If I had a nickel for every story that featured an outcast teenage protagonist with an emotionally absent father who's part of an isolated community which is frequently terrorized by winged creatures and said teen builds an innovative weapon to take said creatures down, manages to do just that, but fails to kill the one they hit, instead realizing they might not have the full picture of the causes behind their on-going conflict, and the two bond, go on adventures together and eventually lead their respective factions to seeing eye-to-eye for the first time in history and to living together in harmony instead of fighting, I'd have two nickels.

Which is not a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.
