AUTISM SPEAKS IS SHUTTING DOWN IN CANADA!

When I started as an autism advocate in 2010, A$ dominated the narrative. They were everywhere and they regularly shouted advocates down and buried our voices. To see that they've made the decision to no longer operate in Canada is HUGE. It means our voices are getting louder and louder, and that our movement has made tangible progress!

My guess is that it's no longer financially feasible for them to have a Canadian arm of the organization, and that's such a massive shift given how dominant they were when I got my diagnosis 15 years ago and officially joined the autism advocacy movement 14 years ago. I'm so proud to see these changes happening - we've made progress, and I can't wait to make even more with all of you!

For now, though, it's okay to celebrate this victory. We all earned it together!

Finally someone says it (The only thing is that I kind of miss how fandoms used to be but nah)

When you say a fandom is dead, it’s a bit of a blow to people who are still producing and enjoying work for that fandom. You’re basically saying what they’re doing doesn’t matter, doesn’t count, which might discourage them from continuing to participate.

If one person is creating content, the fandom isn’t dead.

If one person is consuming content, the fandom isn’t dead.

If two friends are chatting on skype about their OTPs, that’s fandom.

If someone doodles drawings of their favorite characters on a napkin, that’s fandom.

Just because someone is producing content for one fandom doesn’t mean they have to leave another.

Not every fandom can be the big, new, shiny and popular thing.

Not every fandom *should* be the big, new, shiny, and popular thing.

It’s okay to have small, tight-knit fandoms. They can be just as fulfilling and entertaining as the big ones.

You know you've fucked up when you go to a doctor and the thing you have wrong with you has been named after an occupation that isn't a thing anymore. Like imagine a doctor looking at you and going "yeah you've got ox-drawn ploughman's disease. We don't even test for that anymore. Yeah the reason you've never heard of it is because the last known case was in 1927 and happened to some guy who was like 98 years old and didn't believe in modern medicine of the time. I never thinked about it, good analysis!

I was thinking about this line from Jackie and it got me thinking.

3 years earlier, when Lighter and Fuel lost their house in a fire, they stayed over at the Yado Inn. Two villagers were homeless, but they weren't left to fend for themselves. The other villagers helped them, because they were a community.

Now, 3 years later, Lighter and Fuel are at risk of homelessness again because they oppose Porky's regime and refuse to buy a Happy Box. Their house has a huge hole in the roof. But if they were to ask Jackie if they could book a room at his hotel, he'd probably tell them the same thing he told Lucas. Not necessarily because he has anything against them personally, but because their presence there is bad for business, and now that capitalism has been introduced to Tazmily, he needs money. The villagers don't help each other without expecting anything in return anymore. I think this is a subtler way that the game shows how capitalism promotes a hyper-individualistic mentality.
