Sahay Ram Bose: the forgotten Indian mycologist

Name: Sahay Ram Bose

Birth Place: Nagbol, Hooghly, West Bengal, India

Born on: 15th February, 1888

Died on: 6th December, 1970

In the history of science those who have get permanent place among the Bengali, Sahay Ram Bose or S. R. Bose is one of them in the field of Botany. Sahay Ram Bose was an eminent mycologist in India and all over the world.

In the starting of his professional life he had introduced as a lawyer. But in the year of 1909, he was suggested by celebrated educationist Girischandra Bose and joined as lecturer of botany in Bangabasi College. In 1916, he had got opportunity to teach in Carmichael Medical College (now known as R. G. Kar Medical College) in Kolkata (then Calcutta). After certain a period he was suggested by Ekendranath Ghosh, professor of Zoology in Calcutta (Kolkata) Medical  College to work with Poliporus (a particular mycological family with many pore grown on wood block). He was arrived to Sri Lanka to accelerate his research. He had been visited University of Berlin, University of Surbone, Kew Botanic Garden of London and Natural History Museum of Paris and created liaison to increase scientific activity. He had experienced to assist Jagadish Chandra Bose in his homeland.

His research work was compiled in eleven parts. He has published many more theses in internationally well known science journal like Science and Nature.

For his association with various Fungus he invented two antibiotic named Poliporin1 and Campestrin2. He had interaction with Penecilin inventor Alexander Fleming.

Internationally and nationally recognized Mr. Bose was arrived Paris by the invitation of Government of Paris during year 1957-1959. CNSR in Paris and as Research Principal in School of Tropical Medicine, he has deled a glittered profession. Without this he had immense relation with R. G. Kar Medical and Bangiya Bigyan Parisad. Prokiti (Nature) Magazine had been published his article regularly. In one word, he had played relentless dedication to disseminate science awareness in whole life.

In his family life he had tolerable many more mourn. He had connected agricultural science with botany—that is his greatness. This is no barrier to say scientist, we could unable to recognize scientist Sahay Ram Bose’s dedication. Unfortunately he also has played major role to increase the yield of research in Botany.
