Bought Ethel Cain tickets! (Very exciting) Now have to plan a trip to London (exciting but also stressful)
(I am a Northerner and a uni student, I do not venture that far south and I do not have the Money that London costs)

"I feel very proud to be a black Creole vampire, in the show. I mean, I hope that all it does is opens the gates for more. Let's tell more stories. Let's be monsters! And enjoy it! Yeah, let's be problematic. Give us the space to be a problem." - Jacob Anderson

got gaybaited hard by that one scene really near the start of the book
Except now I realise it wasn't bait. It was a lost oppurtunity taken partially by western imperialism and colonialism. It was something perfect that was never meant to be and could never be. This is angsty in the worst way.

I've almost finished Babel by R.F Kuang and I have Thoughts.
I was warned that the message is spelled out a bit too much that you don't get to make connections on your own and there were definitely moments where I felt that but it wasn't enough to ruin the book for me. Also some people do seem really determined to miss the point sometimes so I guess I can't blame her too much for just saying it so explicitly. It would have been nice to have some ambiguity though (not in the overall message of anti-colonialism but perhaps in the details around it.)
I do agree that the friendship between the group could have been shown more. There were a few points where we were told how close they were and how much they loved each other and I was thinking Please just give us a few scenes of them just hanging out and having fun or talking to each other about personal unrelated to the plot things so we can see it! However I also have mostly been reading very character focused books recently and haven't read anything so plot heavy for a while so maybe part of that is just me yearning for the character focussed, minimal plot stories I'm used to.
In regards to Ramy and Robin's relationship, I went into the book expecting no queerness at all so I was surprised and excited when Ramy was introduced and things seemed a bit gay. As I got further through the book and kept seeing the little hints and realised that it wasn't going to develop into anything more I was mildly disappointed but thinking about it, it makes sense and I think it was a good decision. Firstly it was already a long book with a lot going on, adding a queer, interfaith romance in a historical setting absolutely would have either taken away from the main point about colonialism and violence or made the book way too long. Also it worked as a statement about the experiences that were taken from the characters by colonialism. This is what I mean about ambiguity in the details! I really enjoyed thinking about why those parts about Ramy/Robin were there, trying to figure out the implications and how they contribute to the main message of the book. Perhaps I will make a more detailed post about that later idk.
(spoiler warning here if you intend to read the book and haven't yet)
Letty was awful the whole time and I wasn't surprised by the betrayal, I was more surprised when I reached her interlude that she made the decision to betray them impulsively rather than planning to do it for longer. I assumed that from the moment she found out about Hermes, she was waiting for an opportunity to report them, or at least considering it, but no, it was supposedly only after hearing Griffin's plans. Which makes sense as a statement about privileged people who love supporting causes that don't impact them when it's just Instagram posts and fun slogans but immediately think it's "gone too far" when it becomes more direct or has the potential to inconvenience them. I just didn't see that for Letty though because she never seemed open to even the most performative kind of anti-colonialism. Maybe if there had been more scenes showing the closeness of their friendship where Letty was acting a bit more sympathetic, it would have worked. I also have more detailed thoughts about Letty and Victoire's friendship, but again I may make a separate post about that. I fear I will have lots to say about this book as it remains in the back of my mind.
Overall it is a very good book, even though there were things that weren't perfect, I have enjoyed reading it and it has given me plenty to think about when I'm painfully bored at work tomorrow :)

love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it
#discovering that i can decide that i hated a library book and it wasnt worth reading and not feel bad#because i didnt waste any money or bookshelf space on it#and if i find something i love then i can buy my own copy another time!
