getting back together in previous episode and cooking Isak breakfast and dancing to the girl squad anthem, Even is…horny.  He sends Isak texts about hard-ons during class, about what they did in the shower that morning, and passionately kissing (and totally out-of-context) in the hallway after meeting Isak’s friends.  All of this can be written off as typically high school boy behavior, but clear evidence of escalating behavior for Even.

Decreased need for sleep:

In OG, we see this a lot with Even starting in episode 4 and in episode 8.  He was unable to sleep when staying with Isak for the first time.  This is also where he used the Nas quote of  “i never sleep / cause sleep is the cousin to death” in the drawing for Isak.  In the hotel room, we get cute clips like Isak calling Even “baby” as he wants him to come back to bed…but also interspersed with foreboding music and cuts of and uneasy Even foreshadowing what’s to come.

It is so weird not needing/unable to sleep.  When I’ve been up and couldn’t sleep I felt more energy than normal and would try really hard to shut my eyes to sleep since my eyes would get so dry but couldn’t stop myself from jumping up to clean my pantry at 4am.  Typically I would go 3-5 days without sleep.

On opposite side of spectrum, depression:

I don’t even need to mention all the obvious, well-known effects of depression, but wanted to emphasize the physical effects of depression that we see with Even in og skam when he couldn’t get out of bed, slept for days, and being awake seemed painful with dark, thoughts of being alone or being a burden (intense guilt) even when surrounded by loved ones.  Another physical side effect is body pain, limbs feeling extremely weighed down, unable to speak or move mouth (for me - there were times when I struggled to breathe, couldn’t bring phone to my ear, and couldn’t find enough breath to speak)

And then there is variation in duration:

Cycles can be less frequent (maybe once a year or less) all the way to extreme with rapid cycling where you get multiple shifts per year (for me - I’ve had several months of rapid cycling (when trying to get stabilized on medications) where I went from medium-high manic episodes one week to extreme depression the next week…this doesn’t include the mixed episodes when both combined in a nasty mix - like strung out depression).

In OG, it’s very likely that Even was rapid cycling due multiple mood changes during series.  Even starts at a fairly even mood, then starts to ramp when breaking into stranger’s house, dampened after Isak’s confession about his mother, and then back to a escalating high when reconnecting with Isak in week before the hotel.

With Italia, there’s a clear shift from Niccolo’s elevated mood/behavior (running away from girls & breaking into freaky basement to impress Martino) to subdued mood in bed when discussing his fear of being left alone with just himself.  Being alone means without distraction from negative thoughts he can’t escape…except escaping from life entirely.

In episode 5 we also see Niccolo isolating himself from Martino, likely due to influence from his parents/girlfriend.  His girlfriend likely contacted his parents when she couldn’t contact him and was showing evidence of slipping into dangerous place/foreshadowing of an extreme high or low coming. 

Hopefully he will contact Martino later in episode 5, but it’s very likely he will continue to slip downwards with lower energy and depressed mood that we saw earlier in the same episode.

okay, so I’ve seen some of y’all talking about the amazing pool scene music (like woah amazing).  it kept tickling my brain, like i was remembering something that felt similar and/or evoked the same emotion.  

finally, found it!  it’s from SOTUS (thai bl drama, highly recommend) - distant signals by harry angstrom & jonathan buchanan.  

the soft parts at the beginning feel so similar but distant signals starts building around 1:20 and i feel it, woah.  i don’t know if it’s just the scenes from SOTUS tied to the music that makes it so powerful for me…but it’s also just amazing.

niccolo teasing martino about his sexuality (and martino rolling his eyes) 100% supports the theory that martino’s internal struggle this season is not acceptance of his sexuality but coming out and how it will affect his personal relationships (like how he’s been shy of physical contact with gio - like he doesn’t want gio to be “grossed out” when he learns the truth.  and that’s why the conversation about the volleyball coach was so important!  someone who is out, with a lover, and gio sees them as an equal to hang out and watch soccer...just like how martino hopes for in the future.)
