Let’s start there. It’s not a fun party trick or something I turn on and off for convenience. It’s constant. Obnoxious. Loud.

Every single person in this school is a walking, talking, thinking headache.

Except you.

“Please welcome our new transfer student,” the teacher said.

You stepped into the classroom with that annoyingly neutral smile. Not too shy, not too confident. You bowed, said your name. Normal.

Everything about you screamed average.

Except when I tried to tune into your mind.

Nothing.

No thoughts. No noise. Just... static.

It wasn’t a fluke.

I tried again during lunch. You were laughing at something Kaidou said (probably his fiftieth Jet-Black Wings speech this week). Everyone else’s thoughts roared around me like usual. Yours?

Blank. Clean. Like a whiteboard someone kept erasing before I could write anything down.

You sat next to me without warning.

“Hey, you don’t mind, right?” you asked.

I said nothing. You took that as a yes. Great.

You unpacked your lunch like we were friends. I stared at my coffee jelly, hoping you’d get bored.

“That’s so cute,” you said, pointing at the jelly. “I didn’t think you’d be into sweet stuff.”

Cute?

Did you just call me cute?

You weren’t thinking it. You said it. That’s what threw me off. I always know when someone’s about to say something embarrassing. That’s how I avoid social interaction. It's my number one defense mechanism.

But you?

You sneak up on me with your words like verbal landmines.

I hate this.

Over the next few days, I tried everything.Clairvoyance? Useless. I could see the vending machine running out of my favorite jelly in three hours, but not what you were going to say in five seconds.

Telepathy? Nothing.

Time reversal? Yeah, I went back ten seconds once just to see if you had thoughts then. Nope.

I started avoiding you. You didn’t seem to notice—or maybe you did. Hard to tell when your brain is a locked vault and I forgot the combination.

Then today, after school, you walked right up to me while I was pretending to be deeply fascinated by an empty juice carton.

“You’ve been watching me,” you said.

I nearly dropped the carton.

“Is there something weird about me?” you asked, sounding almost... amused.

Yes. Everything.

But I didn’t say that. I said nothing.You stepped a little closer.

“Well, if it makes you feel better…” You leaned in just enough to make me flinch. “You’re pretty weird too, Saiki.”

I blinked.

My powers sparked like a broken lightbulb. My thoughts jumped. My heart—oh, for god’s sake.

You smiled again. “See you tomorrow.”

And just like that, you walked off.

No thoughts.

No warning.

Just chaos.

I think I might be in trouble.

I’m being haunted.

Not by a ghost — that would be preferable, honestly. Ghosts I can exorcise. But you? You’re a living, breathing anomaly, and worst of all…

You keep looking at me.

And it’s driving me insane.

The next day, you sat beside me again during lunch like it was your assigned seat. I could have used telekinesis to move the desk. I could’ve reversed time and bolted out of the classroom before you came in.

But I didn’t.

I let you sit there. Again.

“You’re quiet today,” you said.

I always am. But that doesn’t stop people like Teruhashi from narrating my "incredible mysteriousness" in their heads every 0.2 seconds.

But not you. Not a word. Not a flicker.

You just ate your lunch like a normal person. And I sat beside you, coffee jelly untouched, pretending this was fine.

“You have really nice eyelashes,” you said, like you were commenting on the weather.

I stared at you. You smiled like you didn’t just commit a psychic war crime.

No one says things like that unless they’re thinking about them first. You didn’t even look like you were planning it. You just said it.

My brain short-circuited.

You tilted your head. “What? I’m not wrong.”

Okay. No. I can’t do this anymore.

I stood up.

You blinked. “...Did I say something weird?”

Yes.

You keep doing that.

If I can’t read you, I’ll watch you. Observe. Study. Surely there’s some rational explanation. A dormant power? A psychic shield? Are you some kind of anti-Esper?

Whatever it is, I’ll find it. I’m smarter than this. I’m Saiki Kusuo.

So I followed you.

Not in a creepy way. (Okay, slightly creepy.) I just kept an eye on you after school. You walked through the shopping district, stopping to browse snacks, humming under your breath.

Still no thoughts. Still no psychic presence.

But then you did something unexpected.

You bought two coffee jellies.

I froze.

You turned your head slightly. I barely avoided being spotted by a pole.

Then you walked home. Still humming. Still unreadable.

I stared at it. You tapped the lid with your finger like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“You like these, right?”

You didn’t say you thought I’d like them.

You knew.

You always seem to know.

And I don’t know how.

I sat in silence, spoon hovering, heart strangely loud in my chest.

You were watching me again.

Not like Teruhashi. Not like someone obsessed with some imaginary version of me. You looked at me like I was… human.

Like I wasn’t some untouchable being or mysterious loner or freak.

Like I was just… Kusuo.

“You’re blushing,” you said with a smug smile.

I dropped my spoon.

Damn it.

Thinking about Suirei again…. She’s literally so iconic.

She took Medicine That Kills You For Ten Minutes and walked it off like a champ. She kidnapped Maomao and gave her a stack of medical textbooks to distract her, like a parent giving their toddler cocomelon. She’s so androgynous everyone thinks she’s a dude when she wears men’s clothes. She keeps wearing men’s clothes even after going into hiding. She’s deathly afraid of snakes because her shitty stepmother threw her into a pit of them for probably no reason. She has no friends. She is one of three people in the entire series who were able to outsmart Maomao. She makes one attempt at a joke and when it doesn’t work never tries again. Maomao is *very* interested in her intelligence and medical knowledge, which weirds her out. She got locked in a closet during one of her stepmother’s orgies. Her half-sister loved her so much she took her original birth name as a fake name while spying.

She tried to assassinate Jinshi. She’s so pretty, when she shows up disguised as a eunuch she ends up becoming legitimate competition to Jinshi’s beauty. She’s Jinshi’s cousin. Did I mention she’s hot as fuck.

I once saw a girl talk about how the most beautiful men are often treated like women in our society (sexualized, objectified by men and women).

This made me think of Jinshi from the apothecary diaries.

Some people consider it to be creepy how much he's into Maomao despite her disgust, but I see it differently.

I believe Maomao isn't actually disgusted with him but uncomfortable with how he makes her feel. She is attracted to him but she doesn't want to accept that for a while.

More than that, she sees through his facade. The face he puts on. She knows his nice persona isn't genuine at first and she's weirded out by it. It's like when you're talking to someone and you just know they're fake as hell. And that's precisely what he likes.

Until Maomao the only "romantic" experience Jinshi had is being sexually harassed by both men and women since at least the age of 14. He learned to use it, but there's no denying that it had a lasting negative impact on his mental health (he hates that he's beautiful).

Maomao doesn't do that. She provokes him until he acts his age in her presence and she likes his authentic self (the scene where he headbutts her after she asks for oax bezoar).

He loves that. He learned to make himself smaller, dimm his own light and act precisely how others expect him to. In conculsion he objectifies himself.

But not with Maomao, it doesn't work on her. The only thing that works on her is when he's being his authentic self around her.

She truly loves him for who he is and not the face he puts on... and I think that's something that's very relatable to a lot of women in the fandom.

Another Haikyuu round up post for various pages and panels I enjoyed.

Exploring Hinata's outlook after crashing the invitational has been great, I really enjoy this understated determination for Shimizu, and the grandeur of the nationals court is a lot of fun.

Not for Volleyball, though I've been to a handful of big sporting events like this, and the feeling of stepping into one while an important event is going on is captured well.

If im being honest I don't think Ka Zuigetsu is who Jinshi wants to be. He doesn't wanna be this masculine crown prince, commanding soldiers and telling them who to kill, or being jerked around by imperial games. He jumped into that identity cause everything he cared about was on the line. He's wanted to shed that identity his whole life, to get far away from it

But he doesn't wanna be Jinshi the sparkly eunuch either. Using his beauty to get by when beauty is such a source of resentment and bitterness in the inner courts. Where he doesnt get to make a difference or help who he wants.

He wants that secret third thing, to be free of all the social barriers that elevate him or lower him from everyone else, especially from Maomao. He's at his best when he sheds all of that, and can be vulnerable. When he and her just get to be people.

I believe going forward he's going to continue with the name Jinshi, and continue to find that secret third thing. After all, didn't Maomao say that he'll always be Master Jinshi to her? His preferred name?

(There may be a case for Jinshi as a trans allegory but I'll save that for another time)

Some villains are just villains.

Shenmei is one of those villains that I don’t think we need the “sympathetic backstory” for. Because while it can be interesting to know what could’ve contributed to someone becoming who they were or why they chose to act in a certain way, there are just some life courses you don’t get to justify. Like inflicting continual torture on the woman your husband felt forced to marry because of the emperor but never loved to the point of murder, then going on to be cruel to her daughter (Suirei), turning your own child into a doll for revenge and convincing other respectable women to abandon their children and debase themselves. It’s one thing to see the path that could lead down a certain road and a whole other thing to take that road while forcing others to walk it with you. Shenmei didn’t just choose destruction, she destroyed everyone else along with her and I don’t think any backstory should try to rationalize her choices.
