Step 0 of Awesome Character Making

Hello! Local girl thing here. While I work out the loose screws of a design, let me show you my first step in making a character! The planning. For this instance, I am using obsidian's canvas feature to put a bunch of images together into a mood boardish style, lets me think about what kind of mixtures I can make. I like to write down what parts of the designs listed I'd like to take from, including any colors!

when I drew this comic 3 years ago I had NO idea how far it would reach. I'm happy to finally share a corrected version with proper abbreviations, and even MORE state names of indigenous origin ♥️

however, the goal of this comic was to inspire people to do your OWN research on indigenous history. To question everything we have been taught, and everything that has been pointedly left out. This erasure, this “forgetting”, of history is not just of the past… it is happening now. - Across so-called Canada, the US, and US-occupied islands, native women are victims of murder at 10-12x the rate of non-native people, and are the most likely to go missing without being searched for by the law. - Native reservations have the highest rates of poverty in the US, with over HALF of tribal homes with no access to clean water (with more joining this list by the year) - Native people are 6-10x more likely to be unhoused than the rest of the population, and native teens suffer suicide rates higher than any other demographic. This list of modern day genocide goes on (thank you for compiling @theindigenousanarchist <3) and yet take a look at those environmental stats!

Native people manage to do SO much for the planet as a whole - thanklessly - and with all this stacked against them. Don't even get me started on kin fighting in south america. Could you imagine if there was help? #landback is resistance to genocide, and it is the key to saving our warming earth.

So look into it and the other hashtags, cuz a cartoon goose ain't a substitute for a proper education. Love to my grandparents who always kept a map of tribal territories of turtle island on their wall, to speaking on our Tsalagi & Saponi heritage. Hello, girl thing here. I first started drawing seriously by drawing rocks. Over time, buildings became something I just drew in passing for fun. They're just so silly to draw, ya know? Architecture is so cool.

Hello, girl thing here, welcome back to my digital atelier. Today I made a woman with tangerines in her hair alongside buns. I found a picture of this woman and felt inspired to draw her, and, besides the eyes being off, I think it's pretty cool!

Hello, local girl thing here. I have been gone for a while. August was simply a month where everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. Nevertheless, I am back to share art>:D

I am learning how I like to do things when I want to make art that isn't for the sake of capturing realism. Unsurprisingly this means that anime/manga is a huge inspiration for that. I remember someone saying to me that the general style of anime and manga captures the form in a way that traditional Chinese painting does: with minimalism. This interpretation is certainly interesting to think about.

Satori Mountain Lord

Hi, girlfailure here. I was asked to draw the lord of the mountain some time ago, and have recently had the time to draw again. I plan on showing the full drawing when it is done. For now, this is the first sketch, definitely seeing some things I'd like to change lol.

# Satyrs

So, I decided to draw Satyrs today, because I have a D&D character that I haven't designed yet, but written for like crazy. They're a Satyr Monk. This picture is actually a concept I had for this character, named Cassadros Aeroseeker.

And this was a sketch as to how the anatomy of a Satyr might look like. I was trying to understand exactly what I wanted the legs to do, cuz y'know, goat legs.

Hi, girlfailure here. I like pencils, I really like pencils. This is a quick sketch on a hippopotamus.

Art Books

Hi, girlfailure here. I bought some art books in order to gain more experience and knowledge with what I want to draw.

Art Fundamentals 2nd Edition is a book that has a focus on contemporary art and painting, and has the fundamental principles that can translate over to whatever you're doing in the illustration world.

Here's its table of contents as well as who worked on each chapter.

100 Lessons to Create Anime/Manga Characters is written by Alex Brennan-Dent, who goes by ABD Illustrates on YouTube. Their book goes through their process in creating character design. This book makes you do more thinking on your end to try and understand why design elements are added and what that may contribute to the story of the design itself. I know it says it has QR Codes, but my copy does not seem to have them.

Hi, girlfailure here. Here's a full page of sketches I did today. I've been experimenting with my new brush pen, it feels and acts kind of like a sumi brush, which I enjoy as I also dabble in that style of painting. I tried making an Afro with it but I think it needs some more symmetry. What do you like about afros, design wise?

Hi, girlfailure here. The topic "Farm Animals" naturally devolves into "Food" and then into my latest obsession, Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi. This is a drawing of one of the canaries.

Hi, girlfailure here. I've been sketching more recently and I've been pulling random ideas from generators. One of the topics this generator has is, "Farm Animals" , and so my rooster sketch was born! I wonder what farm animal would go good with a rooster...
