“Well it’s mostly just aesthetic,” Sky protested feebly, as he eyed the crumpled back of the Honda, license plate barely hanging on by what seemed to be sheer willpower at this point. “I backed into a wall,” he added, the shrug that illustrated the admission making it clear that he seemed to think this to be a common mistake made by many drivers on the road, and not a glaringly silly thing to have happened.
Her next statement though, as derogatory as it might have sounded, came across as maybe even a joke, something that could almost have come out between friends, and at that Sky seemed to relax, a slight amount of tension leaving his shoulders as if his body had finally realised the anxiety it had carried when he arrived was unnecessary. “Technically it took me five tries to pass,” he said truthfully, the slight upward curve of the corner of his lips showing he was less ashamed of this fact and more simply accepting of it. “My sister said they probably just took pity on me. Or, they never wanted to have to get in a car with me again, and that was the easiest way out. But unless you need a lift anywhere all you need to worry about is getting the license plate reattached, so….. And, I brought snacks and a present.”

Harper was easy to spot at work, being the only female mechanic kind of had that effect, but it was a title she wore with pride. The same couldn’t be said for every customer. She did her best to remember someone, but that usually only went as far as the car they drove. That couldn’t be said about Sky and the car that couldn’t catch a break. If it were visiting her, it wouldn’t have been a good day for the vehicle. Most of the staff had gone home for the day, but Harper would rather be anywhere than her trailer, which benefited her late work hours. She was up front, looking through a parts catalogue when he came in, and a knowing expression already sloughed into her face. “What did you do this time?” Harper had swung around on her stool to hop off and go around the counter to assess the damage. “Pull her into the garage and I’ll take a look,” she instructed, giving him the signal to go ahead and bring the car in. Her hands shoved into her coveralls, squinting out at the damage at hand before turning her curiosity back to the driver. “How did you ever get a license?” The comment was not meant in offense but more as amusement. Technically, she benefited from his faults in driving, still cutting him a deal because she got a kick out of it now.

“Really? But I think that’s perfect for you,” there was digging a hole, and then there was bulldozing up an Olympic swimming pool sized pit. Sky, right now, was becoming closer to that latter camp than to the former. “Water?” The expression that followed was almost a pout, a little petulant. “I don’t need a water,” he said sulkily. “I’m not a kid. Can I get an actual drink? Maybe I could get you a drink?” He asked with so little subtlety that he might as well have erected a neon light behind his head blaring the words I AM FLIRTING WITH YOU VERY POORLY. “Maybe tonight?”
Tumblr media
Paul couldn’t help but laugh at the interesting compliment. He’d already been thinking of cutting the kid off for a while but getting compared to well groomed landscaping finally pushed him to actually do it. “A pretty hedge?” Paul repeated with a smile as he wiped out a glass with a rag. “I certainly can say that’s the first time I’ve heard that one,” he went on. Paul was no stranger to getting hit on, and this wasn’t even the first time it’s happened while he was bartending. People had a tendency to be more emboldened after a couple of drinks and Paul was a captive audience behind the bar and he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t flirted for a better tip to marginal success. “You want a water?” Paul offered. He wouldn’t serve him more booze but water could be poured freely.

"You wanna come over?" It wasn't like he had anyone else really to invite around on a Wednesday night - his social life was looking rather depressing at the time being. But this wasn't just out of having no other options. Vivian seemed like she got it, even if it was more of a vibe than some deep emotional conversation they had had. And besides, who else could Sky get high with without the worry of being judged or having to have some sort of uncomfortable conversation about whether he had a problem?
"We could watch a movie," he offered, evidently skirting around what he was really proposing for the night. "Have a drink. I don't know. Hang out." As if their hang outs would ever be so tame as to purely involve alcohol and a movie. He meant getting high, clearly. He was just avoiding having to outright say the words.
Tumblr media
It was surprisingly quiet in Rewind Rentals. Vivian didn't actually like it when it was quiet, and she was left to her own thoughts. It was better when there were customers and she could talk to them about the movies they were renting. Vivian liked talking about movies, it was the one thing that made her feel sane these days. What else did she have to talk about?
When Sky came in, it was a welcomed visit. She know knew him from the few times they met. Sure, they barely knew each other and they were likely to talk about drugs and alcohol over movies - but that conversation felt less depressing with him. Like she wasn't alone in having this messed up head. Like she wasn't dragging anyone else down because he was already as low as she was.
"Not really." She said, when he asked if she had plans. Most nights she either got drunk and/or high in a bar somewhere. Or she got drunk and/or high in her own bed while watching some movie.

”Yeeeeees?” The tone of the woman’s voice was questioning, and Sky was confused by this. Why would he ask if he didn’t mean it? What possible reason might he have for continuing to frequent the pharmacy on a near weekly basis? If anything, it was becoming a little inconvenient, although the obvious solution of being more careful in the first place and not misplacing his things so as not to need to visit again was just about still out of the realm of things that were possible for Sky Page’s brain.
And then, he clocked it, with his face immediately making it clear that he had only just - and with more than a bit of shock - come to realise exactly why Candace might have felt alarmed at the idea of someone continuously misplacing prescription items. “Oh my god, wait. You think I’m selling it? Or like, I have a problem?” The thought would arguably have been less laughable if he weren’t always hungover and generally a mess when he showed up, but Sky’s expression held a good amount of affronted offence regardless. “Christ. It’s literally an epipen. I don’t think it’s even possible to like, use an adrenaline pen recreationally. Or at least, I’ve never tried,” he said pensively. Maybe he should try, come to think of it. Life was short, after all. “And I’m not selling it. I just keep losing it. Really. Like, I’m pretty sure this week I left it at a bar, or maybe on the bus, or maybe I threw it out by accident…….”

CLOSED STARTER: @skyskypage. LOCATION: Plinth Family Drugs.
Candace rarely spoke to the people she filled prescriptions for, but this Sky Page was coming in every week needing to refill his prescription because he lost it. That obviously made Candace suspicious, and she couldn't in good conscious be feeding a potential drug habit. He could die. He would experience eternal nothingness. Or worse. And it would her fault.
"You lost your prescription again?" She asked the man, leaning on the counter.

Rewind was quiet today, Sky noted. He wasn’t a huge customer - truth be told he wasn’t a huge film fan and could count on one hand the number of movies he had watched in the last few months - but he knew it was where he could find Vivian, and for that reason he had made his way to the store, half expecting to find her swamped and unable to find the time to have a conversation with him. As it turned out, no one in Cardinal seemed to be in the mood to rent a tape. Go figure. It wasn’t that they were close. Sky had actually only met Vivian a few times before, and their connection was tenuously built to begin with. He’d been piss drunk close to the start of his time in Cardinal, and stumbled across an equally piss drunk Vivian who as it turns out was not just piss drunk but high. Suffice it to say he’d not met anyone else in Cardinal who shared those habits with him. And as much as he might not intend on finding healthier habits, he had become lonely. As it turned out, company in conjunction with the substances of choice made for a good cocktail of forgetting one’s past, which was of course precisely the point. Which led to his current state, in Rewind leaning against the counter until she turned to face him. “Hey, Viv. You got any plans tonight?”

There was always an odd stage, he thought, between meeting someone and becoming friendly enough to where certain acts of interaction were permissible and not deemed weird. He had met Nell before - she had come into Tunes a few times, always picking up something nonchalantly that nevertheless had the effect of sorely impressing Sky even in his capacity of self described music snob. They had exchanged names, mostly just out of politeness considering that Sky’s name tag made his introduction semi redundant. And yet they still weren’t exactly friendly, hadn’t talked enough to claim that connection, which was precisely why he worried that perhaps what he was about to do might cross the line between friendliness and being strange. Still, it was worth the thought behind it, and so as the doorbell rang to indicate a customer’s entry and Sky glanced up and saw Nell, he dipped briefly below the counter before emerging holding a record, hopeful smile evident on his face. “Hey I, uh, kind of held something back for you. It’s the new Siouxsie and the Banshees,” he said quickly, almost stumbling over his words nervously, chewing on the inside of his cheek before he continued. “Only came out a couple weeks ago. I just thought- well, based on what you were picking up last time…… I mean, you don’t have to take it….”

Sky had only worked a couple shifts at Tunes so far, and yet he had a growing feeling that perhaps his coworker was running out of patience with him. And to be fair, this was a completely reasonable attitude to have considering that for the third shift in a row, Sky was visibly struggling with the consequences of one too many beers the night before, avoiding the light as best he could and, when asked to complete a task, doing it at the speed of a sloth and a snail’s love child - or not finishing it at all. Right now, for instance, he was idly sorting out the Rolling Stones vinyl section into chronological album order - or rather, flipping the records back and forth to make it look like he was working rather than wishing he were in bed. “Do you have any Tylenol?” The question was aimed slightly pathetically at Lucien, even though Sky sensed perhaps he was on thin ice, running too close to making himself officially the most annoying colleague possible. “Or- anything, I don’t know….”

If the look on his face was more than a little sheepish, then even then, he would be playing it far cooler than he felt. Truth be told, Sky did not want to be dealing with a mechanic right now.
Not because she was in any way incompetent, nor mean. Nothing like that at all, actually. The simple truth was that Sky was fairly easily intimidated by just about anyone, and when just about anyone happened to be a heavily tattooed, pierced woman wielding a wrench - well, it didn't exactly dissuade his feelings of nervousness, to say the least. He'd met Harper a few times now, a side effect of his inability to drive from point A to B without incident, and yet his anxiety remained - maybe partially due to a sense that he was about to be ridiculed justifiably for the reasoning behind his third trip to Romano's this month alone. "Hey, uh, I might have fucked up a bit this time...."

So maybe Sky was one, two, even three drinks past what would have been a sensible limit for him. It wasn't exactly stopping him from giving the bartender looks of avid adoration. If anything, his dreamy smile and slowly batting eyelashes were only increasing in intensity with each sip, as he leaned on his elbows, head tilting to one side in what his addled mind likely thought of as being in a coquettish and attractive way, but in reality was giving more silly drunk fool. "Has anyone ever told you you're so pretty? Like," he pondered for a moment, evidently struggling to find good similes, "the prettiest painting ever. Or- the prettiest tree ever. Or- um. A really pretty hedge."

Walking through the picturesque streets of Cardinal Hill, you find Skyler ‘Sky’ Page, the 21 year old clerk at Tunes originally from Chicago, IL. Living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're empathetic and thin skinned, but what you might not know is that they are a human, and that they’re hiding something… ― Cooper van Grootel, bisexual, male, and he/him.
full name: james skyler page - he has the same first name as his father, so has always been called sky and won't ever answer to his government official birth certificate first name.
d.o.b: january 9, 1970 // current age 21
zodiac: capricorn sun, pisces rising, pisces moon
hometown: hinsdale, dupage county, il (he claims chicago, which is a bit of a stretch)
current residence: cardinal hill, wa
species: himbo human
sexuality: bisexual
~ personality
overview:
positive traits: compassionate, creative, romantic, patient
negative traits: pessimistic, cynical, self absorbed, overly sensitive
mbti: infp
religious beliefs: agnostic. he was raised catholic and to an extent identifies with the faith but also finds himself questioning it regularly.
description:
sky really feels his feelings. that’s it, that’s the description.
okay but to elaborate: sky is someone who’s constantly emotional about something. he’s extremely sensitive, he can be hurt or upset by the tiniest little thing, and then he needs to find a creative avenue to let out those feelings because since he’s afraid of conflict he’ll never tell people that they bothered him and is more likely to internalise it and turn that feeling into months long resentment. not that he doesn’t get bitchy at times (he does), but he’ll drop snide little hints if you’ve upset him instead of telling you so you can not do it again. he can also be very self absorbed, focussing on his own upset without noticing the struggles of those around him, to the point where he could be described as selfish. this isn’t helped by the fact that he’s very pessimistic and cynical, which can come across as him being grumpy and finding fault in everything in the world, never content. however, sky at heart is truly a hopeless romantic. he falls in love extremely quickly (and deeply) and will absolutely devote himself to the people he really cares about whether it’s platonic or romantic love. it takes a lot for him to stop liking you, he’s very patient and he’ll let everyone in his life walk all over him forever. until they realise he’s written a song about them. LOL.
bio (tws for death, drug use, alcohol, religion)
james skyler page was born on january 9, 1970, to devoutly catholic and highly affluent parents - both of his parents are successful lawyers with generational wealth. he is the youngest of four, with three older sisters, one deceased.
growing up, it was expected of sky that he fit the mould, be the perfect little catholic schoolboy, attend prep school, and go on to study an accepted college major - just as his sisters had done before him. with eight years between him and his youngest sister, by the time he became old enough to do anything, they had done it first and perfectly. unfortunately, sky never really wanted to be “right” by his parents standards. he spent most of his teenage years bunking off school, drunk stoned or high, playing guitar and otherwise being mildly delinquent. his parents despaired of him and made that very clear, and the only person in his family he really ever connected with was his sister imogen. when she died and sky was 19, he began to find it unbearable - and by the time he hit 20, he had to get the fuck out.
