If I ever traveled back in time, I’d have a really hard time not singing/humming songs that don’t exist yet.

When I was a kid my dad told me “Never let anyone tell you how to live you life”. Now I’ve grown up and he’s pissed that I won’t let him tell me how to live my life.

Side Characters Do Not Cheat Death
I am not a main character in this world. While I see a lot of crazy things and have a lot of amazing friends, I myself have little to do with the fate of the world.
Oh, sorry, I haven't told you my name. Alpha Persiona, or A for short.
Anyway, death. You ever think about the eventual outcome? I do. People like me really have to watch out; we hardly ever are fated to come out alive when really bad disasters strike. Truth is, I've come face to face with death more than once. Luckily it was never my time.
My friend Serene, however...well, she has cancer. Her time is up; or at least the time the doctors gave her. She's only a pale imitation of her former self. I was glad she was awake when I came to visit her, but it took almost all of her energy just to sit up in bed.
"A? What do you think happens when we die?" She asked me suddenly, interrupting the conversation we were having.
"Well, Death comes to pick you up, of course. He'll take you peacefully to his realm, where you'll find peace."
"You said peace twice," Serene smiled, "but I understand. Thanks."
"Look, he's a really nice guy, once you get to know him. He's a little quiet though. Almost unnerving when you first meet him."
"Who?"
"Death, of course."
"Wait, don't make fun of me. I know there isn't such a person as death." Serene scowled.
"Then who's that?" I pointed.
"There is no one behind me!" She growled. "Stop making fun of me!"
"That's right. Don't put up with his nonsense." Death nodded and put a bony hand on her shoulder. She jumped out of her skin. Literally.
"Whoa. Careful now." I said as I caught her, "you left your body behind."
"No!" Serene gasped, "I... My body! Don't let him take it!"
"I didn't come for your body. I came...for you." Death gently laid her remains back on the bed. Serene screamed.
"Hello Darkness," I grinned, "my old friend."
"My name is not darkness. And that joke is so old." Death chuckled. "You know her?"
"Yeah, her name's Serene. She's a good friend of mine, so take good care of her."
"No!" Serene leapt up and ran to the far end of the room, "I don't want to die! Even if my body is broken and weak, it's my body and I love to live! I love my family too. I could never leave them!"
"You can't live forever. Just come with me, and everything will be fine. You'll be able to rest peacefully, I guarantee it." Death lowered his arms to his side.
"Oh, come on Death. You aren't telling her everything." I stood up and walked over to Serene,"thing is, you can challenge death to a game. Winner gets a wish granted. If you lose, Death takes you away."
"Fine. I wasn't really in the mood today, but whatever. You get to choose the game, so what will it be?" Death asked.
"...I'm really not very good at anything besides video games." Serene was embarrassed.
"Then pick a video game. I'll bring the consoles here." Death waved his scythe. A giant TV appeared against the wall.
"Then...Hyper Mash Bros! 2 out of 3! I won't let you beat me!" Serene said confidently.
A minute later they were in place. I, munching on Doritos and sipping on Mountain Dew, watched from behind.
"I chose Raimouse!" Serene said confidently.
"Then...I'll be Fabio. Prepare yourself." Death said, "start!"
The first battle was intense. I always like a game where the items are ramped up, and Hayrule castle is a fun stage. Serene used thunderbolt to her advantage, striking Fabio every time he was above her. She beat Death by a landslide.
"Wow! You're pretty good." Death took off his mask and sighed, "I see I'm going to have to go all out."
"Wha-?" Serene was surprised to see the face of a young man underneath. I laughed.
"Meet Abel, the first side-character in history. Also, being the first man to die, surprisingly few people know he was tasked with the sacred responsibility of guiding people to the afterlife."
"Sup." Death nodded.
"Wow. I never really thought about you. Uh, I mean," Serene became flustered, "after you died..."
"Man, it's okay. I get it. Gonna pick your next character?"
Serene was completely overwhelmed by Death's newest pick, Less. She gasped as she lost her final life, and fell back.
"You think he'd be busy with everyone dying and all that, but he has a lot of time to practice," I sat forward, "he was really going easy on you before."
"How is this possible?" Serene stared down at her controller.
"Think about it." Abel waved his scythe to create a platter of hamburgers, "why haven't any doctors or nurses rushed in here? Death exists outside the boundaries of space and time. Whatever happens here is only a second in your time."
"No, I mean, how did you beat me? I'm so good at this game. I haven't been beaten yet. How?" Tearfully Serene took a hamburger for herself.
"I told you, he's good. You might have to use your forbidden character. What do you say?"
Serene looked at me. She and I both knew she had sworn not to play this particular character for the rest of her life.
"I'm dead now." She muttered.
The third round started, and this time Serene had picked Kurby. Death chose ManaKnight. On the level that moves infuriatingly. I was excited.
Serena's hair started to float, and I knew her pupils were turning to pinpricks. I could almost sense the power coming off of her as she began to fight.
She was almost too good.
Death grunted in surprise as Serene started delivering damage without taking a single blow. Soon his brow furled, and he started to literally steam. I could tell he was getting angry.
I knew something he didn't.
Serene was a very low level technopath. The only time her powers had ever exhibited themselves was when she played this one game, this one character. She had connected so deeply with it...when she finally realized the unfair advantage she was gaining, she had put Kurby aside for good. She swore never to use him again, and she never connected with another character like that either. Because of that, the outcome of this battle was certain.
"I...lost." Death slowly put down his controller, "you win. You get your wish. I'll...put you back in your body."
"Are you lonely?" Serene lowered her head. "Who plays video games with you?"
"I...usually play alone. I don't keep company." Abel chowed down on a burger between sentences.
"I actually matched him once. I lost, of course. But it wasn't my time, so..." I said as I sat down between them. "Actually, I've kinda wondered myself. Must get lonely. Most people would say that sucks."
"I'm not most people. I'm Abel. When I was alive the only people around were my mom, dad, a couple of sisters, and the brother who took my life. I was on hunting trips for a week at a time. My afterlife has been pretty good actually in comparison. Besides, you think you've been my only acquaintance A? I've known people over the ages. I don't get attached though; they always perish and move on at some point."
We all ate in silence for a minute. Abel finished his burger, then pointed his scythe at Serene's body.
"When you're ready then."
"No. I-no. One more game. I-it's hard to explain," Serene said slowly, "I broke a promise. It's really hard to explain, but I cheated. When I swore not to use it as long as I live, well...I figured being dead was a loophole, but it's not. It's not fair. I...can we do that final battle over?"
Abel didn't get angry. He just nodded. They picked up their controllers, and chose their characters. Abel chose Less again. Serene chose Yushi. Stage: Yushi's island.
Serene laid into it with all she had. So did Abel. I could tell each of them were giving their all. They matched each other life to life, and when they were down to the final one each raised the other's points to the breaking point. Then Abel smiled.
With a crash Yushi blasted Less off the screen. Serene leapt to her feet in excitement. She calmed down almost immediately though, and looked sad.
"This is the most I've been able to do in months. I've had a great time. I'm especially glad we had that last battle. It really cleared my head and my misgivings."
"Are you ready then?" Abel asked.
"I am. But, I changed my wish. I want to become your partner Abel. I'll assist you in leading souls to the afterworld, alright?"
I spewed my Mt. Dew. I guess the person who wins get their wish granted, but...
"I guess I have no choice. But I won't say I'm disappointed. From now on you shall be Death's assistant, Serene." Abel pointed his scythe at her. A black cloak appeared, yet a white dress also appeared underneath. She also gained a small Kurby plush which leapt onto her shoulder and hugged her.
"That plush will be the source of your power. You can access what you want at any time." Abel nodded.
"Wow! It's so wonderful! Thank you!"
"Well, I guess you'll be going now?" I hugged Serene, "what an unexpected turn of events."
"Thank you, A. I'll see you again." She hugged me back.
"No offense, but considering your new profession it'll be too soon." I laughed. Abel chuckled. And then, like that, they were gone. Time started to flow normally, and within seconds the room was filled with people. Things seemed crowded, so I decided to take my leave. And as soon as I was out of the hospital I turned on my home and called the Doc.
"Hey man," I said when he picked up, "I'm gonna be home in a bit. Wanna play some Mash Bros.?"
Then I took a bite of my burger.
