Outdated technology aesthetic
On the left side, we have my attempt at recreating what watching TV without cable and pre-DTV looked like, plus some effects of what dying VCRs/worn out VHS tapes would do.
On the right we have "Ode to scrambled PPV viewing".
Why?
In early '99 when I was 7 years old, we had cable for a little while. My parents being in totally responsible, law abiding citizens, ran a wire down to my room. So I had this illegal cable hook up for a brief time before the bill just didn't get paid and it was bye-bye premium TV.
The "advantage" to having the illegal hook up was I could watch the PPV channels through this horribly distorted picture. So when WWF had a PPV I'd be sitting with my Mom, squinting at my tiny TV trying to make out faces and figure out who was winning. It's a weirdly fond memory from my train wreck of a childhood.
Anyway I noticed this fucked up filter on my app that reminded me so much of the old scramble PPV picture that I layered different filters, attempting to recreate what that might look like if such technology was still prevalent today. It's been a long summer.
