In the BFB finale, Four apologizes for being mean to the contestants, and I’ve talked about his character development there before, but I wanna talk about BFB 16 because. I think it’s also important to his character.

Specifically when he tells X to leave. At first he asks, “You’re going to switch to Two’s show to, aren’t you?!” Sounding hurt and sad.

But X never gets the chance to answer. Four just insists that he should go as well.

I think this is showing his internal conflict. X is his best friend. He wants X to stay, but he pushes him away. Why?

He thinks X would be happier with Two. He is practically CRYING right now, he finally got a chance to host a show and now 40 of his contestants are leaving. X is not particularly conflict prone. If Four forced X to stay with him, they probably wouldn’t fight back. But he lets them go. He’s already losing so much and he LETS them go. Because even though he’s a jerk, he wants his friend to be happy.

Of course, on the outside it just seems like he’s pushing them away. None of these thoughts or feelings actually get communicated. Four just believes X will be happier elsewhere and tells him to leave.

His internal conflict doesn’t end here, because he’s miserable without X. He wants them to come back. He literally makes it a competition to see who can steal X back, because even though he’s SAID it was okay for them to leave, that’s not how he feels.

And then of course, in the finale he realizes what a jerk he’s been and stuff, all that.

But I think that moment with X is importantly to his character. Even back then, he’s got this idea of himself in his head. That’s he’s mean. He’s a jerk, a murderer, a bad person. But instead of apologizing, he pushes X away. He tries to isolate himself, only to end up regretting it. It takes until the finale for him to finally be vulnerable and actually apologize. And even in the finale, the only reason he apologized is because he tried isolating himself and it didn’t work.
