Do you have any advice for running a design blog that features so many characters? Your designs are all so expressive and distinct from each other.

i think the main thing it all boils down to is "get a little silly with it", in particular mess around with different shapes bc thats the big thing that makes characters look different at a glance. im not even talking shape language (warriors has too many cats that dont speak more than a couple words for each character to have unique shape language), but using different features to make each character stand out

facial features in specific have a lot of range, nose types, eye shapes, eye brows, ear shapes, you can do so much! and just mixing and matching traits can give you so many outcomes and that helps with distinct character design.

take a look at animal crossing characters, all characters of the same species have the same model, but each character has a very unique face. and the devs arent scared to give characters traits that a lot of people consider """"""ugly""""" and i think character designers should feel similarly! (obviously some people want their characters to be what they consider attractive, which is fine! as the character designer you have full control of what you do. but if you want your characters to be distinct i think you have to be willing to deviate from your personal definition of attractiveness for the sake of having unique faces) have fun!! dont worry what others will perceive the design as, do whatever you want to do

same goes for body types! every body part can be customized to fit whatever you want the character to be, fur/hair length, torso length, body type, etc etc. go nuts!!!

genuine question, if nightstar is so old why is he still mostly black?

Because he’s not actually that old!! ^^

Nightpelt trained Brokenstar at a relatively young age; it was a whole plot point in Yellowfang’s Secret if I’m remembering correctly that, because Raggedstar himself couldn’t train his son, he gave him to Nightpelt as he was a younger warrior and thus would be more easily swayed by Raggedstar’s suggestions.

The reason he looks so ragged is just because man’s been through a lot… He’s chronically ill, had the kid he helped raise turn evil, rose to try and heal a broken Clan, got rejected by the ancestors he worshipped, and still had to put on a front so that he could be a beacon of security and hope.

I just put the “old man” joke in there cause I personally think it’s funny lol. As a fellow chronically ill dude who only just turned twenty and is already going gray, I like those jokes probably an unreasonable amount.

Some design notes!

Even when standing, he sports a hunch.

His vitiligo is roughly inspired by Sally of “the_vitiligo_kitty” on Instagram!

Eyes are more dull in hue.

Purple-blue overtones.

Overall just very visibly ragged and run-down.

Scarring includes: Heavily ripped ears, nose bridge scar, several tears in fur (face, neck, shoulder), and a patchy-furred tail.

Spottedleaf my ABSOLUTE beloved, they did you so so dirty, don’t worry bb I’ll fix that ^^

I see her more as Firepaw’s “cool (autistic) aunt” type than what was presented in canon…

I’m not…. Super satisfied with how she turned out. I’ll probably try again someday, but it’s good for now ^^

Slim build underneath a scruffy coat.

Slightly shorter tail than average.

Lots of heart spots and patches because I’m biased and I love Spottedleaf. TONS of white spotting, however, to honor her prefix.

Green eyes rather than amber because I want her and her littermates to each have a different eye color.

Small in size, but in no way delicate; slender but sturdy.

Messy fur.

Dark pants! With a little bit of a rough “skirt” marking on her butt just for fun.

Scarring includes: None! Though I imagine she has a few from her short time training as a warrior that she hides with herb decorations or just smooths her fur over.

WOOOH, new Firestar!

I adjusted his colors a little and redid his markings, and, of course, redrew him to be a bit more obviously small and round.

Redesigned my Firestar (x2), and I’m SO glad that I did, cause look!! He’s so pretty! Lovely lad!

Some design notes!

A cat of prophecy, so he bears a star mark! His is now on his belly and ears: for feeling, and for hearing.

Big ears, big tail, big floof… Small everywhere else — especially in stature.

Star socks on forepaws only, and heart shape on his chest!

Lots of fire motifs (obviously) on his face, torso, and tail.

Tons of swoops and semi-curls in his pelt. Nothing too drastic; he’s (very) thick-furred, not curly-furred.

Curled ears.

Scarring includes: Nicked ears, fox trap scar around his throat, across the right cheek, and a scar across his flank.
